The week was too warm to wear many toppers but I did get to wear the poncho and a quilted vest. I also got distracted by making outfits maximal. Some of my week:

Sterling -- We can run the challenge as long as there is still interest. I was planning on running it at least through the end of October -- but we could certainly take it into November. We have not had full Fall here in Connecticut. The leaves are changing, but it is still supposed to hit 80+ degrees by midweek. Bizarre! I am still wearing mostly summer clothes and adding lightweight toppers in the mornings and after the sun goes down. I have not even taken my Fall/Winter clothes out of storage. So -- yes -- let us continue for at least a few more weeks.

Sally -- I loved your Boho week. I have not had a chance to properly comment on all of your threads (was out of the house most of the week), but I did peek in from time to time. I will be playing catchup tomorrow when I am back to my normal schedule. Ooooh -- would love to see a chino/cargo pants style challenge. Great idea!

I haven’t been on here much this week.
I love that dress and cardigan El Cee.
I also like your poncho Joy.
Great outdoors look Carla. I have shoes similar to that for walKing.
I love the white jeans outfit Bella.
Sorry I couldn't bold everyone's name as I'm on my phone. So much to catch up with.
I did my boho pinterest outfits. I'm trying to think of another theme to inspire me. I'm thinking of doing a chino/cargo pants collection.

Jenn -- I'm sorry it took me so long to comment on your outfits. I thought I had and I see now that I didn't. I certainly typed something; I must have not have submitted it.

I thought hands down the first one would be my absolute favorite, but then I saw the dress and I was blown away. That dress is so beautiful on you. I love everything about it.

Have you told us how you are capturing your outfits? Is it powerpoint? Or do you have an app. Whatever it is, I want it.

Hi Bella. I love that sweater.

El Cee -- can we do the challenge through the end of October? I need the extra time to get some cool weather down my way.

Sterling -- I think I am on the same page with you as far as having a wardrobe that is always in a state of flux. Some of us just require more change than others in terms of our seasonal style... and I think this is absolutely fine. You are right -- it is how we stay feeling modern and happy. A big Yay from me on the culottes. May you find the perfect pair for your own style needs.

Carter -- You have been in my thoughts. I am so relieved to hear that there was no significant damage to your lovely beach property with the recent hurricane. I so understand your desire to purge, to keep what is most loved and valued, and to let go of some things that do not bring as much joy. But I think you are very wise to bag/store the purged items (or put them into a holding zone) until you are perfectly sure you wish to part with them. We are going through a similar process here in our household.

Clementine -- I like your challenge for the week. "Into Mind" is an interesting website and I have often contemplated the idea of having a more curated wardrobe. I will be very interested to hear how the book influences your decisions in this area.

Bonnie -- I understand your concerns about the new wide leg pants/jeans trend... although I really loved how you styled them in your recent thread. Long over lean has been my own personal favorite fallback silhouette for a while now. It is very flattering on a lot of us. I have just started embracing wide legs and culottes. It took a lot of effort to find stylings that I like. My longer tunics do not work well with this type of bottom -- but I still had a few shorter (more cropped) tops in my closet and found they pair nicely with the new silhouette. I do not intend to give up "long over lean", but I enjoy having other options.

Bella -- I agree that outfits often look better "in motion" than they do in still photos, so I am sure that your outfit looked much different in your real life wearing. I personally do not like taking "What I Wore" photos as I cannot seem to capture the true essence of my outfit with a mirror shot. I like your idea of using a spreadsheet as an alternative way of tracking your own outfits and noting your personal favorites.

Sorry it has taken me a few days to come back to comment. I have been offline for most of the week. Wow! Still amazed and inspired by everyone's challenges. Thanks for your comments and participation.

Jenn -- I am immensely enjoying following your challenge and am amazed by your outfit and ensemble pics. It is like looking through a fabulous fashion catalog. I particularly love your ensembles with the furry vest. I also like how you have autumnized your plaid dress. You are giving me a lot of great ideas to use with my own wardrobe.

Joy -- I like both of the toppers you showed here and think either would work well with this outfit. Which one did you end up choosing?

Stylefan -- Congrats on finishing your wardrobe audit. I have been learning a lot from your audit threads. That was a huge undertaking and you certainly deserve a break. Also -- kudos to you for sticking to your plan not to buy any clothing last month. I am attempting something similar for October. I do not want to make any purchases until my Fall/Winter stuff is fully out and evaluated.

Kerlyn -- You are a wise woman to get wear from the pieces you love and not to "save" them. (That is a bad habit that I have.) The floral blouse sounds lovely. Glad you are enjoying the heck out of it.

I just bought the new book by the woman who does IntoMind. I'm hoping it will help me get my arms around my wardrobe plan (or lack thereof!) a bit better. My goal for the next week is to get through the first chapter or two with some thought and work, ie., not just reading the words, but processing how it may apply to me.

Thank you, Sterling and Elizabeth.

I was thinking about my post above as I was running errands today. I used the word "unimportant". That's not the right word. I don't even have the truly important items at the beach (family photos, kids' mementos, etc). Nor do I have anything hugely valuable there (artwork, jewelry, etc). What I do have there is stuff that just "works". The "right stuff", if you will. Not placeholders. Nothing that isn't used regularly. Nothing I'm looking to upgrade later (with rare exception).

So, in this urge to purge, it's not the "unimportant" that needs to go. It's the things that aren't beautiful to me, useful to me, or the "right" things to meet my needs. I'm not becoming a minimalist;-). I'm simply getting rid of debris I didn't really see before.

Joy, I love that poncho! Your whole outfit is fab. And is that the black/silver knit EF tank that I have been admiring on eBay? Swoon....

Bonnie, I'm sorry you are going to return your denim culottes, as I quite liked how they looked on you. but I admire you for recognizing that maybe the aren't "you", style wise, before it's too late.

Sterling, great that you learned that about yourself, and that it has
freed you. I'm afraid I have terrible "waste" guilt... it doesn't stop
me purchasing, just purging. Which is just stupid.

Carter, I'm so glad to hear that your house survived Matthew. I was wondering, especially as we have a bunch of devastation here due to the tail end of it, I can only imagine what you experienced. I am also very inspired by your "wear more often" spreadsheet. I may start one of those as well. I love stylebook for recording, but it's not as "in your face" as this is. Also very interesting to learn about your desire to simplify because of your recent experience. I think that's a common occurrence.

Way to go, rest of you! I love reading how you are doing, and am learning something from each and every one of you.

I don't think I've been on YLF all week, so I have lots of catching up to do. I'm looking forward to reading about all of your challenges!

Sorry to go off-topic for a minute...

We were planning to move our things into the beach house today. Unfortunately, I had to put everything on hold last week as Hurricane Matthew planned it's route. The island was terribly hard hit. 1000s of trees down. Some areas still don't have power. Many areas were under water by 3-4 feet. Water and sewer are still not operational on the island and most businesses remain closed until further notice.

We were extremely lucky. We heard yesterday that we had no significant damage in the the midst of all the destruction around us.

In the middle of this roller coaster, I'm feeling the urge to purge the unimportant. I've been purging all year throughout my house, but I suddenly feel that I've only scratched the surface, and the excess really needs to go. We have very few items at the beach currently, but what I learned this past week was that the items we do have there have been chosen very carefully. In the event we had lost everything in the hurricane, I would have replaced most everything with the same exact item (or as close as humanly possible) as what was lost. On the other hand, there are VERY FEW items in the Atlanta house that I would want to replace exactly.

So...all this leads to my wardrobe. It's time for a very deep and wide purge. In fact, I think it may be so severe that I will keep things bagged up but accessible for a bit to see if this feeling sticks;-) My challenge for the next couple weeks or so is to see where this takes me.

In the meantime, this week I managed to add 3 more checkmarks on my "wear these more often" list. I like this challenge, and it will continue during the cooler season. Tracking chart below.

One more thing...as I start thinking about switching my closet over to F/W in a few weeks, I need to remember my climate (thanks, Sterling!). The picture below was in one of the island newsletters. Although I might argue that with temps still hovering in the high 80s, Summer lasts a bit longer than the pie chart shows;-)

As always, I learn a ton of stuff from these challenges, both personally and from others that are kind enough to share their experience. Sometimes I learn about "unintended consequences."

It has to do with "refreshing my wardrobe." Evidently, I buy new clothes throughout the year with the idea of refreshing my wardrobe. What happens when I transition my wardrobe is that the pieces that have been stored away for half a year seem stale to me. I have since bought things that are in the same clothing category to refresh my wardrobe and those things seem so much more appropriate. They certainly make me happier. And they are part of the continuing style journey.

So my wardrobe is actually in constant flex. I add to it every single month. I will never be completely satisfied or completely finished.

I don't consider this to be a bad thing at all. But it does explain why when I transition from season to season I wonder "why did I keep that?" I think I need to own this truth and plan around it. Yes. I am one of those women that turns over her entire wardrobe every few years. Environmentally, this might be bad and I do feel a bit of embarrassment, but this flux is my way of staying modern and happy in life. I'm going to own it.

I may not have jumped all over the culotte thing, but my eye has adjusted to the look and I have learned to really like them. This means I'll be adding an experimental pair to my wardrobe soon. As I add new pieces, I will fall out of love with old pieces. It is inevitable with me. The old pieces will feel ... well, not modern.

This new piece of information is quite "freeing." No longer will I do mental somersaults trying to make myself want to wear something from last year when the shine has worn off. And furthermore it is impetus to wear the heck out of whatever I buy this season. No more saving!!!!

I am posting this from my phone as a placeholder. I will come back and comment on my laptop later.

ETA: Sorry! I posted this and promptly forgot about it as it was a very busy day at work.

My challenge this week was to take pictures of my outfits. I did manage to take one (1!) outfit picture, and I am not very happy with the result. In fact, I was happy with my outfit that day, but then I looked at the pictures when I came home that night to discover that my pants did this weird bunching thing. I am almost positive that they don't do this in real life, but still it was a bummer to find out! I have to double check next time I wear these pants..

Now, my primary reason for wanting to take outfit pictures was to take note of my favorite ones. This week has once again shown me that this is not possible. So as a second best alternative, I started to keep record in an excel sheet. It is not perfect, but at least it will help me remember some of my favorite getups and allow me to find some FFBs in a pinch.

I haven't thought about my challenge for next week yet.

Ok, off to read others' responses.

My challenge was to find pants for my new boots and try them with what I have in my closet. I tried Anthro's Pilcro wide leg pants with my new boots and showed them to DH who was waiting for me (and reading) on the store's sofa. Two ladies who were sharing the sofa with DH loved the pants on me and convinced me to buy them. I spent the week trying to find tops and toppers in my wardrobe that worked. I shared my photos on the forum and got lots of great feedback and advice. I'm thinking of returning them because they may be too challenging for me. I still love long over lean and think I should wait until the new silhouette becomes more mainstream.

Fun to read all your challenges! Very inspiring! My challenge was to really wear my new pieces as well as my favorites, rather than "saving" them. And I've been doing just that! I was worried I wouldn't have many opportunities to wear the dark floral blouse I bought a month ago, but our fairly warm fall weather has allowed me to wear it 4 -5 times already! I've also worn the lightweight pullover sweaters I picked up several times each. Another lovely blouse that I thought might have to wait for spring was worn the other night for our anniversary dinner since the weather turned out to be beautiful. But knowing the weather would cool down quickly while we were at dinner, I brought along a new faux leather moto jacket that had been collecting dust in my closet (a steal last spring with rewards points!). It worked out perfectly! It's been fun to break out of my comfort zone a bit.

I am impressed with how well everyone is doing with their challenges. I had set a personal challenge to not buy any clothing for the month of September and I manage to do that. And I have not purchased any clothing in October. That is sort of related to the personal style challenge.
I have finished my wardrobe audit. I am taking a mini break. My next step with be to plan what I will purchase for the next year. I have some ideas but I hope to post this shopping plan this coming week.
Jenn I love your signature items. Great idea to have that in your style. Has got me thinking about my signature items.
Good idea to wear your leather jackets Elizabeth. The season to wear my is so short. I need to remember that and start wearing them.
Chris I have been struggling with finding my style for my new real life. I am looking forward to hearing about yours.
Sterling transition pieces are a good idea. I think I wear mine more than I think.
Suz you pack so well. Start with shoes. I need to remember this.
Carla I like your outfit without the bling.
Joy and El Cee I agree with you. Wear the poncho when you can.

I have lots of outfits and lots of photos this week! I think this might be the first time I managed to get pictures of every outfit. My challenge has been to regularly wear the signature items I've added to my closet over the past few seasons.

The items (bold were worn this week):
* Frye oxfords
* rust duster sweater
* gold-toe boots
* wool Panama hat
* embroidered button-down
* silk kimono
* plaid dress
* EF poncho
* leather jacket
* fur vest (new!)
* TBD (this season's items)

This week's outfits:
Photo 1: Outfit includes Panama hat and gold-toe boots
Photo 2: (mountain trip) Outfit includes fur vest and gold-toe boots
Photo 3: (mountain trip) Outfit includes fur vest and gold-toe boots
Photo 4: Outfit includes Frye oxfords
Photo 5: Outfit includes plaid dress

Some of my signature items definitely get more wear than others, so I'm going to try to take a different set on my next upcoming mini-vacation.

I'm loving all the transitional weather outfits, because I feel like those clothes are my life 3/4 of the year.

El Cee, it's exciting to think that you could be using more of your summer dresses year-round. What a discovery! Your staycation sounds wonderful. We've been doing multiple mini-vacations this year, and it's definitely fun to play tourist in your own neck of the woods.

Suz, I'm looking forward to seeing your writer's retreat outfits, as I suspect those will really represent the kinds of things I'd like to wear in real life. You really have to straddle the line between "comfortable for long periods of work" and "professionally presentable."

Elizabeth, I'm with you on leather jacket season!

Sterling, it's definitely another layer of challenge when the weather forecast a week out doesn't necessarily hold for any given day, isn't it?

Chris, that sounds like a great challenge, and is something I struggle with too. Sometimes, I almost wish I had an office job!

Runcarla, enjoy your staycation!

You ladies are rocking your challenges!

Joy -- Looks like you and I are experiencing similar weather patterns. You are right that ponchos and certain jackets do not layer well under most coats. We should wear the heck out of them while we can. :-)

Runcarla -- We have had a bit of extended summer here as well -- and I have been dressing in a similar fashion to what you describe. Dressing for this transitional weather is a challenge in itself. Sounds as if you are adapting well. Enjoy your staycation! Gosh -- even your "grubby chore" outfit is so cute and stylish. No bling needed.

Suz -- Enjoy your retreat. I will be interested to hear how your travel capsule worked out. I am on the same page as you and Runcarla for the upcoming weeks. Love the extended warmth, but I so want to be more seasonally appropriate.

Sterling -- You are so smart to wear the heck out of those transitional pieces. I am trying to do the same. I want no orphans this season. :-)

Chris987 -- That is a fabulous challenge. I sometimes find it tough to feel stylish on the days that I am working from home or just puttering around the house. I think you are right that putting together simple, sporty ensembles may be the key.

ElizabethP -- You are right that those dressier crop flares are tricky... especially moving into cooler weather. (I never seem to have the right footwear. It was so much easier to style these in the summer.) I will be interested to see what stylings you come up with for these pants. I will be joining you this weekend in packing up the remainder of my "true" summer things.

Thanks El Cee!!

I will continue with my challenge to make sure I take advantage of this transitional weather to wear things that are best suited to bare legs or "sliver of skin". This includes spending some time this weekend to figure out how to wear my crop flares... I'm wearing them today, but struggled a bit with proportions this morning. Funny, I had NO issue with cropped jeans, but the dressier version seems to be a bit tougher for me.

I also want to make sure I wear my leather jackets whenever I can.

I will likely do some packing away of true summer things this weekend, and need to do some soul searching... if I have time :)

Carla, I love your "formula sans bling".

Suz, I always love your travel capsules, they always seem bigger than they really are because you pack variety. So I hope you'll share!

I've been loving this series of challenges (thanks El Cee!) and am ready to do one of my own. Mine will be a two-week challenge to wear outfits for my real life. I will incorporate a few new things but mostly this will be stuff from my closet. I'm trying to find a balance between my casual real life and my desire to be stylish, and this challenge will help me assess where I am on this journey. Part of it will to be very realistic about the days I do stuff only at home and wear very simple sporty clothes.

You've done really well with this challenge, El Cee. It's interesting to hear what you've learned in the process.

I'm on a writing retreat this week so won't be on the forum much. My challenge was to come up with a travel capsule. I managed to pack what I hope is an appropriate array of options but I won't know for sure until the week goes on. I'll report next week!

The challenge then will be to transition to more fall-like outfits. As Carla said, we had summery weather into the early fall so I haven't really adjusted to the autumn closet.

Last month I put together a transitional/fall capsule. Summer-like weather has stretched into fall, so I have leaned more heavily on lighter weight tops (the pussy-bow button downs) vs the sweaters, and the white jeans and yellow crops. The third layer tops (leather bomber, wool jacket, and duster coat) are too warm, but the cool mornings and Commuter train A/C require something. A dark wash jean jacket knocks some of the sweetness out of the lady-like tops.

No outfit pictures. It is dark in the am when I leave, and pm when I get home and the flash on my devices doesn't pierce the gloom well enough for good resolution.

The take away is that I'm happy working from the closet, and find no need to shop for the next new thing!

PS I'm on a staycation this week as well, but grubby chores = Angie's Friday formula sans bling!

You have done a great job with your challenge. I like your staycation challenge and will also try to use my mid weight toppers, especially jackets and ponchos that do not layer well under coats when it turns colder. They need to be worn now.
