Just a thought - I have noticed on tops like that, when the highest point of the hemline hits in exactly the right place and the sides drape down, it creates a circular shape side to side. At a glance it can fool the eye into thinking it sees three dimensional roundness. Does that make sense? In this case, against a black background where it is nearly impossible to see detail, perhaps the person glanced at you, witnessed this optical illusion and spoke without thinking.
