I actually tried the same jeans and had the same issue. I think they might have liked nice on me but I also couldn't get over that much stiff fabric on my bottom half - it made me feel Stumpy and rectangular. I felt the same as you do - I actually don't mind wide legged if the fabric is flowy and thinner so it collapses against my body. But stiff fabric that stands out just doesn't feel as flattering on me.

I agree with you on these, Janet, and I’m not sure my eye will ever adjust to this cut of jeans. If I have a choice between JFE and flattering I will always go with the most flattering style.

I like the jeans on you but agree that it's hard to adjust to this new length. I was in NYC yesterday and that length was everywhere in the stores. I had a denim pair like this that I passed on as from the side view my legs looks like enormous planks lol.I have a pair that are cropped that I plan to wear with boots that for some reason fit better, they were cheap from H&M.
I feel as though the tops are too busy and you may be happier with something more solid to create a column of color. All this being said if uncomfortable and not feeling fab = NO GOOD!

(After reading the comments:)

I realize that I might be in the minority, but it's good to see that Angie and some others too love #1 and #2 on you.

Sorry that you yourself don't like this ensemble, where the proportions look striking on you. But of course, I agree that if you don't like it, there's no point in purchasing it. If the fabric feels stiff and unpleasant, I totally understand that you don't want to wear it.

How about trying another pair of wide trousers, in a different fabric? And please be aware that tucking your top is absolute NOT necessary. Quite the contrary. With long wide trousers, a tucked top might make the upper body look disproportionately small, in particular if you have a short waist.

Untucked slightly fitted tops often look great with wide trousers and make for elegant proportions! (In my humble opinion, this is stunningly illustrated in #1 and #-2.) Though the hemline of an untucked top (if patterned or in a contrast colour) might create a strong, widening, horizontal line across the hips, WIDE LONG trousers--in contrast to narrow or tapered ones--create a long straight or A-line BELOW the hemline of the top, and this line makes the hips look slimmer.

(Before I read the comments, I just want to say this, which is my immediate reaction:)

I LOVE #1 and#2 on you. Gorgeous! You look young, yummy and fab.

In the next outfits, the shape/lines of the crops don't harmonize so well with your upper body as the elegant wide long trousers do. And the ankle boots don't look quite right with the length of the crops, but could possibly be replaced by other footwear.

That’s true! Don’t force.
Just know if you’re ever stranded & stuck being given wide legs with this length to wear, others will think you’re golden. :p

I wore this length on all my wide leg jeans for years. It was a length I didn’t need to hem. Then finally thought it should be long like talked about here and donated them all last year.
I now want them back! It’s another reminder to do what works for you. Regardless what anyone else thinks or does.
Now they’re ‘stylish’!

This IS the trendy new shorter full length. Believe it or not - it has grown on me, with a tucked top and flats.

I TOTALLY understand Janet and Katerina’s preference for FLOOR skimming lengths. I love that too! That was and is perfect pant lengths forever and ever. Very luxurious.

We will be discussing the new shorter long length in the blog.

To my eye, the “problem” with these jeans is the length. I would love them on you if only they were full lenght. I still have a problem adjusting my eye to this lenght, in particular the rear view, where I would like them to almost touch the floor. I know the slightly shorter length is the “now” lenght, but I am not there yet.

I liked the jeans the first time I looked, but the second time I see that although they are fitted through the hip, they seem to have extra fabric in the thigh--not good if they are heavier weight. Seems like they should fall straighter and the flare should be more gradual.

This is nit-picking however. Overall I think you look great and well proportioned.

Most wool and cashmere is too itchy for me now, so I wait until cooler weather and wear silk ls undershirts. I only bought 5 cotton sweaters from Boden last spring. Now I wish I'd bought every color they had.

I am laughing now because I realize I probably sound like a crank. I don’t mean to. I sincerely appreciate all the encouragement and suggestions, but I guess it really does come down to feel. I feel about as far from sexy and cool in these as I ever have in a pair of jeans. Changing today after workout and shower, I tried them on again and just can’t shake the feeling. I can see many of the points you all are making, but I think for me, high-rise + wide leg + weighty denim do not feel good. By contrast, the moderate high rise + wide leg + full length + drapey lightweight fabric made the Theory pants feel great! I’m learning what works for me, so I guess time spent with these pants is not totally wasted.

Ok, if I am going to be honest here, I think I don’t like the sweater in #1 with the jeans and that combo is distracting me from evaluating the jeans fairly. Maybe if you styled them differently you would like them more too?

I can get the concept of how a wide leg might be more balancing on my body — I think that’s true when I’ve tried the Theory slit hem wide legs. But I think the short length of these and the width they add to my side view are skewing my impressions. I really don’t like the length from the front — it reminds me of the flood length pants my mom made me wear as a kid. LOL

Ok- here’s something I couldn’t put my finger on before but here goes : I actually think the long wide legs are more balancing on your body than the Zara’s . At least with the types of tops you are showing us here . It’s quite noticeable to my eye now that I look at it again . But , as everyone had said , if you don’t like it , forget it . I did a try - on session with a long pleated midi and a semi tucked top yesterday and felt like an absolute HOUSE . The store owner kept insisting it looked good but nothing felt remotely attractive about it at all . Hard pass .

I'll take your fail over a lot of my own "successes"--haha! I love the wide-leg jeans on you. I agree the leopard print top is too roomy in the underarm area. I would like to see the reptile print top with the wide-leg jeans, if you were at all on the fence about the jeans--though it sounds like you aren't. You gotta love 'em, or you won't wear them, and then what's the point, right?

Thank you for showing us.

What are you smoking, Janet???

:)

THE BR FLARES LOOK AMAZING! I love them on you! You have a smashingly yummy bottom. These look so hip, trendy and now! Your long leg line wears them beautifully, and they are PERFECT with the trendy new chunky sneaks!

That said, I am always on the side of the wearer. YOU have to feel fab in them too. No use me telling you that they look amazingly fab, when you don't feel it. Have you tried the wrap in #5 with them?

Pity about the itchy zebra pullover - NICE Zambia Safari incorporation.

Too bad about that zebra sweater but itchy sweaters are the worst. I see what you mean about the jeans. They don't look bad on you but they don't look as good as bootcuts. I think they make you look sort of straight. Maybe something with more drape and movement would work better?

I really love the zebra top. Maybe wear it with different jeans. These wide legs look good on you, but if you don’t feel good in them, then maybe they aren’t for you.

What a bummer that those didn't work for you - especially the zebra sweater - it is really cute! Thank you for posting your fails and why they don't work for you; I find it really helpful when I try to assess my own fails.

Janet, I really like the jeans. I think you look sensational in them! But you have to like them, and I understand what you are saying. It does take getting used to (the new silhouette) and some denim feels so stiff. You might prefer the silhouette in a fabric with more drape, as you said.

I think the sweater is the wrong cut. Maybe not the wrong size but just the wrong shape. Onwards!

Aw, thanks, everyone. I just looked at the photos again this morning, and I really wonder what you all are seeing that I am not, because I swear I look 20 lbs bigger in those jeans than I do in other pants! LOL, maybe it's because they FEEL heavy. Not a good feeling when I'm already feeling heavy myself. When I wore those chambray/linen wide legs the other day I didn't feel that way (granted, those are more of a mid rise so they don't feel like they're coming all the way up to my bra strap, and that's really important). I think I've figured out my comfort level with wide legs, and I'm ok with that.
