Karie -- Those "get it done" type challenges are so important and worth the effort. I have a bag of stuff I need to take to the tailor and need to give that priority this next week. We can reward ourselves with some fun outfit creation time after the necessary alterations are complete. :-)

Elizabeth P -- Your realization that you can work your wardrobe seasons and outfit silhouettes around footwear is so smart. I could certainly benefit from applying that method to my own seasonal dressing. I am with you on the weight loss/fitness goals for the next few months. It is back to the gym for me. Pants too snug. ;-)

Guess it is agreed that we will continue to run the challenge for at least a few more weeks. I will put up a new weekly thread sometime tomorrow.

Elizabeth, your comment about seasons being based on footwear resonated with me. Since sandals and heels have been banished for medical reasons, seasonal changes from spring to summer to fall have actually been easier. At first I wondered what I would do in the summer as I hate having hot feet, but it is working out. The cropped flares and culotte trend is something I have yet to figure out as that style looks best to me with some heel. I bought a pair of Aquatalia wedges with Mary Jane straps that are not too bad but not the 12 hour comfort shoes I'd hoped.
El Cee, thank you for being so faithful to the challenge threads. They have helped me very much.

Elly -- Congrats on meeting most of your October challenge goals. You certainly get a pass on goal #3 as it is so hard to evaluate cool weather clothing when it is still so hot out. I was very late with that same goal this year due to the "extended summer" in my neck of the woods.

Joy -- Sounds as if you have that "extended summer" dilemma as well. Nothing we can do but roll with it, I guess. Temps just dropped for us last week, so I am finally able to pack up most of my summer stuff. Keeping a few tanks and light wraps out "just in case". :-)

Sterling -- Kudos to you on accomplishing your "buying for your climate" objective and for staying away from the "great sweater temptation". (I need to do the same. I run far too hot to be sporting heavier knitwear -- but am still so attracted to those pieces.) I find that seminars are such so challenging regarding guessing the most appropriate attire -- unless there is a specified dress code. I find I am either underdressed or overdressed for those events -- cannot seem to get it quite right... so I empathize with your recent concerns.

Bonnie -- That is a beautiful bag. Keeping my fingers crossed that your choice will be back in stock soon.

Chris987 -- Kudos to you on your challenge successes. Sounds like you have come to a good place with your wardrobe and that it is working well for you. I like the outfits you posted. I especially love the mock-neck lace-up sweater -- interesting cut and textural elements. It is fabulous on you. You and I are Bobeau Fleece Wrap Cardigan twins! (I wear mine a lot as it is so cozy.)

Jenn -- Love all your ensembles this week. You have such fabulous casual style. The Great Gatsby tee is super. Where did you find it? I also love the necklace in your third outfit. Stunning! Like you, I am back to working out more regularly. Yes -- It is a big time investment... but it will be worth it in the long run.

I wanted to chime in and say how much I've enjoyed reading these challenge posts. I've been somewhat overwhelmed with life lately and haven't been able to respond nearly as diligently as some of you, esp you, El Cee. But they have been so much fun to read. I'd love to see them keep going, even if the participants ebb and flow. But I can see how much work it is!

I have been keeping up with my personal challenge, to take advantage of the warmer weather and try to wear outfits with ankles or "slivers of skin" showing as much as possible. I think we have just made the move into true fall, so I feel I've done quite a good job at putting off my more wintery clothes as long as I can.

I think my next challenge is to do something about the weight that crept on over the summer and fall. I'm feeling dumpy... my clothes still fit, but they aren't as comfortable as they were, and I'll be d@#$%d if I'm replacing things because of it. I can't blame anything or anyone other than myself, so time to smarten up! I also have several new items purchased at NAS and the past couple of months, and I think the weather is finally cool enough to start playing with them. Some are longer pants, so need to make sure I get wears in before snow flies!

You know, something this challenge has done for me is realize that my seasons are (or can be) based on footwear. Which of course dictates silhouettes. It's been fun... I feel like I'm more focused, as there are things I have to wear NOW... and it's easier not to jump the gun. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but this is getting more wears in with my more seasonal items, and may help lessen some of the winter burn out.
Summer=sandals.
Early fall=flats (closed toe) peep toe booties, then booties, crops with skin showing
Fall= booties, bring out the flare and bootcut pants
Winter=tall boots once the snow flies... skinnier bottoms.

Whoa, this turned into a long post!!

My challenge this week isn's as much of a style challenge as a "get it done" challenge (which will then turn into a style challenge). It's to attack this pile of clothing alterations that I need to do, and finish them all so I can wear the clothes! Most of it just involves letting the hems down in pants so it's not even difficult - just time consuming. Then of course will come the challenge of styling!

Joy -- that is a really interesting comment regarding the temperature increase in Denver. I don't know enough about Raleigh to know if Fall temperatures are higher than average. It would be interesting to research.

I had so many challenges .....

One challenge was to start buying for my climate as opposed to my "fantasy ski chalet in Colorado." I have been successful. It takes a lot of resolve to walk away from gorgeous sweaters. Somehow I have managed to do it. That does not mean I didn't touch and caress them in the stores. I even tried them on a couple of times. I just didn't buy them.

A second challenge (although I hadn't realized it was a challenge at the time) was to pack for a four-day work seminar in Washington DC. I wanted to pack really light, but I wanted to have a wardrobe that would be appropriate for both the seminar and for a lot of walking regardless of weather.

I got lucky with the sightseeing. I had every single thing I needed and only one item went unworn (because it was just too warm to wear it). I felt comfortable and appropriate. My wardrobe fully met my needs.

I missed the mark entirely for the seminar. For some reason, I thought everyone would be dressed in "work casual." Nope. Suits.

The men wore exactly the same uniform: suits. About fifty percent of them wore a tie. Oddly, about fifteen percent of the men wore a plaid shirt with their suit. Is this a thing?

The women on the other hand expressed themselves though their outfits. I felt woefully undressed. The outfits ranged from suits to really nice dresses coordinated with a cardigan. I saw some large scarfs/shawls. All wore great shoes. Some wore heels that had to be five inches in height.

After some thought I understood how I had so missed the mark.

Looking at everyone's outfits for the week I realized that most are just too warm for the weather here yet. I was mostly wearing sleeveless shells and tanks, occasionally adding a light topper. Maybe we will have a cool down this week. El Cee, recently a Denver TV station said that Denver will have temperatures similar to Austin TX in about 20 years due to global warming. This fall temps are regularly 20 degrees above the normal...80's rather than the usual 60's for highs.
Chris, I can probably shop my closet for the rest of the year, especially as no one here has seen my wardrobe. We'll see if boredom sets in though. I am looking forward to wearing sweaters and jackets.

The month of October is over tomorrow and for the most part so are my October challenges.

1. I packed a capsule wardrobe in a "personal item" for a 6 day trip. Successful, but not stylish (fine for family, though!)

2. Challenge two was to wear all my warm weather clothes in their best combos while it is still hot. This was also a success, I wore every piece in my summer wardrobe during October. I loved some combos, hated others but got creative.

3. Challenge three was to pull out my winter clothes and evaluate what I had and play dress up and do necessary maintenance, as well as pack away summer things. I did pull some cardis out and do some de-pilling of items and decided that a couple of my summer things and a few winter things had given up the ghost. Unfortunately, the power in my closet is out and it is a black hole, plus it is still hitting the 90s every day. I used gift cards to replace 3 worn out work horses and fill a wardrobe hole. I will revisit this when it is cool enough to wear things in my house without sweating!

My challenge was 2 weeks of outfits for my real life. I’m really glad I did
this, thanks El Cee for the inspiration! I find I am shifting back to a more classic style now that I am more comfortable with how to be modern about it. I’m also enjoying a bit of maximalist which is not entirely new to me as I’ve always liked mixing texture and pattern. My fall/winter wardrobe is in pretty good shape although a bit small. Small works find for my real life, even though I’d prefer to have more. I do still have to think through how dressy vs casual I want to be almost every day and I’m not always satisfied with my choices, but it’s becoming easier.

The reality is that with the shopping I’ve done so far this fall, I do not NEED any new clothes. I could shop my closet for quite a while and be somewhere between ok and pretty satisfied with what I wear most of
the time with occasional days of fabulousness. That’s big progress for me since the beginning of the year.

What I still want includes ankle boots in burgundy and another color (not black), a few more higher-end sweaters in classic colors, a leopard bag, and maybe a new transitional season coat in a lighter color than the dark ones I have.

I chose one ok outfit (plus same with added topper), two pretty good, and two fab from the last few weeks. Bolded items shown in finds.

Red jeans, taupe sweater. The jeans are only ok no matter how I wear them. The sweater was a freebie due to a Macy’s error, and it’s just too long. That color taupe is never quite as good on me as warmer camels or tans but is ok This entire outfit and all it’s components are just “ok”.

Same outfit with a bobeau cocoon sweater and scarf. This sweater seems super-casual, probably because it's a lightweight sweatshirt knit. Plus it’s too voluminous on me, a style with less fabric would be more flattering. Add the scarf and my body
shape gets completely lost.

Grey flared trousers, rose print cashmere sweater, BR moto jacket, black western-ish booties. Not an everyday look, but I like the pattern mixing and the sweater is one I will keep forever because I love the color despite it’s slightly dated shape. I felt pretty good in this.

Dark Red Merino Vneck, a sleeveless blouse underneath, grey straight leg jeans Also pretty good.

Aubergine sweater, black skinnies, pearls (posted this one recently) - felt fab in this

Grey skinny cords, grey sleeveless tneck tunic, cream tneck t, cognac booties (posted this one too) - also fab.

El Cee: I've been thinking about getting a MZ Wallace bag ever since goldenpig's post a month or so ago. I've been waiting for a sale because she mentioned they were part of NAS and I thought maybe there might be a fall/winter sale soon. Well, the one she ordered is out of stock and my choice is backordered. My plan seems to be back firing, I didn't realize they were so popular. Thanks for all of the work you have put into keeping this thread going. It is really been helpful for me to focus on weekly goals to get all of the necessary wardrobe organization jobs done.

Stylefan -- Hope you feel better soon. Migraines stink! These seasonal changes can be so tough. How exciting that you will be going to Montreal! Would love to see your packing list (if you have time to post before you leave). I always learn so much from seeing other forum members' travel capsules.

Joy -- Wow! So even Boulder is getting extended summer. Who would have thought? Good idea to use this time to style your button down tops. We finally got our true fall here in Connecticut after record highs just last week (so weird)... so I have to get moving on taking out my cold weather stuff.

Suz -- So sorry you are still under the weather. Rest up and take care of YOU. I adore your new pink blazer! I bet the color is fabulous on you. Looking forward to seeing your stylings.

Penny -- Fabulous idea to "wear the heck" out of your leather jacket while the transitional weather is still with us. The window of opportunity for wearing those items seems far too short. Bet the jacket looks great over your dresses.

Bonnie -- Now I am curious -- what fab handbag are you eyeing? (I, too, am a bit of a "bag stalker" and wait until the price is right.) Congrats on your multiple styling successes. It is terrific that you were able to build outfits around previously orphaned items.

Kiwigal/Sally -- Your outlook is so wise: "I just want to pause and see what my needs are, not just the shiny wants". I need to make this my own mantra for the next several months. I want to spend this season enjoying what I already have in my closet.

Brooklyn -- Oh no! Busted zipper? What bad timing. Would definitely be worth a quick run to the tailor to have it replaced -- especially since you have 3 fabulous outfits ready and waiting on your skirt. Part of my own challenge this week is taking two pairs of winter pants to tailor for zipper replacement.

Texstyle -- You folks in the southwest have a truly extended summer -- so you are smart to make whatever tweaks are necessary to get you to the end of the long, hot season. Wishing you success in your search for jeans that are "just right". I retired a few pairs this past year for the same reason... just was not feeling the love.

Barbara Diane -- I am on the same page as you this week -- transitioning my closet to my Fall/Winter stuff. I also have the same problem with closet space. I have been storing a lot of my garments in our basement in Rubbermaid containers. Requires more ironing at the beginning of a season, but it works for now. Have fun with your outfit creation!

bj1111 -- I always consider any reorganization of the underwear and sock drawers to be a major success -- so gold stars for you! (Seems to be the last wardrobe areas that get attended to around here... currently a total disaster.) Leggings and cashmere sounds gloriously cozy! No better ensemble for a cold, soggy day.

One of my personal challenges was to wear my burgundy leather jacket at least a couple of times during the all-too-brief transitional weather, and so far I've worn it to a Patti Smith book chat / music performance and a fall barbecue. Worn open, though, because I'm 35 weeks pregnant, and it was a refreshing addition to my maternity dresses!

I've been sick and still am, so my challenge last week was a tiny one -- just to get my culottes hemmed. I've taken them in but haven't picked up.

This week my challenge is going to be to style and decide on the J. Crew pink flamingo blazer, which is still hanging with tags on in my closet. :)

Everyone says that we are having unseasonably warm weather, so I've not been able to wear leather jackets and such as planned. I hope to finish putting away summer and even old spring things, but have been still wearing sleeveless under toppers. Maybe my challenge this week will be to wear my long-sleeved buttondowns, working to style them for casual days.
El Cee, I will miss these challenges and hope to keep setting some small weekly ones for myself and trying to find my style in a new environment and sea of athletic wear.

I took some time earlier in the week to put together 3 maximal-ish outfits based on the one skirt. Unfortunately when I went to put on the skirt this morning I busted the zipper. There goes that plan for now. Now my next challenge is to get the skirt fixed. I always put off tailoring!

I completed my first two goals, and now still working on wearing more jewelry, lipstick.

I have a couple of summer items I would like to purchase, but am taking a short pause on shopping. It has not really warmed up here yet, and I did a lot of shopping for me between July and early October. I am over budget, and over the number of pieces I purchased for the last two years. In itself this does not matter - I added an expensive coat which was the main reason I went over budget. I have bought more pieces from my designer friend, which has added to the quantity. But I just want to pause and see what my needs are, not just the shiny wants.....

I've been working on my fall/winter wardrobe and trying to figure out what I need. I'm pretty happy with what I have accomplished in the past year and have only two essentials to replace. I'm waiting for a certain handbag to perhaps go on sale, and for my local boutique to let me know that the black pants I like are back in stock. Meanwhile, I styled my new black dress, sweatshirt, and top, and made outfits with two vest orphans. I'm still thinking about what I should do to make my wardrobe stylish with the new directions of wide legs, waist definition, and maximalism in mind.

Progress report from what I posted 2 days ago on week 5 for the balance of week 5 and week 6- I tried to shrink my black pants but no luck. Whatever gave them the ability to shrink back is gone, after 100+ wears each. The question is whether I have enough pants to make it through fall/winter. As those pants could be worn in all settings, I will have to be much more careful about planning which pair I wear, so that the dressier pants are available when I need them. I also have started washing the clothes for consignment.

Updated goals:
1. to continue to wash, and then take to consignment, the clothes to consign.
2. to put away my spring/summer clothes. I pulled most of them out of my closet yesterday. I'm not sure where to put them as DS1 is back in his old room 2 nights a week.
Of course, after heavy rain and gray skies, it is warmer than expected here today.
3. Maybe this week, maybe next, to spend some more time making outfits.

I would love to keep this going. It does help me make progress.
Thank you so much El Cee.

Fall is still in the future here but that's typical for us. Since I really don't need to add much to my F/W wardrobe, I'm trying to focus on tweaks to a few clothing items that aren't quite right - in an effort to enjoy what I have for the still hot weather.

And I'm also trying to replace a couple pair of jeans with something better as they were bought in a hurry last year and this year I'm not feeling them.

Finally "true Fall" here. (Yay!!!) My main goal for this week is to pack up the remainder of my warm weather clothing and pull out my cool weather garments. Additionally, I want to take the next couple of weeks to assess my Fall wardrobe and see what is working and what is not, and what pieces may need to be replaced. I already anticipate that I will need to make a couple of footwear purchases (boots/booties), so I will be doing some online "looking".
