Good advice, Liz. I could learn to shop sales as a "store within a store." I will just have to avoid sales for sale's sake and get over the "it is such a great buy, I had to buy it, didn't I?"

@Sterling. What a great realization! I just wanted to chime in and say that planning and shopping sales aren't mutually exclusive. But the planning has to trump the sale when it comes to making a purchasing decision.

I have a very small clothing budget and shop sales and clearance exclusively. But I don't buy simply because an item is on sale. I just view the sales and clearance section as the "store within a store" that I'm shopping in, and subject my buys to the same scrutiny I would if I were buying full price.

Me again. Sorry if I am hogging the thread. I have been introspective lately.

I quite by accident hit upon the primary reason for my wardrobe churn. Since understanding the reason for my wardrobe churn was my goal for the week, I thought I would return to share ... just in case this is helpful to others.

Wardrobe churn was explored on Zoiechic's thread: http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....e-turnover.

I wanted to come back to this because I have been pondering Suz's plan versus my lack of plan. I remain convinced it is my lack of a plan that leads to wardrobe churn.

I'm planner by nature, how can I not have a plan for wardrobe shopping? It makes absolutely no sense. THEN it occurred to me. I am a sales shopper. I shop the sales and buy depending on what I find and how good the price is. Thus, no plan and lots of churn. MUST STOP SHOPPING SALES. They are not the margins I thought they were.

So as I mentioned above in this thread, I am implementing a shopping fast from now until January 2, 2017. I am also going to evaluate my sales shopping strategies. Obviously they have not served me well.

Hi Texstyle. I don't so much lose my clothes as I forget I own them. I transition my wardrobe seasonally and those items tucked away in bins are so easily forgotten for me. Like they never even existed.

And StyleFan. I gotta believe that Hamilton, the city, is great. It just never occurred to me to think "city" because I have Hamilton the Broadway Show on my brain. I am planning on buying the mixed tape on December 2nd and an early Christmas present to myself. YAY. Christmas is here!!!!!

Just an update: The flowy FP tunic I pictured didn't work at all. It was HUGE. I even ordered down a size but it was like a very big dress, past my knees. Funny at best. The other top hasn't arrived yet.

I did make progress in the jeans quest. I found a pair I already own! Do you ever lose an item in the darkness of your closet? I need better lighting.

Thanks Chris987 -- I myself am not sure it is possible .... especially given the upcoming Holiday shopping. I will be at the mall quite a bit during November preparing for the Holidays. Nonetheless, it is a goal to shot for.

Staysfit -- I understand why you weren't able to play with your wardrobe. How is the foot/ankle doing? Any improvement? I think planning for 2017 is a fabulous idea. I can't say that I have any wardrobe goals right now.

Karie -- let me know how your evaluation of closet churn goes. I am interested in how you plan on evaluating it. I considered running the numbers, but I didn't think that told the whole story and would be misleading.

Hope you are feeling better, El Cee.

Thanks for keeping this going El Cee. I'm looking for booties too. With all the hundreds (thousands?) of pairs available why is it so hard to find what you want ?

Texstyle I'm also trying to refine my jeans choices, and a feminine blouse is on my maybe list so will be interested in your updates.

Suz, your closet stories are great, I too love those covered hangers they are so much better than the metal or plastic ones. Of course you deserve more shoes, storage space or not!

Sterling, maybe the churn is not so bad after all. Good luck on your fast...that will not be easy!

bonnie, refreshing your hiking wardrobe sounds like fun, there are so many choices these days! An EB just opened in a very close by shopping area to me. I have a couple of workhorse pieces of sporty outerwear from them, one which I've had for more than 20 years. Great quality.

Brooklyn good luck with your culottes and maximal stylings!

Barbara Dianne love your goals, they are very specific and small enough to be easily achievable. That's the best way to set goals IMHO.-)

Joy good luck with your Thanksgiving planning. Can't believe it's so close...

peacechick good luck with your cashmere cardigans. I have a lovely collection too of classic ones, but I'm just not feeling them this year so they will stay put away. No way I'm getting rid of them I will follow your ideas with interest...

Staysfit, good that you adjusted your goals to meet your real life. Your overall plan is terrific!

Karie - good luck on your goals...and can totally relate to setting a goals and then not meeting it and having to start again

Carter, love hearing about your transition to beach living.

I’ve not been posting much lately, been busy with a bunch of non-YLF stuff. About 3 weeks ago I posted my challenge in El Cee’s challenge series. I posted a long reply in another one of her postings but want to summarize now after 3 full weeks.

The challenge was to wear outfits for my real life. I will incorporate a few new things but mostly this will be stuff from my closet. I'm trying to find a balance between my casual real life and my desire to be stylish, and this challenge will help me assess where I am on this journey. Part of it will to be very realistic about the days I do stuff only at home and wear very simple sporty clothes.

I’ve been doing this, and continueing tracking what I wear daily, and I’ve discovered some wardrobe holes that I'm working to fill. Also I'm finding that I love (or really like) what I’m wearing only about half of the time. I’ve demoted some older things to “at-home-only” so that part of my
wardrobe is well stocked. I’ve been learning (or confirming) that the last year or two of my working life, when ended at the end of 2015, were so busy and stressful that I payed very little attention to fashion while still buying new things that mostly bore me to tears now. If I had found YLF at that time I would have had zero time to spend on it. :-).

I have clothes to wear, but I’m still feeling a bit too casual about half of the time when I’m out and about. Too casual only by my own definition and desires, I’m sure I’m perfectly presentable!

As of Oct 1 I have an ok but small collection of sweaters, jeans, toppers, and ankle boots but mostly very basic, and the color palate is mostly darker neutrals in black/grey with a little red/burgundy and white . Only about a half dozen really warm winter sweaters. No cashmere except one cocoon sweater and 6 lovely but classic cardigans that I just do not want to wear this year. They will stay put away. Very small number of jeans. A few nice toppers.

Wardrobe holes include low-heel, fairly dressy/classy ankle boots in non-black colors (stores don’t have what I want, so I continue to do a lot of ordering/returning which is a slow slog given how big and heavy the boxes are), building up a larger collection of modern jeans and sweaters, and I could use one or more new toppers. None of these are desperate needs so I’m trying to have fun with it. I have found some new pieces although I have not worn too many of them yet.

I also revised my overall wardrobe goals.

My plan is to do WIW postings as I find new things to fill these holes and wear them.

El Cee and Suz, I hope you are all better soon. I spent most of October under the weather with a cold, then sinus infection, then ear ache. I have a few goals this week:

1. Hem that last pair of pants in the pile (oh wait. That was a goal last week. Oh well...).

2. Start to evaluate my closet per Suz's "Churn" thread (not sure how far I'll get on this one, but I want to start).

3. Stop purchasing. I went over my budget this fall and I'm done.

And to answer Suz's question, of course you need more shoes, dear. How about a pair of over-the-knee boots? I just bought a pair yesterday (wait...wasn't my goal #3 to stop...? Oh yes, that starts today...)!

My original challenge was to wear all my fall/winter shoes and use them to build outfits, then I was going to weed out the ones that didn't fit well, or didn't feel good after a full days wear. Clearly that challenge had to be sidelined after I injured my foot! It's hard to wear both shoes now!

Instead, I'm working on a complete summary of my current style, and a wardrobe plan and budget for next year. My goal is to curtail my spending and purchases on clothing in 2017 and feel like I need a thoughtful plan. My wardrobe is in a good place. I like my style, I can easily build flattering outfits that make me happy, feel comfortable and fit my lifestyle. While I plan to keep my wardrobe updated, I do not want closet bloat or churn. I have a moderately large wardrobe but it serves me well, and I make use of everything. Traditionally, I have kept individual clothing items until they wear out or until I am tired of them and then I give them to my DD who wears the same size. She then wears them until they wear out. My biggest wardrobe hole is a easy care travel capsule, which I have need of now because I have an empty nest and can more easily join my DH when he goes to meetings, or my mother who is a globe trotter. The travel wardrobe will be a particular challenge because I need to carry some medical equipment with me so my clothing needs to take up even less space and weight than most.

DH and I have settled upon some fairly substantial financial goals for the next few years which means that sticking to my budget is now very important. I am terrible at following budgets. I set up a separate bank account and debit card, but when I went over, I jus transferred more money! I clearly need some safeguards to prevent this from happening. I am thinking about what those can be as part of this challenge. Would following a plan like the 5 piece wardrobe be helpful? I am not sure? I want to keep my wardrobe fresh but not overspend. I am not sure that 5 pieces is enough for me. I might do more like 10 per season group, and not count my basics, essentials, gear or replacements of anything I have now that wears out.

The last part of my challenge is that I keep thinking it would be nice to track wears, keep track of purchases and happiness factor for what I wear and even take daily pictures. I would even like to plan a weeks worth of outfits out in advance so I am not scrambling in the morning to get ready. My big problem here is often time, consistency, and remembering to do these tasks. So far the best system has been jotting everything down in a calendar. It doesn't always include a photo. I suppose I would have more time for pictures if I had outfits planned in advance, but I'm that person that puts something on and then decides it doesn't feel right and needs to change it up. I waste a lot of time! I sometimes end up picking a FFBO.

So my new challenge is to work out a plan to address all of these concerns over the next few weeks and have it ready to go so I can start practicing it in December, look for problems, fix them and then fully implement it in January.

My upcoming challenge as a way of getting control of wardrobe churn is to go on a shopping fast from now until the January 2, 2017. This is a real shopping fast. I am not including caveats like I read in some blogs. How is it a legitimate shopping fast, if you add all these "I'll stock up on basics" or "I'll pick up a few sweaters if I find them on sale?"

What is great about this challenge is I'll be better positioned for Christmas gift buying and it will help me address my sales addiction. I won't be able to buy even if the sale price is just too good to pass up. I will pass it up. I haven't added "I'll stop browsing online, but that would be the ultimate challenge." I'm not there just yet.

So .... returning to my problem of wardrobe churn, I have had quite an urge to shop recently. Thanks to this thread (and Suz's thread) I was hyper aware of my motivating emotions.

My shopping urge was brought on by three emotions acting simultaneously: (1) some emotional stress stemming from an old family situation (shopping is a distraction); (2) Nordstorms is having a sale featuring forty percent discounts (OMG, a sale); and (3) I feel I deserve a "reward." So it seems to be the perfect storm.

I have opted not to buy because I can see how my emotions are driving my actions. Yay. This is a huge success.

(I might need a reward.)

Hi Barbara Diane -- the shows are really fun. The shows I have attended seem to have it all (polished rocks and minerals, jewelry making beads and supplies, antique native American jewelry). Everything you can imagine for as far as you can see.

I am developing an interest in learning how to make necklaces using the beads I see at the shows. Some of the beads are beyond gorgeous. I have not done anything beyond look and ask questions so far. I may look into classes (I hadn't thought of that before).

Beth Ann -- I am looking into long-line vests. They look so glamorous to me! The problem is I have a hard time envisioning how they would fit into my lifestyle. I would wear them at work, but would they be comfortable to sit in? That question is what stops me from making a purchase. Oh, and I run hot!! I keep searching for this "artic air conditioning" people speak of.

I am so jealous that you saw Hamilton, Style Fan!! This is definitely on my "to-do dream list." I eagerly await pictures of your hair and brows. I need to get my brows done. Perhaps this will be the impetus I need to move on that.

Carter -- Enjoy not shopping. It means you have more time for other things. How are things going at the gym and with your nutrition? Does HHI have a good gym? It almost has to, right?

Sterling, aren't the shows amazing. There are many different types around here. As a kid we collected small tumbled rocks, and I've always loved slabs of stones and minerals.

It would probably be more accurate to say I made jewelry. I haven't made much in quite a while, as I am working on purging things, making some choices regarding my house, and breaking some habits, such as spending a lot of time considering events to go to and cutting the information out on all manner of things, but rarely doing them. And then looking at the papers again and again. I'm trying to figure out how to figure out and commit to what I will do.

The good news is that I have mostly turned DS2's room into a craft room.

I have taken a lot of classes but I usually never do the technique again. And I am cutting way down on purchases, as I have a lot of materials. Sometimes I think I like the hit of a new idea or technique or material more than the actual creating of the jewelry.

Trying to catch up with all of the challenges I've missed since the start of my new job. Sounds like y'all have been busy!

Suz: I'm in awe of your closet, and your fab, but well curated, shoe collection. I also love the new flocked hangers. Things stay put on them, and they take less space while looking neater!

Sterling: I'm another one who runs warm. In addition to cardis, I like unlined jackets with a little stretch, and I now have two gillets.

Great job running the challenge ElCee! I'm hope to be able to join you occasionally!

Thanks for doing this El Cee. I am far behind in posting. I have purchased a few things and I have planned my travel capsule for our month in Montreal. I also went to Hamilton and got my hair cut! Yeah! Finally! I also got my brows done at the Benefit brow bar in Sephora. I am all updated for Montreal.
I have had my brows done in lots of places and this was by far the best. I was so impressed with this woman. She did a fantastic job. She did not remove very much and just did a little reshaping. I love my brows. Okay enough of that.
I will try and post some pics of my new hair. I am also redoing my make up. I bought brown mascara and am going to try that instead of black.
Hopefully I will get my shopping list for 2016-17, travel capsule and hair posted soon.

Ack! I'm so far behind. I think I missed week 6 entirely. I'll look forward to reading everyone's progress while I sit here stuck in the car repair shop:-(.

I finally got my "half move" done last week. We're still mostly stuck in Atlanta for a variety of reasons, but the beach house is becoming a comfortable respite.

From a wardrobe perspective, I made little progress last week, but I should say that my beach wardrobe is serving me very well. I took down a couple cotton sweaters last week, and I think I'm well set for awhile. Best news of all...my long-delayed washer and dryer finally arrived at the beach last weekend. Total love. I think I did 6 loads of laundry last weekend just because I could;-)

This week I'm continuing to purge the wardrobe (and everything else) and work through what my needs are likely to be for beach living. Also, while it's still not time to bring out any cold weather clothes or shoes, I do think it's about time to put away the sleeveless tops. Hope to get that done this week. Oddly, I have zero interest in clothes shopping these days. Even my husband noticed I haven't bought anything in quite awhile. I'm not sure exactly why this is...the big purge, not yet knowing what I'll want to wear when we're at the beach full time, the lack of cold weather, or maybe the plethora of wool (to which I'm allergic) in the shops today. Whatever it is, it's nice to take some time to appreciate my wardrobe for what it is today.

Welcome to the challenge, Peacechick.

Thanks for the affirmation, Joy. I hope you feel better soon. There is definitely something going around. So many people I know are sick with something.

Barbara Diane -- I did not know you made jewelry. What a fun hobby. I have just recently started going to rock/gem shows. I have been amazed at the gorgeous beads that are available. My interest is definitely piqued.

I feel your pain, Brooklyn. I whisper to myself "look at the money you are saving." I hope in time, with practice, I will stop looking at heavy sweaters and coats all together. Great pair of culottes. I am still looking for a pair for myself. Work and travel interrupted my search and I haven't really resumed. Perhaps your pair will stimulate renewed interest on my part.

Kiwigal -- I don't think my clothes wear out. My churn seems to result from a desire/need to buy something new and interesting. The new item becomes the instant favorite and the older items go unworn until they end up in the donation box. Most of the items are two-to-three years old when they are donated. Only very, very cheap tee shirts don't last longer than a year.

Suz -- I am researching featherweight cashmere sweaters at J Crew. Everything about them seems perfect for my lifestyle and my climate. I just don't want them to be sheer(ish). This is becoming a pet peeve. I do not want to see dark pants beneath the sweater.

Bonnie -- Congratulations on updating your hiking capsule. What a great and fun idea. I know that would inspire me to hike much more. In fact, I am going hiking on Sunday.

El Cee, I should probably have said slim profile or something -- they are just a narrow coated hanger: https://www.bedbathandbeyond.c.....it-hangers

Anyway, for me it was a question of replacing non-matching plastic ones that took up a fair bit of space and that my shirts kept falling off.

I do like the way they look, too.

Joining this thread with my challenge for late Fall and Winter. This season my challenge is to wear my cashmere cardigans and sweaters. For the last three or four years, they've been in storage on account of having a baby and all the spills and stains that come with one. But it's such a pity to have a cashmere collection and never wear it, so I've picked out five to wear all winter. I hope I will be able to take care of them. One is a vintage Ballantyne scottish cardigan I absolutely love and I was sad to read here that the mill has closed down.

A secondary challenge is to wear my skirts. I've recently acquired two midi length skirts and need to make the effort to wear them. I naturally default to a jeans or dress formula so skirts tend to get ignored.

My challenges have gone by unfinished as I've not been feeling well and so busy. I need to keep working at just getting out fall/winter things and figuring out what I have/need. Since it is November, this week and next I want to especially locate and update outfits for the holidays. Including Thanksgiving.
It is fun to read about everyone's challenges and helps me to think of what I could/should be doing. Suz, great job on the closet. Bonnie, the hiking items look great. I need hiking boots. Sterling, I always thought that one of the advantages of a small wardrobe would be frequent churn because things would wear out more quickly. It would justify the churn and shopping

First of all, feel better El Cee and Suz.

I got my clothes washed, and I have called the consignment store twice with a question without a response, so I plan to do ahead and go tomorrow. And I put my spring/summer clothes away. Yay!

I haven't spent time working on outfits, although I did make some when I was getting dressed.

Not much time this week with family here Friday through Tuesday so maybe 2 week goals again.
1. Get the clothes to consignment. Preferably Thurs. Definitely by Friday.
2. Go through scarves and decide which to donate to a fundraiser. And take them to the donation office.
3. Be prepared when I go to the bead show a week from Saturday by looking to see what I need to complete projects, and what outfits could use a new necklace for additional oomph.
4. Make a decision about the too large dressy outfits I just found when I put S/S away. It would prob. cost more to wash them than I receive from consigning them.

Suz, what are low profile hangers? I am intrigued. (And yes, you are very virtuous.)
Sterling, I have also given up on heavy sweaters and on long sleeve knit dresses. I now buy only cotton or fine wool/cashmere knits. And I really should resist coats too. It's sad.
I am still trying to put together some maximal(ish) outfits. I tried out a couple this week and took my poor busted skirt to the tailor so I will have some more to try when it returns. And I bought my first pair of culottes! So many exciting styling adventures are ahead of me

Suz - your closet looks terrific. My hangars are such a mixed bag - I have a few quality ones but many basic drycleaner ones and wire ones too.

Bonnie - I love your hiking purchases. Having decent gear is important and I find these types of purchases last a very long time so it is definitely worthwhile getting them right.

you get sick of your purchases after a short time

you see new things and want to add them in so get rid of the older things

they are orphans

Or some sort of combination of the above? The pieces that you are getting rid of are they less than one year old, less than two, or older. We all have churn - to some extent it is inevitable.

TexStyle - I like both those blouses, I find polyester okay in the shoulder seasons and winter, but agree not for the middle of summer.

El Cee - hope you get better soon!!

Bonnie, those look like GREAT hiking purchases. Mr. Suz and my daughter have super luck at EB. For some reason the fit is rarely right on me but the quality is great, I think.

I'm on a week's vacation and brought mostly hiking clothes because that's what we'll be doing. Today we took a break, and went for lunch, to the Museum of Northern Arizona, and shopped at EB which we do not have in our town. I have a fairly extensive hiking wardrobe but much of it is really worn and dated. I don't think I've bought new hiking pants since the aughts. My "Out and About" wardrobe is looking pretty good, so now I'm going to work on my hiking capsule. My new pants are called winter hikers but they're fitted and stretchy and comfy. I decided to stick to gray as my first basic color. Dark and light colors get dusty fast so medium colors will be best for me. I added a new style tee and plaid shirt because EB is having a 40% off sale.

El Cee and Suz - hope you get well soon.

El Cee: Good luck with the hacking - it's nice to get a new style pant just by hacking our old ones.

Suz: Your closet looks great - nice to see your boot collection.

texstyle: great blouses

Sterling: I can't wear heavy sweaters either because I get overheated easily. There are lots of great cardigans out there, though.
