Sihaya, I have not noticed runway models to look sulky up close. Just without emotion. I think it's a good look for the job.

It does make sense in the context of the runway, but it always drives me nuts in print ads, partly because your eye is almost always drawn to the face in a picture. I especially dislike it ads for wedding dresses. You're supposed to be happy when you're wearing one of those, darn it! (I used to work at a bridal salon years ago and it seemed like all of our catalogs were full of sullen brides, wth?!)

I know it is more professional that way, but I want to see the models proud to wear the clothes! Their cold expressions make me want to look the other way.

I don't find them sullen, just very cold, which as everyone has mentioned, is appropriate. I don't care if the models look nice or not because I want to see the clothes. They should basically be walking mannequins. I would find any sort of smile rather jarring and distracting.

I think the makeup, even when not meant to be theatrical, has to be on the heavy side, otherwise it wouldn't carry over the distance between the runway and the audience.

I was guessing it was something alone these lines. But still wonder if they could not smile and keep their faces neutral vs. looking so sullen and almost angry. Angie, maybe they look just right and neutral when you're looking at them up close.

Nice question!

100%, Khris and Taylor. After just seeing a whole slew of runway models on catwalk shows at NYFW it's even more obvious to me that runway models are 6 ft tall (6ft 6 with heels) walking clothes hangers. As a viewer, you want to absolutely focus on the clothes and not the model. Smiling totally distracts from the designs. It's too personal and personable. In my opinion unemotional and almost unfriendly looks in this context are the right decision. As for the make-up, the catwalk is all about theatrical drama. Heavy make -up really works!

However on the red carpet, like at the Oscars tomorrow, a smile becomes much more of an accessory as you've described because the audience is judging the person and not just the outfit.

I always wondered too and that reasoning makes sense - and to think I always used to joke that it was because they were starving and needed a good feed LOL

Yep, they are basically a hanger for the clothes...impersonal, and not connecting emotionally to the audience:)

I think it's to keep you form really looking at the model's face much. Your focus should be on the garments and the look as a whole.

Like Angie's post on this topic, I believe that a smile is a great accessory and can increase anybody's style quotient. So I've always wondered by runway models in particular tend to have such pouty looks. Sometimes even their makeup is dark. And they look sour, unhappy, sulky. Since the non smiley look is so universal on the runway, I'm curious if about the rationale behind it. Anybody?
