It does vary, and I think some of it depends on the nature of the weight loss. I've lost weight recently, but more significantly, I've been running so have developed muscle mass where before there was just flab. I don't think I've lost more than 12 or so lbs, but I'm finding that in some cases I'm going down two sizes rather than one. My husband is telling me I look "tiny" (in the interest of full disclosure, he's almost a foot taller than me at 6'6", so take that for what it's worth), even though I have lost less weight than I did before our wedding 8 years ago.

I weigh 14 lb less than I did just over a year ago and am wearing the same sized clothes. Larger ones are too loose, smaller too tight!

I lost about 30 pounds some time ago, and only went down two sizes. I'm 5.4''. People tell me I look so thin now, but personally I don't notice the difference so much. From size 10 to size 6. I look like a 4 though. I went from being almost overweight to being almost underweight, but I lose weight evenly through my body, so it's not so obvious. I had already lost about 10 pounds when people started noticing I was losing weight, and it wasn't really obvious until I had gone down about 15.

For me it isn't equal. When I lost weight it took between 10 and 12 pounds to change sizes at first. The more I lost, the faster the sizes changed. Now 2 or 3 pounds either way will change my size in some things. I'm talking about fitted garments...nothing with an elastic waist.

At 5'2 short waisted, with secondary pear tendencies, 5 lbs weight gain/loss moves me to another pant size. My shirt size does not really vary unless greater than 5lb change.

I think it's about proportion- what % of your body weight is 10 pounds? Gaining 10 pounds for me is to increase my body weight by 10% and would be more like 2 sizes.

It varies so much by the person.

About 20 pounds can make a difference in size for me, though it all depends on *where* the bulk is added or subtracted from my body - but even if my size hasn't changed, the way certain clothes fit can be quite different with slight weight gain/loss. Generally I lose/gain pretty evenly.

It's about the shape. I have a girlfriend who tells me: I loose 5 pounds, there goes by breasts, I gain 5 pounds, all on my derierre. I personally put them on my thighs ( doesn't bother me, legs ditto and belly where I HATE IT)

10 pounds COULD be two sizes - it's not necessarily the weight itself, it's the location of the weight on your body.

Over a year ago, I lost 12 pounds worth of menopot/muffintop and now comfortably wear size 4 jeans instead of stuffing myself into a 6. So that's almost two sizes.
I'm 5'8", so height does matter.

And clothing sizes vary so wildly, I don't even care about the number itself!

Yep, for me a mere five pounds puts me up one size, but I'm only 5'1" and I'm short-waisted. I bet if I were a foot taller, five pounds wouldn't make a bit of difference to my size.

You also have to consider how each individual gains or loses weight. For example, if you gain and lose all your weight all in your bottom, then your pants size will probably change with 5 lbs but your top size will obviously not change. However, if you gain weight evenly, then 5 lbs probably won't make much of a difference.

I agree with Chewy-- I"ve heard 10 pounds per size, but it's of course relative to how close you are to ideal weight. I think 5 pounds on me pushes me up to the next size.

Of course it's going to be different for everyone- and the smaller you are, the more each pound counts. That being said, I think that generally I have heard 10 pounds per size.

Something that I've looked for but am having a challenge finding is generally, how many pounds are there per size. For example, if one lost 10 pounds, would one go down one size in clothing? Anyone know or have an idea?
