Here is my photo. We were married in 1976. The dress was off the clearance rack in a dept. store. Mom had to take it in by a few inches since I only weighed 115 lb. and probably a few less by wedding day. I always hated that it was too short, but hey, we were homemade and thrift store dressers, and I only paid $65 and had free alterations.</p> <p>Now I don't know where it is - long gone. I think it was lost between parents' moves as it was always at their house. Or knowing Mom, she remade it or donated it to the local theater costume department, where she made costumes for years. I wanted to wait, but my now-husband was insistent that we get married before the babies came. I suggested a quiet city hall type of thing but this was his first (and hopefully last) wedding and *he* wanted a real church wedding. We ended up pulling off a really lovely wedding with musicians &amp; professional singers (who sang Ave Maria just before I walked down the aisle), a really nice reception and about 100 guests, all planned in 6 weeks!</p> <p>When I went shopping for a dress I decided I was not going to try to disguise my pregnancy. Everyone coming knew darn good and well that I was expecting twins and sooner rather than later. In the end though, I found a beautiful dress that fit almost perfectly with no alterations. I still had a very small waist, and this dress came in tight at the waist and then fell in an A-line. I felt so pretty! I did my own hair (with help from my neice) in my bombshell-style retro do. </p> <p>The problem I had was that my usually very large chest had swelled to truly gigantic proportions. Even at the specialty bra shop they did not have a strapless that could work. I had to just trust that pulling the strings very tightly in the back would keep things g-rated. It worked at first, but as the day went on I had a harder and harder time keeping the dress up! I cringe at some of the pictures. Yikes!</p> <p>I'm wearing a pearl necklace I inherited from my grandmother and some diamond &amp; sapphire earrings that had been a gift many moons ago.</p> <p>This was my 3rd marriage but my first real wedding. Mom made the veil for me. There was supposed to be a slip with hoops in it to make the skirt poof out a bit but I didn't find out until I started getting dressed that when I ordered it in a custom size to fit my waist, all they did was make the elastic longer -- they didn't change the size of the whole slip, so it didn't fit around my hips!</p> <p>It was rainy and cold on the day, even though it was mid-June, and I kind of wished I had a shawl or a jacket -- the church is in the village where my husband grew up, built in the 1600s, with no heating!</p> <p>At the time of the wedding I was preoccupied with my PhD so I didn't actually care very much about the details. I felt a bit like a human marshmallow, thought my hair looked awful (my fancy hairdo fell down as soon as I left the beauty salon because of the humidity), and in retrospect I wish that I hadn't let my sister convince me to wear the silly tiara. I'm so embarrassed about "the hat". Do over only pertains to the hat though - the groom would be the same in a heart beat! My original dress plan was something very simple but none really worked until I ran across this "beauty". I know it's almost Princess Diana-ish on top, but it was one of those situations (back in the olden 1985 style days) where I put this dress on and it was "it". Also very inexpensive relative to the others.</p> <p>Rain storms all morning the day of the wedding then blue skies and sun in time for the ceremony! They were my wedding flowers, tied by the purple ribbon. The dress was made of heavy satin after only one fitting - the seamstress took my measurements in December and I was back to try it on for the first time about 10 days before the day, 5 months later.</p> <p>My only jewelry was the pearl necklace I got as a gift from my MIL. Traditionally, back home brides are given golden jewelry on their wedding day, but I'm not into gold too much and have only one golden necklace I love wearing, so I asked for an exception and everyone was happy. </p> <p>Mr. O had a suit purple embodied waistcoat with the morning suit.</p> <p>We wanted a small and simple wedding with the closest people in our lives and did everything low-key, but there were numerous details that made the day very special and even today some of our friends say "ah, *your* wedding was so great" ;-)</p> <p>We made our own invitations and our favorite poet's verse on the cover... 3 years later I had met the man himself at the evening recital to which I brought one invitation and he had signed it for us... It was a sunny, warm day in August, we had a church wedding with our friends and family, and I have so many fond memories from it. One of them is of the old veteran car - an Opel Cortina, I believe - my friend's Granddad had in his garage - it was brought out for the occasion and we drove it from church to the reception. I was all of 22.</p> <p>My dress was based on a pattern I came across and modified and my dear MIL made for me. The details aren't clear in the pics but it was a skirt and top - the top was in satiny fabric and the skirt was a couple of layers of soft tulle. My veil was lovingly made by my sister in law.</p> <p>#1 and #3 are posed photos but #2 and #5 are my favourites. It's so much fun to see all your dresses and to get a glimpse of your special days!</p> <p>I don't have digital photos, so the quality of these is not the best. I designed my dress as well. It was a narrowish a-line in off-white silk and covered completely with organza. Over that, I wore a long organza jacket with only 3 buttons so that it opened out as I walked. I struggled a bit with the seamstress to make it as streamlined as I wanted. I love the way it turned out, but could have done without a little more poof in the skirt. Nonetheless, I've always loved it. </p>
