Re: How to satisfy the desire for something new yet within limits --

Maybe Shedev's "5 piece" wardrobe is the solution. Of course this does not mean literally 5 pieces in the wardrobe! What it means is that:

For core essentials -- you replace these as needed.

Each main season you choose up to FIVE new "statement" items or trend items to add to the closet.

How you define "core essentials" or season or statement is probably up to you -- Shedev outlined how the originators of this technique conceived of them but she has made small adjustments to suit her own lifestyle and needs and I would probably do the same.

Sterling, your comments are thought provoking. How to satisfy the desire for something new but within a comfort zone. I too buy more of the same or something I've seen on others that is not really me. Can I wear this tomorrow question would help with buying out of season or for a fantasy life. But it might result in things that are too safe, too much like what I already have, just a newer one! Thanks for giving me something to think about...

Hi Joy -- I read some blog that posed the following question: Can I wear this tomorrow? It was a radical thought for me. Before purchasing anything, I ask myself if I can wear it tomorrow? Do I want to wear it tomorrow? Usually the answer is yes.

I was at the mall yesterday and I had to REALLY STEEL myself against all the sales. I forced myself to not even bother looking. Sales will always be my undoing.

Sterling, your comments resonated with me too, especially the temptation of sales, wanting to update to stay current, events and just plain wanting something new. It is so tempting now to buy for next spring/summer on sale, especially wide bottoms which I don't have, but will I love them in April?

Barbara Diane -- It is a lot of work to get clothes ready for consignment, but I am sure your efforts will pay off. (I often get too lazy to press up items and end up just bringing them to Goodwill.) So nice that you could pass along garments to a good friend as you know they will be loved and worn.

Sterling -- I think it is very wise to attempt to understand your own buying habits and what may be leading to the churn you are experiencing. All of your reasons make a lot of sense. For me, I know the major reason I have a lot of wardrobe churn is boredom and desire for change in some facet of my life. What it comes down to is this -- my life is very happy but rather predictable and staid. I shake things up a bit by tweaking my hairstyle and my wardrobe... so there is just going to be some churn in this area. Change can be good.

During Week 4 of the Challenge, I wrote the following:

Evidently, I buy new clothes throughout the year with the idea of refreshing my wardrobe. What happens when I transition my wardrobe is that the pieces that have been stored away for half a year seem stale to me. I have since bought things that are in the same clothing category to refresh my wardrobe and those things seem so much more appropriate. They certainly make me happier. And they are part of the continuing style journey.

So my wardrobe is actually in constant flex. I add to it every single month. I will never be completely satisfied or completely finished.

Having had a week to ponder that statement, and after having read some blogs on sustainability, I want to update my challenge. I have a high degree of wardrobe churn. Some churn made sense. After having found YLF, I used the collective wisdom of the Forum to re-work my wardrobe. But there comes a point when churn is just churn.

So how do I explain the current churn? I profess to being thrilled with my wardrobe and I am. For the remainder of the challenge, I am going to attempt to define why I churn. I will develop of list of reasons and next week I will attempt to find solutions to rehabilitate myself.

REASONS

Weight fluctuations. Even five pounds can mean the difference in one size (especially for slacks, jeans, and skirts). At one time in my life, I had garments that spanned three full sizes. I have long ago donated the pieces that did not me any longer.

Sales. I have a hard time resisting a sale. I buy because the price is too good to be believed. I mean I have to buy it, don't I?

Peer Pressure. I see someone wearing something that looks gorgeous on them, but really does not and will never work for me (e.g., dresses, tunics). Yet, I am seduced by how good that dress looks on them and I start to wonder about it for myself.

Marketing Pressure. Intense. Of course, I want to stay relevant and current. The words "dated" and "frumpy" strike fear in my soul.

Reward. If I have had a hard week or achieved a really tough goal, I automatically "reward" myself with something special (usually involving leather goods).

I Just Plain Want Something New. I think boredom causes a desire for something new and interesting.

Event. A special event looms and nothing in my closet feels appropriate.

Given the timing, I'll put out my challenges for tomorrow and the next week.
1. try and shrink at least one pair of my black pants. I've worn them a million times, but they aren't bouncing back anymore.
2. wash my clothes so I can consign them
3. take said clothes to consignment. It is supposed to rain this week, so hopefully they will take the items now.

My college roommate visited. I had pulled out a jacket for her to try that I kept thinking I should like and hadn't been able to let go of, and she liked it. And she spied another item in my to consign pile and it went home with her also. Made me very happy to see her so happy. And then she had me try on her jacket, which I loved, and I immediately ordered one for myself. It was amazing that it fit so perfectly, was so comfortable, and it will upgrade many outfits. At a store I usually have to try on a huge number of items to find one I like, so it was nice it was so very easy.

Brooklyn and Kiwigal/Sally -- I think that interesting prints and fun jewelry will be a fabulous way to add some maximal style in warm weather. Let us know what works for you. I have an inkling that the maximalist trend may still be around come our hemisphere's Spring/Summer season. Your ideas will be helpful.

Jenn -- I live in Connecticut. No snow here. (I am a snow bunny and love winter weather.) But the temps are dropping a bit. No 80's this week. Perhaps I can safely pack up my summer stuff and start adding toppers. Yay!!! Like you, I am so ready for "true fall".

About the ponchos -- I added a bunch to my collection last year during the big poncho craze... mostly end of season at sale prices. I have always loved them as a transitional weather wrap. So easy to quickly pull off and stick in a tote bag. Plus, I do have a bit of a boho side to my style persona. The ponchos are really fun to wear with my full length flares this time of year.

El Cee - Your topper collection is amazing! I'm envious! Are you in the part of the NE that's getting snow this week? If so, I'm envious of that, too. We're supposed to be back into the upper 70s all next week and I'm ready for true fall. At least I got a taste of cooler weather in Seattle last weekend... and there's always mornings and evenings.

Carter - You were so brave to try the shrinking project. Glad it worked out for you!

Cerinda - I think all your outfits are great! My favorite is #2, though. To answer your question about the signature items: I decided when I bought them. I've been been doing the "5-Piece French Wardrobe" for a few seasons, which limits me to 5 items each season (10 each year), which are either statement pieces, especially trendy items, or over my spending limit for basics. Everything else I buy is meant to be a neutral base to work with those statements.

El Cee and Cerinda, I have no idea whether I will be up to the challenge of summer maximalism. I am thinking lots of prints and jewellery. I would say lots of colour but alas I am not a great colour mixer. Maybe I will go with big hair :)
Sterling, I am not a huge fan of summer fashion but I am actually feeling ready for some warm weather gear now. Ask me again in 3 months, he he.

Suz -- Sorry you are not feeling well. Hope you bounce back soon. Rest up and do not sweat the challenge thing. Taking stuff to the tailor is time and energy consuming enough. Congrats on another successful travel capsule. I think you deserve extra credit -- I personally find it harder to pack for a trip that is "strictly casual" as opposed to one that includes "business casual" elements.

Sterling -- Oh boy, do I hear you on that subject! I am sure I am not alone in saying that I am sick to death of my summer clothes right now and longing for cozy layers. Perhaps we should all head for that chalet in the mountains. Hey Joy -- want a visit? (Wink, wink)

I have to catch up later reading everyone else's -- but wow, can I just say, El Cee, that you have the most amazing poncho collection in the world!?! I hope you get plenty of opportunities to wear them.

I think I missed a week because I was away -- my challenge before that was to prepare a travel capsule that would work for the environment I'd be in -- not terribly challenging, as it happened, since for once I was going to be completely casual the whole trip and the weather was pretty stable. My capsule worked very well.

This week my challenge is going to be taking my culottes for hemming (which I forgot to do when I took my daughter's pants for hemming this morning -- OY!!)

It's a small thing but I will then be able to wear them and this week I'm sick so small and do-able is the name of the game.

Joy -- I loved your WIW's that you posted on last week's thread. You did a bang up job of adapting your outfits for the uncooperative weather. I particularly adore your "maximal trend" ensembles -- fur collars and all. So creative and fun! This challenge thread has been very helpful to me as well... keeps me focused on goals and accountable to someone other than myself. :-)

Elly -- Kudos to you for accomplishing two very big goals. Creating a workable and compact travel capsule takes a lot of forethought. It sounds like your advanced planning in that area was a huge success. Like you, I have been trying to wear my summer clothes in new, interesting combos due to our unexpected extended warm weather. I have been running up against some of the same issues regarding proportions and color combos -- but I think it is good to experiment, even if some outfits do not work as well as others. I think a lot of us are behind in assessing our Fall/Winter clothing -- so hard to do that when the temps are above 80 degrees. Love your new bomber jacket. I can't believe that "Members Only" is a big thing once again. I am old enough to remember that trend from the last time around -- and still love it. Some things just stay fab. :-)

Stylefan -- Yay for you on your recent shopping successes! I look forward to seeing your new wardrobe additions.

Brooklyn -- Love your personal challenge idea -- fits right in with Angie's recent posts regarding the trend toward maximalism. I am looking forward to hearing how you work this trend into your Spring/Summer outfits. You are so right that maximalism can be tricky in the hot weather months.

Jenn -- Your outfits are, as always, totally fab... even minus your signature hat and leather jacket. I love how you have repurposed your poncho as a big scarf. I am going to steal that idea come winter. ;-)

Kiwigal/Sally -- Congrats on creating a successful travel capsule. It is great that you will now have a workable base for future trips. Packing for travel can be so stressful without this type of advance planning.

My Challenge was to work on my shopping list for fall and autumn 2016. I had managed to get through September without spending any money on clothes. I had some ideas about what I needed but I had not committed myself yet. I knew I needed footwear and I was thinking cashmere chunky waist length cardigan. I had a few other things on my list.
Then DH had the idea to go to something near Mississauga for a few days. This meant I would actually be near some B & M shopping. I had 1.5 days of shopping. So I bought a pair of shoes and a cardigan. I will be posting about this soon.

I haven't been back to the thread to post since I posted my 3 challenges during week 2. I was traveling for just over a week and then my partner turned right around and took off yesterday! I think I'm finally caught up.

Challenge 1 was to pack for my 6 day trip to Colorado in my personal item. I used a small backpack and managed to take (including what I was wearing) 3 pants, 2 shoes, 2 light jackets, 5 tops, undies and socks, a couple small gifts, my knitting, and my camera. I did laundry a couple of times and it was a nice trip, although I didn't have much variety! I drove home and snuck in some souvenir yarn and a new piece of gear I was gifted. I stopped at Nordies on the way home and got my yearly bra fitting done.

Challenge 2 was to wear my summer clothes in October in new combinations. So far, so good on this. This has been an effort, but a great exercise. I started by putting together some capsules using the finds tools and I've since tried many of them out. There were quite a few combos that fell flat because of a lack of attention to proportions or because two colors didn't mesh as well in real life. I've nearly forgotten how warm a scarf keeps me, but it still feels odd wearing one with my summer clothes. There have also been some pleasant discoveries too. I'm really enjoying wearing my two tunics over a pair of cropped jeggings with a long cardi and look forward to continuing to wear tunics over ponte pants and the jeggings this fall. The challenge has also driven home the need for a black jacket! Since it is still so warm I am going to continue working through my combinations and hope to get a better feel for my spring/summer clothes.

Challenge 3 is the one I haven't gotten to. I still plan to pull out my fall things and try to get excited by combining things in fresh ways. I want to get lots of use out of my bootcut pants, denim skirt, winter dress, and cropped pants with booties. I'm feeling a little more maximal that normal, too. I've done my fall shopping using gift cards I'd been saving from Christmas and other occasions. I'm currently trying out a bomber to see if it solves my black jacket issue and am replacing a hoodie and two tops that I've worn out. I'd really like a more casual dress to play with, but that probably will have to wait. I also have to figure out if attending a close friend's wedding in January is in the budget, and if so, how to make something from my closet work for that!

I empathize with those with uncooperative weather. This week's warm-ups meant more clothing changes than I would like, and not many opportunities to wear jackets or any topper.
I hope to continue to work on wearing my light weight toppers in the coming week and to work on maximizing outfits. It feels like time to move from giving summer things their last outing.
ElCee, thank you for this challenge. I find that it helps to set goals even if for only a week. I have put off buying new items to refresh but now see some wardrobe holes and want to challenge myself to at least do some shopping this week, hopefully buying something to move me toward new silhouettes.

I had a successful wardrobe capsule on my vacation and wore all my clothing at least once. My least worn item was my white gear jacket but it was worn on a hike until I warmed up. My most worn item was my pair of black floral shorts (three days). We ate out three times (once very casual, twice slightly more dressy). I used all five pairs of shoes and would have struggled to get rid of any of them. I will use this capsule as a base for further trips away.

My wardrobe is sorted and tidied now. I have removed a few pieces (minimal - about three items). I am taking a small halt on shopping- I have a list for a few pieces I want but I am just going to see how things pan out given I may be working more from the office and less from home.

I have been wearing jewelry more - I am still working on this though.

I will chime back in again later - I need to meet a work deadline.

El Cee, you have a real treasure trove for the transition! Nice. And I'm having the same difficulty with my hacked jeans that you and bj1111 both report. We're fully into what passes for fall around here now.

Congratulation on a successful purge and creative re-use, Carter.

Few things matter to me as much as good walking shoes; glad you've got yours, texstyle. It will be interesting to see how you move toward more structure.

Chris987, great going. Keep us posted: who doesn't love revelations?

Still working on wearing my signature pieces whenever I go out.

The items (bold were worn this week):
* Frye oxfords
* rust duster sweater
* gold-toe boots
* wool Panama hat
* embroidered button-down
* silk kimono
* plaid dress
* EF poncho
* leather jacket
* fur vest (new!)
* TBD (this season's items)

I was traveling for 4/7 days this week, so working with a small capsule. Still managed to get wears in on five of the signature items! Sadly, the wool hat and leather jacket didn't come with me on my trip, as they weren't practical for the windy, wet forecast. They would have fit right in otherwise.

I'll be back to comment. :)

Carter -- Wow! 65 items... that is a great purge. It must feel freeing to have moved them out of your closet. You look amazing in the giraffe top. I love that outfit!!! What a great idea to shrink the tunics... a marvelous save on your part. Smart lady!

Texstyle -- Digging those boots -- so fab! (I understand the swoon.) Glad they are working so well for your lifestyle. I so agree with you that it is difficult and downright uncomfortable to wear fitted/structured garments in the hot weather. Like you, I feel more polished and dressed when I wear items with more structure. I will be curious to see what solutions you come up with in this particular challenge. I learn a lot from you wise ladies.

Chris987 -- Kudos to you for reaching the halfway point of your very smart challenge. I look forward to your next post.

About the ponchos -- yep, I am a bit obsessed and probably needing a 12-step program at this point. But they are so darned convenient for this transitional time of year. I can take them on and off with ease (as needed) and wad them up in my tote bag. Cannot do this with most jackets. I may wear them as big scarves when the weather gets cold (inspired by Jenn!).

bj1111 -- I empathize with you. I very recently went through my own personal hack-a-thon -- inspired by Tanya -- and am still trying to figure out how to "autumnize" these pants without making loads of additional purchases. Yes... it is definitely something about "wrong shoes and leg wear". Perhaps we can collectively figure this out. I will be interested to hear what works for you.

Bonnie -- I love your new wardrobe additions. Very fab! I agree that wide legs can be tough to style. I personally think you did a bang up job with that task... but they are not worth holding on to if they do not feel right. Why struggle when you already have silhouettes that you enjoy wearing?

Cerinda -- Your outfits are amazing. You look super stunning in each one of them. Kudos on your successful closet switch. Sounds like you had a real light-bulb moment regarding your closet orphans... wise conclusions there. I am still in the process of trying to figure that out with respect to my own wardrobe.
