That's fascinating, Anne! I was also happy to read awhile back that fat cells can indeed disappear completely (not just shrink) if you maintain your weight loss long enough.

But even before my babies, I had trouble with jeans being too tight in the waist. Back then of course jeans AT the waist were the style. But also I think that naturally my waist is simply meant to be thicker than the average, and clothing is cut for the average - meaning it fits very few people, unfortunately.

Becky - at least you can have the waistband taken in easily, and it's an inexpensive tailoring job. For those of us with the opposite issue, it's a major tailoring job: we'd have to buy clothing that fits in the waist - then have it taken in in the butt, hips, thighs.... all over... essentially recreating the garment.

In my experience, it's not worth the tailoring effort (for jeans, at least - might be for dress slacks). For jeans, it is worth it to simply be persistent and keep shopping around. There are jeans out there for our body type. You just have to keep trying on until you find them. And when you do... duplicate!!

Ellen, I had to laugh when I read your comment "It's so frustrating when so many styles COULD be wearable, but they insist on cutting them so tight in the waist. Grrr." Being an hourglass I find myself frustrated when so many styles COULD be wearable, but they insist on cutting them so *loose* in the waist, or *tight* in the hip. I guess that just proves they don't make jeans for the vast majority of us.

Well done with the weight loss this week Ellen. I cut sugar out for a bit from time to time (haven't ever lasted more than a week) as I love it so much and usually lose a bit too. Plus it kind of reorientes me so that even when I reintroduce it I don't consume as much. I am having a bit of a blitz too, but more on the excercise front - have started training for a 10k.
San I don't think most hourglass people would agree with you! I don't know who they design them for really - maybe rectangles

I think you're right San and thanks for the input Anne! It's so frustrating when so many styles COULD be wearable, but they insist on cutting them so tight in the waist. Grrr.

I cut out sugar this past week and lost 2 pounds, so I think I'll keep doing that and see how things go!

I think you have addressed an issue for all women. We are not all hourglass figures but the clothing designers seem to design clothes for the hourglass. It makes me want to scream! They are coming a long way lately with different fit in jeans. 20 yrs ago all jeans had a tiny waist and big hips. (At least in my experience)

Hi Ellen,
I also have a mummy tummy. My baby (no 3) is nearly 8 months and I have about 5 pounds to lose. Even though I am a pear I have that problem of things fitting everywhere except around the waist
A book I have found informative and helpful is called Outsmarting the Female Fact cell - after pregnancy (see link http://www.amazon.com/Outsmart.....0786884568)
It is very sensible and non sensational (if a little cutsy at times) and has great advice - not that I follow it completely, I confess.
Anyway, it goes into quite a lot of detail on the issue of postpartum weight loss, and I found a relevant section on the tummy (p156)
To summarise; when you start to lose weight (ie fat cells shrink) they will go from the thighs, butt hips arms back and cheedks - the last place will be from the stomach, as the abdominal fat cells were the most important during pregnancy and are therefore the most stubborn postpartum.

But if you keep losing weight they will come off (mostly) eventually

Good to know, thanks so much! I love wearing jeans, but am not always great at buying them, so this really helps.

And I still have hope for my tummy, but at 7 months I feel like it's been there forever, you know?

Yep! Sure does get different after babies! My "babies" are now high schoolers... not to alarm you.... I just got the bad-luck gene card so no matter how low my body fat gets, or how much ab muscles I have.... I still have the loose stretched out skin they call the "mother's apron." Only plastic surgery would solve this.... and that's out of the question for me. Just would never go under the knife!!!

Your baby is still young so don't fret: you will probably not have this issue. It's not common. Just some of us have lousy skin that stretches too easily!!!

If you try the Citizens and they feel a tad too snug in the waist, no worries because after a wear they will loosen up and be more comfy. Trick then is to wash but line-dry - NO dryer - so the waistband remains ideally loose.

Not sure which thread to post to but I read both and saw your pic....

I am only 5'0" but I know what you mean about gaining weight around the belly. I can't wear low-rise because 1) saggy belly hangs over the top - yuck and/or 2) they slide right off my hips.

I look for jeans that hit right at the thickest part of my middle, to "lock and load" it all in. For me, this is just *slightly* below the belly button - 8 to 9 inch rise. (But remember, I'm 10 inches shorter than you, so YMMV on ideal rise length).

Anyway, my best brands are:

1) Citizens Hutton (kinda like a trouser-ish version without trouser pockets; slim-fitting in the thighs and then has a flare from knee down.)
2) Citizens Amber (bootcut)
3) Citizens Elson (straight leg - though Angie says they almost look like skinnies on me)
4) Earnest Sewn (ultra skinnies)

Hope that helps!!

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted much before, but I've been reading this all for months and I'm impressed with your opinions! So I need some tips.

I'm a 5'10 appley-inverted triangle, average weight. My problem right now is overcoming baby belly (my baby's 7 months). I always have trouble with jeans being too loose in the hips and too tight in the waist, giving me major muffin top, so I generally wear low-rise. Doesn't hold everything in, but gives a smoother line.

Anyway... I'm headed to NYC early this fall (I'm from Canada) and would like to try out some premium jeans while I'm there. A lot of the stores here don't have them and I can't order a lot online because of shipping to Canada.

So - does anyone have brands/cuts to recommend? By that time I hope to have lost the remaining 5-10lbs and I'd be willing to invest in an amazing pair of jeans if they really were amazing. I wear jeans almost every day and prefer dark washes so I can blend them with blazers, etc, if I need to kick it up a notch.

Thanks!
