Suz, when I finished writing it I realised I could be happy with a much smaller wardrobe if it just contained a few variations of the items on the list! Food for thought there.

Caro, I love your style and I can see you rocking a tuxedo.

Greyscale, ohhhh that blouse is beautiful! Look at the colours! I think I might have to start saving up. Thnx so much for the link!

The perfect ink blue pants suit; tuxedo style that I could wear day or night. I have tried on so many over the last couple of years but nothing so far.
A navy leather jacket.
I have other things on my list, like knitwear, but I feel more flexible about them - I don't have a specific colour or style in mind - I need to love them, have them fit well & work with my other clothes.

You know your own style so well. That is an amazingly detailed list, and I can see you in each and every item. Together they would form the backbone of your wardrobe, in fact. No wonder you long for them.

I would like some very similar items. And of course, I love your choice of neutrals! :)

For my own needs and wants, I would take your first two dresses and make them sheath style with a higher neckline. Pockets not required.

I would add a pair of light taupe knee high boots, not suede, that fit.

A modern wool trouser suit in navy, ink, or possibly charcoal. It must fit perfectly (or be made to fit perfectly).

It's so interesting reading about everyone's dream items! Diane, you're so marvelous at picking colours that suit you, I can already see you in your described items. :)

Alexandra, thanks for the links! I really think I'm going to give sewing a second chance next year: good thing I didn't get rid of my sewing machine during my simplifying phase. I have narrow heels too so I understand the shoe frustration. And good luck sourcing your fabric!

Jayne, those all sound great! I was just reading a book about wool, and it turns out bleaching wool white is quite damaging (just like bleach is on our hair), so maybe that's why it's difficult to find white cashmere?

Shedev, I'm so impressed you only have one!

my wish list for ppp:
1. perfect and unique grey blazer, light grey, interesting details. to wear with jeans. ditto for red.
2. perfect fitting riding boots. a slender ankle, a slight point to the toe, comfy fit at the calf over jeans. stuart weitzman 50/50 might be it but have to get to the states to try them
3. fluffy, non itchy, white sweater. to wear over blouses and without. cashmere is ideal but seldom white.
4. a dress. just one that is my perfect fit. probably a line, vneck, blousy on top, fitted at waist. in any of my colors (winter) but not black or white.

E, that is quite the list! I agree with Diane G that you could make some (most) of the items on it. Fitting is a very important aspect of sewing - trying out a pattern in inexpensive muslin prevents future frustration.

LBD (and anyone else interested in doing their own alterations), this is a great book with step-by-step instructions and good illustrations: http://sewtrue.com/Store/Alter.....-P800.html

My dream items are a lime green single-breasted belted coat (I will make it as soon as I can source the perfect fabric) and comfortable pumps with a 3" heel that won't fall off my narrow heels.

Ok, I've had a think and so far...

The perfect tone of purple to suit my colouring in a trench coat, or fabric to make one.

The perfect fitting white jeans in a substantial weight denim.

A pair of red shoes. The colour has to be a sort of geranium red, not an in-your-face bright red. Preferably with a stacked 2-2/12" heel. and as I have difficulty keeping pump styles on I guess it would have to have a strap, so maybe ankle strap.

A brick red winter coat with a snuggly collar, knee length and in a good wool fabric.

Peacechick, that sounds like a wonderful outerwear capsule! Good luck finding them all!

Thistle, I spend far too much time thinking about all of my interests. lol The specific details are because I have some clothes that are almost perfect, but little things about them bother me. Knee high boots seem difficult for everyone!

LBD, I love your colours! I will happily share wish lists. Alexandra & Diane G are both very inspirational as far as sewing goes, although it makes me nervous to try again and spend lots of hours sewing something just to have not fit. Zippers terrify me for some reason! But I'll just have to get over that. I do minor alterations via handsewing here and there, but I wouldn't want a tailor or sewist to look at them. lol I'm better at mending at least!

I really love your wishlist! I didn't have much of a wishlist, really, until I looked at yours. Now I want your wishlist! #4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 in cream, soft grey, copper and pale ocean blue. And while I dream of things not being 'dry clean only', that seems to be a harder box to tick.

Now that I've seen Alexandra's posts on this forum, and looked at her blog, I really really see that it is possible to sew and knit very modern, classic pieces. That is something I aspire to in the next few years. I think if I learn to just do hems, replace zippers, and make minor alterations in 2014, I will be off to a good start.

I'm impressed by how thoroughly you've thought through this list and I think the details will really help you with sieving for the perfect pieces.

Here's my PPP... And I've only figured out the outerwear:

Navy knee-length swing coat with gold buttons (replacing my pilling Old Navy maternity coat that I love), perfect for pregnancy or lumpy days
Black zip up pea coat in a ponte knit (replacing my current workhorse)
Black knee-length quilted puffer with belt, fur hood and preferably gold zip (I'm starting to like the slim look although I already have a Canada Goose style red parka)
Camel shawl lapel wool coat with tie belt (replacing my camel wool trench because it is much more suited to my hourglass shape)
Rainproof hooded trench coat in a neutral color, maybe dark grey (replacing oatmeal London Fog trench that I got in a swap)
Black leather moto jacket (still experimenting with length and collar style)
Perfect denim jacket (current one is too long)
Perfect Chanel jacket in a non-traditional material (funky over corporate)
Perfect navy blazer for nautical ensemble with little or no shoulder padding and small lapels

Diane, I wish I could sew! I tried once 5 years ago, and I put together a whole complicated lined dress bodice, only to try it on and find it didn't fit despite my body measurements matching the envelope's sizing exactly. It left me so frustrated and disenheartened that when I also started developed neck problems (so couldn't sit too long at the sewing machine, head down to see the fabric) I just gave up. But now I see that was a bit silly, and as I've become pickier about my clothes, I'm very tempted to try it again. I think I might devote my thrifting budget next year to fabric instead, but this time I'm going to start small and work my way up to more complicated stuff. :)

Joy, thnx for the tip! I see some beautiful EF things on ebay but I think I'm sized out of her line. You would look beautiful in a red skirt suit: I hope it turns up eventually! And small calf boot searching is so difficult.

I'm also after the knee length items like coats.
Last night a friend and I went to a holiday decorating class. She wore a beautiful medium bluish green cardigan and top that was Eileen Fisher, probably last years. You might check EBay. It was not saturated and EF usually uses organic natural fabrics and fair labor practices. Keep an eye on her things for your linen dress too.
My PPP list that has run on for years is the perfect red skirt suit in a year round fabric like rayon or light wool, knee high black boots with no more than a 2" heel that fit narrow (12") calves, and similar boots in medium to light grey.

Ooh, I may have to come back to this and have a think. I loved reading your list. Did I read in one of your posts that you sew or want to learn to sew? I bet you could get some great fabrics to get what you're after. The first dress you describe would be quite a straightforward shape and you could get some fab wool fabric. I will have a think about my own PPP items and pop back later.

But I always have hope that maybe the next thrift store visit will be the one!

Here's my little wish list:

1) a grey or taupe fit & flare sleeveless dress, whose bodice fits me perfectly but not skintight, with a round neckline somewhere between a crew and scoop, in-seam pockets, knee length skirt and lined in silk or acetate (*not* polyster) in a tropical or suiting wool

2) the same dress, in a medium muted blue, in a summer fabric: probably either a linen/cotton or cotton/silk blend

3) a summer dress in linen or a linen blend that is long sleeved, high necked, and knee length for sun protection, boxy for maximum coolness, but somehow magically flattering despite all of that, with pintucking or other subtle sewing details, in a medium muted blue or teal

4) velvet slim fit trousers in any muted, cool colour or neutral, high rise with a side zip and no pockets

5) tropical wool stretch skinny trousers, with a high rise regular trouser front and pockets, in a mid neutral grey, that don't bag out

6) a fit and flare heavy wool winter coat in a grey and blue or taupe/mushroom tweed with a rounded collar and belt that comes to just below my knees

7) a long sleeve silk button down blouse with a small round collar, slightly lower than usual top button, and princess seams but no pockets in any of my favourite neutrals (grey, navy blue, taupe) or pseudoneutrals (blush, blue-grey) with curved hem that's just long enough to peek out from the bottom of a jumper/pullover but not tunic length

8) a Liberty of London print blouse

9) any kind of top or dress in a cool, dark, but not saturated green that seems to only exist in my imagination

10) a muted, cool, medium violet cardigan, crewneck but the top button below my collar bone, long sleeves (roomy enough to wear over a long sleeved blouse but fitted at wrists and a little too long so I can pull the sleeves over my hands), stops at my natural waist with ribbing tight enough to be fitted, and some kind of textural detail in either wool or silk/silk-cotton blend (or one of each!); this one I'm hoping to knit

11) the same cardigan in a cool, medium fawn/taupe

12) shoes that are comfortable enough to sightsee all day in, casual enough for everyday outfits but dressy enough for all but the most formal events, work with or without hosiery, in a medium neutral shade, go with everything in my wardrobe, and are the highest quality so will last for years and can be resoled as necessary

It goes almost without saying that all of these items are manufactured in the most ethical situations possible, using the most environmentally friendly methods, by workers who love their jobs so much they never want to leave. And perhaps delivered by unicorn straight to my front door. ;)

What are your dream items? (And let me know if you have any leads on mine! Even if they're retail, at least I can file the info away for the future.)
