Yarra, I love the belts! They come in so many great colors. I never thought of belting the vest that's a great idea. I recently played around with the waterfall effect and liked that because that allowed my shirt to be the color against my skin instead of the vest. I also like the idea of painting the fabric. That could be a great way to add some color. Now I have some thinking to do!

Chiara, Thanks for sharing your Pintrerest board. It's very helpful. I can see how the looks you are picking would work well for me also. There are a few that I really love and think I may start looking around for some similar items for my wardrobe.

Hi staysfit, not so much commenting on your clothing picks, but I am also a Kibbe Dramatic type with a lot of Ethereal, as I'm a light spring in the sci-art system. For me, this means I generally don't do pattern except in small doses eg a scarf or handbag. I really look my best in quite sculptural shell tops, where the interest comes from cut or from structural detailing eg one of my fave tops has darts but sewn outside, so they are visible; another is like a halter neck made out of origami! These paired with elongated bottoms (straight, long trousers or skirts), and streamlined blazers, elongated cardigans (see below for an idea). I have to be very careful with drape, can't do horizontal drape at all, it makes me look gaunt v quickly. I also usually look good in clothes with angular neckline/armhole detail, so straight topped camis, not curved necklines. Anyway, I have accumulated lots of ideas about light season D on my pinterest board, so that might be of interest to you http://pinterest.com/chichiara.....pretation/

Hi Staysfit,
Great to hear from you! I am happy to hear that you are playing with your Stella pieces as separates. I like the Command Attention Vest belted. Do you ever do that? It creates a really funky bohemian look that is great for night too.

I've been in love with Ada wrap belts http://adacollection.com/collections/wrap-belts.

Personally, I don't have a ton of experience with dying clothing. I know a couple of people who hand paint their Stella items too. They typically just paint little side pockets on jackets or just the corner of a collar. It is such an artistic look.

The Command Attention Vest can also look great open as a waterfall. Adrienne of The Rich Life on A Budget, wears it open (in black) in her blog post White Sandals for Spring. Maybe this post will give you some ideas for how to mix the vest with other styles for spring.

With the weather warming up, hopefully soon, I'm looking forward to switching up footwear too. The Gizeh Birks would look cute with the New Wave Skirt too.

Thanks Yarra, I truly love my Stella Carakasi pieces. I have tried separating the pieces to mix and match in my wardrobe. I am finding more to go with the skirt than the vest I purchased. I am struggling with the color which washes me out, especially the vest because the collar is high . I have toyed around with dying the vest to see what happens. I'm not usually that much of a risk taker, and I have no idea if it would work. Thanks for the article! I am looking forward to warm enough weather to wear my Birkenstocks!

Hi Staysfit,
My name is Yarra, and I am the lead stylist at Stella Carakasi. I am so intrigued by your discussion on Spring purchases. Thank you so much for introducing more people to Stella Carakasi.
I love the items you selected from Stella, the item from Vince Cumato, and the DVF Ballerina Cardigan. Working at Stella I have a my favorite Stella pieces that I mix with other carefully selected items, I may have to borrow some ideas from this forum.
I have been curious about Birkenstocks myself and recently found this great article:

http://www.newyorker.com/magaz.....becca-mead
I think the Gizeh is very stylish and I see women wearing them everywhere around the bay area. I saw a woman in Oakland last Sunday with a very minimalist black and white outfit and patent leather Gizehs. It was such an understated, and yet striking look.

Tanya, I plan to experiment with mine. I have no idea how to make it modern. I recently wore one with a stripe tunic top and skinny jeans. It garnered compliments at work. I don't have a pic handy. I will check to see if I took one. They fit over most anything. I like them with my high waisted jeans. I bet they would look good with a midi skirt. The DVF website shows them with white pleated shorts. I'm hoping the pink one will look good with my new white Maddie pants.

Great selections, I am swooning over the colors you have chosen, so springy. All the outfits you posted are like a breath of fresh air. I have never heard of Stella Carakasi, before, and really liking those pieces. And that shirt
dress is gorgeous.
I am a big fan of ballerina sweaters too, though I have not worn them forever. I may ahve kept one or two and seem to be relevant again this spring with waist defintion coming back. I wonder how they should be worn in a modern way.

Rachy, I somehow knew you would be a person who knew about Stella! I saw the wide legs on the Stella website and thought about them. I have been thinking coulottes would be interesting, but worry they will be cut too short and wide for my frame. I saw some online at Nordstrom's but it's hard to tell what they might look like lengthwise. I need a longer pair that is not too flared. I may check our local mall to see if they have any.

Firecracker - So interesting that you don't see classic and modern at opposite ends of the spectrum. I need to think on this. Perhaps I'm confusing modern with edge? And I see your point about classic including timeless...and then you see trend (very now) as being on the opposite end. Thank you.

Staysfit, I do see both the Vince Camuto top (or the Lafayette shirt dress) and the Stella Carakasi pieces as being very much your style. Actually I think the Stella Carakasi pieces are created with the bit of drama and drape of the scarves that you like to accessorize your classic looks with, so perhaps both looks do go together. But you can also alternate between the two looks and still be in character. Or maybe when you wear the most classic looks (like the shirtdress), you will tend to add your unique jewelry for that bit of avant garde, dramatic, or arty interest.

Also, I don't see classic and modern as being opposites. To me, the other end of the spectrum from classic would be trendy. And I don't think they are mutually exclusive at all. Many of us work in the latest trends with whatever style we already like to wear, and it can freshen up our looks.

I'm struggling with congruent myself. I can't decide if I'm being obsessive or if there is real exploration happening. I guess I know I want modern because I prefer pieces that have a little edge, I little something a little different, seem ultra urban. And because I love black ...I guess that always feels a bit modern in my eyes. Again, I'm really still processing a few different styles that don't really feel congruent to me. I might post about this at some point.

Your sheath dresses and these turtlenecks feel very in keeping with your "classic" descriptor. And your colors have a very clear and fresh feeling. So I think you're doing very well in executing your style. I think I was just surprised with your Stella Carakasi pieces. They just felt different. But again, I love this look. I'm not much help...

AM, Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I'm not sure where I discovered the Stella Carakasi, but I haven't seen anyone on the YLF forum wearing it before. I truly love the Carakasi look, even more than EF, although they are very similar. (I haven't looked at Metalicus.) I could see adding many pieces to my wardrobe over time. It would be hard to create an entire wardrobe from this type of clothing however, because the colors are so bland and neutral. It's hard to find pretty colors in this type of clothing. That may have to be my retirement avocation - learning how to sew my own!

Refining my style is certainly a challenging but fun process. It's trial and error to figure out what is going to work. I agree that Ethereal and architectural seem incongruous. When I look at Pinterest boards, Ethereal looks are very busy and remind me of Boho style. I have learned that small details have big impact on my small tall frame, so I prefer a minimal/simple look. I agree that in my case, the ethereal elements are referring to the colors and in some cases the fabric choices.

I have wondered if "Sculptural" would be a better word than "Architectural". It's hard to figure out how to juxtapose my love for a straight sheath dress with my love for something like the Carakasi. They seem so different, but I still see them as both being very much in keeping with my personality and style. Is that possible? I see a sheath as being sleek, simple, straight, but also achitectural/sculptural and the drape of Carakasi is reminiscent of the way draped cloth looks when it is carved into stone. The Carakasi holds a shape, and anything that is geometric in silhouette would be architectural or sculputural.

(I have added a picture of a sheath dress that I own below, and as you can see, it is in an ethereal color, plus it has some simple but interesting detail)

Your point about where I fall on the classic/modern continuum is well taken. I have always had a leaning towards classic pieces. I included both the words Classic and Fresh in my style adjectives and I'm not sure where I fit between them. I wonder how tightening up my placement on the continuum would alter my overall style. Right now I own an eclectic mix of both modern and classic pieces. For example, I love turtleneck sweaters. I have some that are cut loose and with a tunic length hem, some that have a slightly body con fit, and some that you might consider to be a very simple classic style. (I included pics of some (not all) of my turtleneck collection, so you can see how eclectic it is) Looking at the variety, I can see that having greater unification might be of benefit and would help me hone my collection. It's large as you can see, especially because there are some that aren't pictured. I'm not even sure how I would figure this one out? How did you opt to head towards modern vs. classic?

Angie, Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to check out the blazers. I really like the colors and hope that they fit! Also, I just ordered some J Crew Maddie pants in white. They finally had some in tall sizes again! Hooray!

Firecracker, I love your eclectic and creative eye. Either I'm unfocused with these choices and am hoping I can create cohesion to my style just because these are all items that I like! :-) Or this is truly a transition from my tendency towards picking classic pieces to something else. I can see where the Carakasi is very different from the Vince Camuto. You are not imagining it. I used the term architectural to describe one characteristic of what I think I am moving towards, but maybe that is a bad term. I am not sure what to call it. I think the Vince Camuto top you are referring to has more Ethereal qualities, which is the other term I put out as something I am also moving towards. AM rightly says that mixing Architectural and Ethereal together is difficult unless you use color, or maybe fabric. Perhaps you see something else I haven't considered unifying these items that I am missing?

AM, there were some great posts about drape by Angie and maybe Suz? within the past 8 months. I will try to find the links for you when I get a chance.

I like your picks, Staysfit! I think they'll work beautifully for you. I agree with you about the Lafayette tunic--I imagine you'd be swallowed by it. But I love, love that shirtdress you got! It will be Gorgeous on you. I'd like to see it with the Birks, for a little classic-polished/ super-casual juxtaposition. To me, that would be a very current look (not to mention easy to wear)!
The ballet cardigan is lovely. Thanks for sharing it. I hadn't really thought about that style.
I think the sheer paneled top will work well for you. I don't know if I see it as architectural, though I'm not entirely sure I get the "look" signified by that term. It doesn't seem in the realm of the Carakasi pieces, for instance (which I do love for you, by the way--they look entirely up your alley). But the panels add interest, and the sheer fabric lightens the look. It's more of a modern classic silhouette, with your light, airy element incorporated.

I'm chiming back in...been thinking about etherial. Deborah wears a lot of drape (Metalicus that reminds me of EF). And the drape can give an ethereal quality. But I guess I see etherial classic as very different from etherial modern. And from the jackets that Angie posted, this looks more etherial classic. You've got me thinking as I'm knee deep in assessing the role of drape for myself.

A great set of items to refresh Spring. Loving the colours and the florals for your style. Fab with white jeans and white footwear.

J.Crew blazers run quite short. Try Vince Camuto. Inge is 5ft 10 and has great luck with them.

Stella Carakasi looks wonderful. That's a new designer for me. She seems to have a similar vibe to EF. They both share a minimal, modern and yes, architectural mix with fluid lines. This look is very appealing to me and I find it difficult to replicate without purchasing directly from these designers or being on a dedicated to search to find asymmetric, interesting drapes, rouging etc.

I think Birks can definitely work within this style.

As for clothes, I think it depends on how closely you want to achieve a Stella/EF look. And if you are adding etherial ...well that just seems like a pretty significant departure from EF (architectural and modern.) In fact, I might even say that ethereal with architectural isn't cohesive. UNLESS you are talking about color. I can see ethereal colors in architectural pieces.

Additionally, I would consider just where you are on the classic to modern spectrum. Stella/EF feels pretty modern to me while the DVF jacket and the JCrew skirt feel pretty classic. And the floral blouses you have selected seem on the classic side. I would think that a Stella/EF floral might have a much more modern feel.

I am very much in the same boat with you...significant wardrobe refreshing mode. But I am very certain I want to go for modern (and minimal). EF/Stella are right in my sweet spot. And I am clear on color palette.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this all comes together for you. Challenging. But rewarding.

Echo, I'm glad I didn't order the Lafayette blouse. I agree with you that it looks matronly, and after reconsideration, it definitely looks too billowy for my frame! I was attracted to the color (Topaz), but I already purchased a shirt dress from Lafayette in a similar color (Aquarium). I attached them both again so you can see how similar they are. I do love blue-green in any shade.

I have been thinking about the Vince Camuto blouse and what to do about bra straps, and then I remembered that I have clear replacement straps for my bra! They work very nicely and unless someone is really hunting, are not visible under a sheer top. If you don't have these, you should get some! I swear by them!! :-)

Joy, I am experimenting a bit here. This is more drape than I have tried in the past, but I am trying to keep it long and linear and relatively close to my body as opposed to flared (if that makes any sense?) I'm also hoping that the high collars will help. You are correct that the proportions are going to be key and I will have to see how it all comes together.

I love your suggestion to try true white or aqua with the mint (if the blazer fits!). I also wonder if periwinkle would work? The equipment floral blouse looks like it could work, plus I have a pretty silk periwinkle shell. Maybe a solid light yellow although that may carry things into Easter M&M Candy territory?

Summer, I am happy to hear your feedback. I also like the color of the Bobeau asymmetric sweater. It's a good fit with my wardrobe and since I have owned them before, I was excited to find it. I will definitely post pictures as items arrive, especially if I decide to keep them.

The Stella Carakasi pieces are very interesting, Staysfit, and seem to fit your aspirational style well. Of the items you've shown here, I really like that asymetric cardigan. Again, it reflects your style well, and it's such a beautiful colour. I also think the white/ivory? jacket fits the bill, too. The angular collar gives you the architectural element you're after, I think. All are lovely pieces, and I hope they work out for you. I hope we'll see some photos when you have made your final decisions.

I will be watching with interest which pieces work for you. I am challenged to look feminine with my boney angles and so many draped styles just draw attention to the problem. I think that you are on the right track with structural geometric pieces but getting proportions right can be difficult.
I have an AT spring blazer in that pale green of the JCrew one. The color is so fragile that I usually wear a true white or an aqua about the color of the EF top pictured. I don't think ivory tops would work as well, at least on me...too wash out.

I love the Birkenstocks, and I don't think the Gizeh style is dated at all. Indeed, these are likely a fresher take on the trend since they are not the Arizona style that is everywhere and widely copied. And the pink colour and white soles on these are beautiful.

I LOVE the Equipment blouses and the EF top, and I think they both look like they would fit your style. The Kut blouse I'd have to see on, but it strikes me as a less classic floral and the colours are less pleasing to me than the Equipment. The Vince Camuto top is nice, but the sheer shoulders would make undergarments difficult unless you want straps to show.

You definitely need to post a WIW with the ballerina cardis. That looks like a fabulous piece, and looks like it would be very flattering, too.

Volume doesn't bother me, and I like the other pieces in this mix with a little volume (esp. the Bobeau), but the Lafayette top looks a bit... matronly? Regardless, my first thought is that it would overwhelm you.

The items below seem to have a theme. They are mostly tops which is what I need for Spring and Summer. I hope they are in keeping with my Style Adjectives: Soft, Calm, Fresh, Classic, Polished. I am trying to add some interesting geometry or architectural interest to my silhouettes following the recent discussion of Kibbe types, etc. By architectural, I don't necessarily mean stiff looking, but different lengths, and shapes. My Kibbe type was strong Yang so I should be able to pull off straight and angular, but in my personal opinion straight paired with soft and light work best for me so I am trying to add an ethereal element at the same time; or at least to have a combination of crisp and soft, etc. The closest I have come to both architectural and soft are my Stella Carakasi purchases. Both of these additions came after the discussion about Kibbe types. I think my style adjectives may already allow for the ethereal, but it's harder to describe the architectural using my adjectives and I may just add it to the list, possibly subtracting classic?. (Thanks to Rachy for that term. )

The links below should lead to the Stella Carakasi items I purchased. I believe they are both sold out now in the color I purchased (Cloud), but you can at least get some idea of what I mean by soft architectural architectural/ ethereal architectural. I will do my best to post some pictures because these pieces look very interesting and I think of them like beautiful fabric sculpture that I get to wear.

http://www.stellacarakasi.com/.....1160334776

http://www.stellacarakasi.com/.....1160321592

In addition to the Carakasi pieces above, I either have ordered, or already have received the following items:

1. I bought the pearly white Birkenstock Florida's already. This style has been a staple in my closet for years and finding them in a new color is great, although I think they will be hard to keep clean.

2. Pink Birkenstock Gizeh's - These are to replace a pair of black patent leather Gizeh's. Is this style dated? These will not be my only shoes for the summer.

Anyone who knows me is aware that I will be making several trips to my favorite local shoe store and probably scouring the internet as well. Still looking for the perfect pair of comfortable all white sneakers.

3. An assortment of florals: I already own the Equipment Colleen Floral top (blue) pictured below. I love it, and think it's one of my best Spring/Summer purchases so far besides the Carakasi, and the Vince Camuto dress I posted a few weeks ago.. It has a small low contrast print. I thought I would try another low contrast print with the Eileen Fisher sleeveless mandarin collar top which is a longer tunic style, plus it will work with some other items in my closet and maybe the dewberry boatneck linen high low tunic below. I'm unsure of the charcoal color? I liked it's shape and don't have anything like it currently in my closet.

I would like to branch out of my comfort zone and try a higher contrast larger floral print to see how that works. My favorite is the Equipment Reese top with a yellow background and blue roses. My favorite top from fall/winter was a Reese poplin button down, so I know the cut of this shirt will work. It's the pattern I'm wondering about. I am also attracted to the Kut from the Kloth top. Do the sheer panels fit with my style or do they make the top too busy? I like the sleeve length, and thought maybe the sheer panels added some illusion of geometry at the top?

4. I am a devoted DVF Ballerina Cardigan collector. I don't think I've posted any WIW's of myself wearing them, but I have two already. One is for winter and one for spring/summer. Both are ivory. I wear them with jeans and with skirts/dresses. I prefer solids, but if anyone is interested they have some interesting gingham prints on the DVF website. I think this counts as adding geometry, plus I don't think it gets more classic than a wrap sweater. This one makes me happy so I wanted to share :-)

5. Assorted tops, mostly blue because that's what I was searching for (blue, green and pink)

6. A white linen Regent blazer which I hope will fit (from J Crew). I tried on a larger size in the regular earlier this year, and I ordered it one size smaller in a tall instead of regular.

7. A Bobeau Asymmetrical Cardigan - I love these handy cardigans. They are great for travel. They fit in my purse. They don't wrinkle. They are light but warm so they are good for an air conditioned space or the evening in the summer over a sleeveless dress.

8. A J Crew Cotton Pencil skirt with an interesting geometric print, that I have no idea how I would wear??? Any thoughts? ( I may end up returning this one.) Print skirts confuse me.

Two items I am thinking about but have not ordered and would love your opinion about: Should I or shouldn't I?? Is this Lafayette NY 148 top too billowy for me?

A Mint Green Ludlow Blazer. Most blazers don't fit, but I'm always trying to find one that will. The picture makes the mint color look a little more washed out than I would like. Any tall people who have experience with this style? ( I have a lot of Ivory tops to wear along with it if it would work). My usual fit issues are the sleeves are too short, and there is too much fabric across the back when I order a size to fit my shoulders and sleeve length. ( I am not broad shouldered, just long)
