So far, so good for me with the retinol-based serum, Jane.

I wonder why one nail polish works for one person and not for another?

I had a really bad experience when I tried a retinol based serum a year or so ago. I ended up with lizard looking skin, very dry and flakey. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this? I used an Elizabeth Arden serum. May be I will try this one by Lillyann.Good to read everyone's views.

Another Deborah Lippmann fail. Lasted about a day on me, even with the her base & top coats. I returned it all to Nordies.
OPI at about 1/3 the price works better. Though I gave away my nail polish collection to a friend. Decided occasional professional manicure is more effective for me, occasional for me is maybe 3-4 times a year

My doctor will not fill a prescription that a previous doctor wrote without a thorough examine and good reason. I get the impression she thinks Americas are taking to many prescription medications based on the pharmaceutical companies and not good medicine. I guess what I am trying to say is that she is a great medical doctor, but opposed to nonessential prescriptions (if that makes sense). And she defines what is essential?

Coincidentally I am going to see her on Tuesday morning, I will bring up this issue and see what she has to say. If she declines to write a prescription, I'll ask her why (I rarely question doctors so that might an be an issue I have to overcome).

Colette -- I will try the alcohol trick!! I have been thrilled with the Deborah Lippmann products. They just get me!!

Sterling, it depends on the doctor. If you've never been prescribed anything, she'll probably send you to a dermatologist for an assessment, and it's your right to ask for a referral. If you say, "I used to take Retin-A, and would like a refill on the prescription," then most likely they will write the prescription for you. What are her reasons for being ultra-conservative on this issue?

Sterling, I do start with a really clean nail bed. I use a nail brush and soap, dry and then a swipe of alcohol to make sure there is no residue. The alcohol swipe is a pro tip I learned years ago that made a huge difference in my at home manicures. Some people use a nail polish remover swipe but the alcohol is way better. And I always use a base coat with nail polish color or my nails get stained and I hate that!

Hi Colette. I am sorry that Deborah Lippmann's nail polish did not stay on your nails. I'm sure you always start your manicure with a really clean nail bed? I always wash my nails with Dawn dish washing soap and let them dry thoroughly before starting my manicure. I never use a base coat because I am so lazy (that might explain why I had difficulty removing the nail polish).

I will try her cuticle remover and tool!!! I don't think I noticed them while I was shopping for polish. They must have been there. I must not have paid any attention.

BrieN. I think Amazon has Better Body Butter in a different composition (not peppermint, but lavender). I bought both. I haven't opened the lavender yet.

Thanks GradFashionista. You are completely right. A prescription for retinol would probably be the best place to start. Do you have to see a dermatologist for that type of prescription or could your general practitioner write it one? I gotta say my doctor rarely writes prescriptions for me. She is ultra conservative about this issue.

Thanks for the reviews. I love DL's polish colors but I could not get them to stay on my nails for more than a day. And I really tried. I tried several different base coats, two of which are hers, and finally passed them along. They work great for my Mom, go figure. I do love her polish remover, cuticle remover and her cuticle pusher tool. (It all came in a fabulous set.) Essie polish works best for me. But, I don't usually put color on my nails anymore, I just use a pink tint or clear coat.

I'm going to put the shea butter on my list be because I have terribly dry skin and I'm always looking for the next best lotion. This winter I started using First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Creme and I'm really enjoying it.

I appreciate the reviews, especially the body butter one (although it looks like it's currently sold out on amazon-I guess that means it's got to be great!!).

I used retinol for several months with good results before adding Retin A more recently. Even a mild form of Retin A is hard on my skin -- I only use it a couple of times a week and stick with the retinol other nights. I think the "best" choice is the one that you'll keep using.

The best retinoid, by a long shot, is one obtained with a prescription, if your insurance covers it. The stuff sold in stores is pretty weak in comparison and it might be worth saving your money in this department. If you do get prescription strength cream, it will probably cause a flare up or flaky skin, but this can be mitigated by using moisturizers or using it several times a week, rather than daily.

The polish looks in 1 looks amazing. I love deep cool red and purple polish.

I don't do a lot of product reviews because whenever Laura posts her monthly reviews, I go blank and can't think of a thing I have tried. But I did try several new products in December/January and I wanted to share them here. I'll copy these comments to Laura's monthly post when she posts it for January.

I have been looking for a good Retinol product for my skin. I tried a couple and found them too harsh for my skin. The reviews on Amazon recommended this Retinol Cream product by LilyAna Naturals. I bought it and started using it this week. This is not a long time, but I am really, really happy with this product. I love the feel of my skin when wearing a retinol product. It seems to tighten my pores and dry up excess oil. So far I can use this product daily with none of the negative side affects. If this cream is wearable, it is my goal to use it every day. Right now, I wear it straight, no additional moisturizer (which is a bonus).

The second product is whipped butter moisturizer. OMG. This product is nirvana. It goes on so smoothly and so easily. None of the products I tried over the Holidays even came close. The peppermint seems to give me a really fresh feeling. But the results are why I am here to recommend it. My skin has never been in better condition (especially my hands).

Finally, Deborah Lippmann nail polish. This polish also goes on smoothly and easily. I am hard on my hands and if my nails are on the shorter side, the manicure can last nearly six days. The polish highly pigmented which I personally love. I admit that that the polish is so pigmented that it takes time to get the polish off with cheap nail polish remover. Lots of cotton. Lots of mess. I had to buy Sephora's nail polish remover. I am willing to do that.
