I also got some price adjustments. I was able to call and get the online items adjusted over the phone. Then I went to the store for the rest. I also took my items, many still had the tags on them, which made the price adjustments really easy for the SA to do. I have some NAS items that are not on sale, but I purchased a lot this year during the sale, so the price adjustments were really helpful. Of course, I only ended up spending that money anyway using girl math and picked up this Amber Sun colorblock sweater since I need more layering tops and these Sam Edelman Jayden oxfords as a transitional shoe for my new dark bottoms. Now I have to figure out what is leaving my closet to make room for them.

It does look great so it really depends on how much you like it in person. I just ordered a dress as well while looking at price adjustments for my NAS items (it's a wrap dress that I hope will be OK as workwear). :) I find that I return most of the dresses I try on (they are just tricky to fit) so I am OK with ordering dresses just in case one of them works out.

As far as price adjustment, I have always been able to get it when there is at least one of the same item available, in any size. So you should definitely try the Live Chat to ask for an adjustment.

Thank you all. Such wisdom!

Elly, you are so smart and what you say really resonates. If I worked in an office and had professional functions to attend this dress would be a complete no-brainer. Since I don't, it's a bit more "iffy" -- but on the other hand, worth trying on for fit, at least. I think if it fits brilliantly and the navy is good, I will keep. If not, I will pass.

I too prefer the first dress without the cut outs. It's gorgeous and is a classic so as you say will be in your wardrobe for a long time. Much more flattering than black. I think it will be really useful but you need to see if you love it when you try it on. I have been looking at a black one on the Hobbs website with long sleeves and wrap front with a v neck. It is lovely but I wish it were navy instead!

Suz, I really think it is going to depend.

I see that dress as a stand-alone dress. Yes, you could wear a jacket over it, but I think it is meant to wear alone. The beauty of it is a ready made minamalist outfit for any "dress" occasion in 3 seasons. It also eliminates the problem of being cold and trying to find dress toppers for events and could go both to a dressy date-dinner or to a conservative or professional function.

I live in a climate somewhat similar to yours, and I agree, I don't wear dresses much in the winter. For winter funerals I much prefer a pair of wool slacks. People rarely have winter weddings here except for in a ballroom which are often overheated. If I worked in an office or had regular professional events to go to I would probably purchase a dress like that. So many of my professional events are creative smart casual or are indoor/outdoor/cold. In my case a nice black sweater to wear with my black pencil and a skirt would get more mileage.

I do think you will wear the KK dresses. I think they will end up being a light, stretchy, all one piece base to layer over. So long as they work well with tights. I think they are going to allow layering without the bulk of waist bands and tucking that skirts get into.

That said, I do have dresses that I've purchased with no event in mind that have gotten worn to death and saved my butt in numerous situations. I have a cap sleeve polyester jersey dress with a faux wrap with ruching that I bought cheaply on a whim and I've worn it to presentations, graduations, and when I went as someone's date to a wedding fairly last-minute.

It looks like a great dress and I prefer the non-cold shouldered version. If you only have one dress and it's a color you have been looking for, it is certainly justified. I can't wait to see it on!

It's not super dressy like the one you got for your award ceremony. I hear you say "winter" but perhaps you mean everything but summer? Because I would think you could pair it with nude or light footwear and accessories and it can be spring, or some other colors and it's fall, and so on. And you create great skirt and dress ouftits that can be more dressed down--maybe with booties and a vest, do you think? So I'm assuming it's not just a "funeral" dress but that with fun accessories, if it's comfortable, you will wear it for occasions in which I might always default to pants.
So I would base everything on fit. If it's a 10 (or 11 -12), then you're able to compare it with a lot of "almosts" that didn't make the cut, and decide if it's one of those things that you need to get when you find it because you can't just order one up when you need it. If there's anything meh about it, or it has fussy bits or anything, then don't settle since it's not an emergency. Will you be able to have all 3 dresses at the same time so you can compare rather than make the decisions in sequence?

Well I just love both dresses! The cold shoulder dress is gorgeous, but if you're like me and run cold, I'd be wearing a sweater with it which would defeat the purpose of the cut-outs. I see the cold shoulder dress as more of a sping/cool summer evening dress. That said, if returns aren't a problem, I would order it, try it on, and take it from there - see if you like the fit/fabric.

I once bought a beautiful dress for "occasions I know I'll need it for." Well, the occasions never happened, the dress no longer fits, and it's still hanging in the closet (for when I lose 5 pounds and those "occasions" come about). Granted, this was a very dressy dress, and could really only be worn for semi-formal/formal events like weddings, benefit dinners, etc. I would say if you absolutely know you have events to wear the Tory to, it could be a keeper. Fit and fabric will be key here too.

I would try for a price adjustment on the DVF, but I don't think it's going to happen. I tried that once (not at Nordstrom) and was told since it wasn't available in my size, they couldn't adjust the price.

Good luck, and I can't wait to see the dresses once you get them!

Thanks, everyone. It does look like a classic, doesn't it. That was my thinking. I would have it for quite a while and it wouldn't date.

Joy, it might prove difficult to wear to most of my writers' events. I don't have that many right now actually, anyway, because I am between books. This year I am not involved in our local Writers' Festival except as an audience member. (I volunteered in a small role but was not on the committee this year due to time crunch). I do have a workshop presentation to give in November, and I may have others throughout the year, plus a few informal readings. These tend to require more casual outfits, more "smart casual" -- if that makes sense. Often I will wear denim, booties, and an interesting topper of some kind. It's rare that I have a gala occasion as I did when I had to buy the Nicole Miller sheath. And that dress could be called on for other similar engagements, although I worried that in cooler weather it would be too bare.

Julie makes a good point that the shade of navy will be important, although on me, just about any navy works, blue being pretty much magic to me across the board. In the end, I think Mona is right -- the fit and feel will be the determiners. It is true I might not wear it a whole lot, but at this price point if it fits and feels great it would be a good thing to have on hand just in case. And "insurance" dress for the dressy winter capsule.

Of course you'll have to see the quality for yourself once it arrives, but that is a dress that is basic (in a good way--versatile and easy to style) and yet the ruching detail is so interesting and stylish.

I know how you feel about dresses being the odd duck within your current lifestyle, but I'm feeling the same way about skirts--I rarely wear them. But you know what? I want to start wearing them more often. Who's to say we can't, even if our days are not currently built for dressiness? These are things that we can adapt to wearing within our normal lives. It's not like we're mucking out the stables or gardening in them.

This is a very classic dress - I think it's wise to have such an item on hand, because when you need it, you won't be scrambling and spending money on an item that you are settling for. I think you are still in the wardrobe building phase, and although maybe you feel that the recent purchases are begetting more purchases, you have a very clear plan, and are executing it.

I think the dress is very classic and will provide a wonderful blank canvas for more formal occasions, however, assuming the dress fits I think the make or break points will be the feel of the fabric and the shade of navy, in my experience some navys are very luxe whilst others are more flat like a school uniform.

Suz, I have probably 6-8 winter ready dresses, but still I don't wear dresses all that often. The variety is important to me. This one is something I really would have had a hard time letting go. It's perfect for so many occasions, and you've already mentioned several in your lifestyle. I'm sure you will keep this for many seasons, and wear it quite a lot. It's a perfect dress.

Becky, I did consider that (i.e. move out something overstocked). I actually plan to send back one of two pencil skirts that I ordered from NAS. So in a sense a dress would sub for the skirt. I tend to wear them for similar types of function.

Pil, the Tory is gorgeous and I adore it. And it has similar lady-like styling (though not identical -- the navy David Meister is more of a true sheath, whereas the Tory is more of a blouson dress with a fitted portion at the waist/ hip area). But you've hit on the main difference. The Tory is fuchsia or berry with navy and while I would most certainly wear it out to dinner, to a wedding, to give a presentation, or to any number of events, I definitely wouldn't want to wear it to a funeral.

But, uh, that sort of begs another question -- do I not have anything else I could wear to a funeral? (Um, guilty as charged...I could easily wrestle up a funeral outfit in a jiffy from what's in my closet.)

And do I need a dedicated funeral dress?? (I certainly HOPE not! But I must admit...several family members are unwell and it has been seriously on my mind....perhaps that played into things when I hit "buy.")

But truly, this looks more like a celebration dress than a sad dress, doesn't it? A sedate and ladylike celebration, but celebration just the same. Hmmm.

Hmm, that is tough. Trying to come up with some girl math that makes sense here...

Is there an overstocked category that could give up a hanger to the burgeoning winter dress capsule?

At least let us see you in it when you make it to Nordies. Then sell it to me if you don't like it! (Except nursing in that dress would be an impossible feat. Sigh.)

It is a beautiful dress, but could the Tory Burch be worn for the same occasions? Or is it not muted enough? Or the Kamalikulture turtleneck as well - or is it too casual? I'm not a big cold shoulder fan, so prefer the original dress.

Thanks, Becky. The thing is (and another reason I felt tempted) there really isn't anything to push out! I own precisely ONE winter dress (the new Tory Burch). Or two, if you count the Kamalikulture on its way to me (I hope). So it is not as if I have a closet full. Still...I don't wear dresses regularly in winter and that really has to be taken into account, you know? If I own two "dressier" ones (this and the Tory) each one might get 3 to 6 wears between October and May. Then again, both are so classic in style that they would be in my closet for at least 3 to 5 years, I expect.

Well, if this is just sales goggles, then I'm right there, blinded by the light. This looks fabulous, Suz, and I can imagine it being worth pushing something else out of your wardrobe.

So, I was about to call for price adjustments on some of my NAS stuff that has gone on deeper sale, but I realized that since I actually wanted to exchange sizes on several items anyway, it made more sense for me simply to reorder at the new price and then return the unwanted items when I cross the border.

A few items I'm keeping have also changed in price. The Amber Sun sweater (only a few $ so possibly not worth the effort of a call). But also the DVF sweater -- and the price differential there is quite substantial. Except it is only available in one size and that size is not mine. Does that mean I do not qualify for an adjustment? (I would consider that reasonable, by the way-- but since I have never done this I thought I had better check.)

Meanwhile, I got to browsing and hit "buy" on this dress. I am sorry I can't provide the Nordstrom's link but it appears I got the last one and it's gone from the system. It was 55% off, so a substantial deal.

Guilt pangs. Do I need another dress? I just bought a Tory Burch fall/winter dress, and ...ooops ...I also ordered a Kamalikulture turtleneck dress! Plus a sleeveless dress. And in the fall and especially dead of winter, I do not wear dresses very often!

Mind you, the Kamilikultures were only $50 each so hardly guilt worthy expenditures. I will wear the turtleneck as a casual dress, I'm sure -- it looks like something that I just won't stress about, so I can see it getting used even in my work-at-home capsule. And the sleeveless KK is mostly intended for the summer, when my dresses and skirts really come into their own.

So...especially given our recent discussions about how much is enough, what tipped me over the edge besides sales goggles? Well, I have been searching for a little navy dress for fall/ winter. And this looked like the perfect one. Simple, streamlined, a good neckline for me, subtle detail. Could be worn out to dinner, to a funeral, to many functions, to a winter wedding, etc. Not the kind of thing I would wear every day, but sort of a winter-ready combination between my two other navy dresses. A less sporty, more dressy version of my sleeveless cotton Ralph Lauren navy sweater dress, and a less sexy winter version of my Nicole Miller navy sheath.

Unless it's just too conservative. There is a cold shoulder version, too, but I worried that would date more quickly. Should I try that instead? (I can easily return when I go to pick up at the border.)

Would love your thoughts. Of course I realize that unless it looks great, it's all moot -- and luckily, I can send it right back where it came from if I don't like the fit. But supposing the fit is good, does it make sense or is it just a stupid purchase that will become an orphan?

ETA: GIRL MATH RULES!! I just called Nordie's for my price adjustments and with those plus the return of one pencil skirt I more than paid for the dress anyway.

The Tinkit sweater went down in price by $60!!

Heh! So if the dress works, it's almost like getting it for free. And if it doesn't, I will just have more to spend, guilt free. :-)
