I am coming very late to this thread, but I have been thinking it over for a few days and thought you might like some suggestions for youngish children (I have girls, 3, 5 and 8)

Some of the best presents for them have included, or could include
-craft staff - eg felt shapes, sequins, feathers, popsticks and especially appreciated quite mundane supplies - sticky tape (even better if it is in a dispenser) wood glue ( by girls use this like it is going out of fashion, paints and sketch books
- audio books with long running times (great for car trips)
-bathing suits (I know my MIL is giving this to my girls)
-board games (if possible, of sturdy variety)
- leggings, stockings, socks, headbands, hairclips/ hair elastics - hard to have too many of these
- a trip to the circus or a kids theatre production or the movies or to a vacation art/ cooking etc workshop

Of the amazing suggestions made above , I particularly liked magazines and events. Once year my family clubbed together to give me a day long seminar run by University Extension on Jane Austen (we even ate food from the era) Once of my best presents ever!

I love a lot of these ideas! I never thought to give a certificate for a class, but I think its brilliant. I think of all the fun classes I have thought about taking over the years but never did due to lack of funds, or feeling too busy, etc. Having someone buy me a class would definitely make me carve out the time.

These days I generally try to give either homemade items or "experiences." If I do give a purchased item I try to find something that will last or be useful for a long time. If I had enough funds, these are the items I would buy for my family and close friends:

For someone who is frequently cold:
1. Gift certificate for custom pashmina scarf. Good for anyone who loves color (I seriously spent happy HOURS thinking about the different colors I could order.) I generally find wool itchy, but the pashmina is very soft. I like this vendor because A. They seem to be fair-trade (though I haven’t investigated as much as I should.) B. They delivered exactly what I ordered, on time, and it was really cool to get a package from Nepal, and C. They usually throw in an extra gift like a small silk bag. http://www.sunrise-pashmina.com/color.html

2. Alpaca throw. Again, crazy soft and often comes beautiful colors. Not cheap, but definitely a well-used and appreciated item. Good for a frequently cold person who doesn’t like heavy layers.

For someone who likes to read:
1.	Nicely bound version of a classic in that person’s favorite genre. For example, for someone who loves mysteries, I might buy a vintage hardcover of Dashiell Hammet’s The Maltese Falcon. I have been able to find vintage books online for $25 or less.
2.	Wall art based on the person’s favorite book. Especially nice for kids or adolescents who are into reading.

For someone who likes or is even just interested in a specific hobby:
1.	Subscription to relevant specialty magazine. I am amazed by the huge variety of magazines published on very niche topics. For example, last I looked, there were over 15 different magazines focused on woodworking. Even if someone doesn’t have the time or money to spend on the hobby, sometimes just getting a monthly or quarterly chance to read articles and look at photos can be very satisfying. (That certainly is how I feel about home décor.)

For someone who is interested in history, art, or unique jewelry:
Museum stores. The SF MOMA and the MET are reliable choices, but there is a lot of great stuff at smaller museums, as well. For example, look at these baskets from the Cleveland museum of art: http://store.cmastore.org/afecwiba.html I love those! Another item I love, from the V&A http://www.vandashop.com/produ.....;navlock=1

Here is another way of gifting. Many of my relatives are cash-short yet stuff-rich. We each bring a wrapped 're-gift' to our holiday get together then draw numbers and pick and trade from the pile. It is a lot of fun, and there is no anxiety about choosing the perfect gift.

Me & DH each buy ourselves something nice, wrap each other's gift up, then look pleased and surprised when we unwrap them. Works for us ;-).

LIke Joy my list has shrunk in the last few years. I buy for my mom and her husband, my brother's daughter (we stopped exchanging when we each had children), DH, DC, MIL and SIL. I usually buy something for my uncle but he's quite difficult since he has everything. I will say the best received gift I have ever given was a porcelain ornament with a B&W photo of my grandparent's on their wedding day given to my Uncle. He raves about it every year and has a special ceremony to put it on the tree. I've made my tradition to get these ornaments made with our Christmas photo each year and hang them on a special tree.
DH asked what I wanted and I really want the basement fixed, a new screen door and tires for my car. Not very romantic, but quite practical. I'll probably get perfume, pajamas and a piece of jewelry.

There are some really good ideas on this thread!

Amy - consider yourself adopted.
Elly - thank you for the tip about the Jack Purcell Converse - I just have the regular flat kind. I'll definitely investigate the cushier ones you've mentioned.
Alicat - the list I wrote was what I'd like to do...we'll see if I can actually do some of them.

Actually, writing it out like that has helped me clarify - because Heather said 'dream big' - I got some ideas going. Yay!

I think cashmere socks are a great idea for a friend who lives in Boston- can anyone recommend a brand?

I'm feeling a bit lost with gift shopping this year. The only things on my list so far are:

* a tea tumbler for my Mom
* a fancy umbrella for my sister- http://www.shoebedoo.com.au/sh.....andy-Pink/ I have a black one and it's so beautiful. People stop me on the street and tell me that my umbrella is gorgeous- even men)
* a meat thermometer for my boyfriend (he loves to cook and I usually get him some kind of kitchen gadget + a few other bits and pieces

The other gifts I have to buy are:
* A family secret santa gift- I drew my cousin who is 26
* my other sister who is 22 and lives a state away
* my Dad- single, into cooking, hates buying clothes so quick likes to be bought them.

Oh-- velvety Chocolate! I'd highly recommend looking into a pair of Converse Jack Purcells for your mother-- they have two versions, but they have a more cushy athletic sole type insole that is removable and might work better with the brace( they can be a tiny bit more roomy than converse as well-- I have better lucky with orthotics and the like in them and find them more comfortable-- and I wore All Stars for years).

Oh-- this was actually pretty easy. In the last few years my Christmas list has plummeted as family members have asked to stop exchanging gifts (my aunts and cousins), others have passed away (my grandfather and most of my great aunts and uncles and several of our friends of the family), my engagement broke up (and he got custody of our best friend), and this year several of my oldest, closest friends have chosen not to exchange gifts because they are saving for trips.

My list includes:

My YLF secret santa! This one is a secret! Woohoo!

My mother and father-- My mom is hard to shop for. She never buys nice things for herself, but at the same time she is very picky. Last year it was silver earrings and vanilla perfume, which she actually liked. This year I would like to get her and my father a session or two with a financial planner to talk about retirement investment or a book and/or class for my mom about freelancing because she is considering a career change. If I go that road, I'll probably buy clothes or CDs (or MP3s) to burn for my father. He has a lot of awesome hobbies, but he never uses or enjoys anything I buy him except clothes and music. Plus, me and a couple other people are saving to buy either plane tickets/a new mattress/or a new camera for their 25th wedding anniversary in July.

My younger brother-- He is another hard one and much like my dad in that he refuses to uses most non-clothing or music things I buy him. I'm actually considering a gas card since he enjoys spending most his time in the mountains. I'd really like to help him get mentored because he is floundering a bit with what he would like to do career-wise and major wise in college, but I am not sure where to begin there.

My mom's parents-- Music is always a hit here as well. We went on a short trip together this year, so I wouldn't mind buying them some art or crafts that will remind them of the trip, or maybe some framed photos of our trip.

My other grandmother-- She is hard-- I don't even know where to begin. Probably some nice skin products or a gift certificate to the place she goes to get massages.

One of the best gifts I ever gave anyone was a george foreman grill--- I highly recommend them as gifts for people that live alone or a solitary couple and anyone that is trying to eat healthier. You can pick them up on amazon inexpensively. I find older people are particularly enamored with the technology. Nice slippers (shearling) and semi-precious jewelry that is handmade also has been a hint. Electric bed warmers or throw blankets are appreciated in cold locales.

I also have some portraits of my brother that I took that I need to send out. I will probably send photos I've taken of sights in Colorado and cards/letters to a few more friends and some of my mentors.

When it comes to getting gifts, I really appreciate the thought. I have a long list, but would be just tickled if I got one or two of the things.

Medical alert jewelry-- I am still wearing my dimestore stuff. I'd like something a bit more stylish and sleek and maybe a pendant to wear to work since sometimes my bracelet has to come off.

A watch-- I've gotten into the habit of wearing one, but I only have my heart rate watch (which I no longer have to wear all day! yay) and an expensive and dainty dress watch which was a gift from my late grandfather and is too precious to wear everyday. I'd love something that is between the two, more stylish, maybe something boyfriendy?

Earrings-- I have a newish necklace that needs a coordinating pair. Both of my daily basics are close to 10 years old and feel a bit worn and dainty.

A winter hat or two and gloves-- I went all winter with only a polar fleece beanie and a borrowed pair of gloves. I'd also love a fashion scarf or two that I could wear both indoors and out.

A remote shutter release for my camera.

Framing for my diplomas-- is this pretentious? What are you supposed to do with them if you don't frame them?

A Pendleton blanket. I'd really love one, but they tend to be pricey. Where I come from this is a fairly common way to mark a right of passage or show pride in or honor someone. I graduated from school for the second time this year and have never received one-- which is a little unusual for someone my age. Of course, it isn't something you ask for and I doubt my family will remember.

I also have some giftcards that were gifted to me last year to be spent on certain things (a purse, a pair of boots, a MP3 player, ect.) that I am hoping I will be able to use sometime before or after the season when things are on sale.

Bella - I just checked out the JC Penney site ! Great stuff.

Even our Christmas gfts have become traditional.

Christmas is so hard for me because my husband, dad, and son have birthdays around Thanksgiving. Then my mom's is Christmas Eve and my sister is two weeks later !!! That is my entire family except for my daughter ! So I have to come up with double the ideas.

My husband really wants a new treadmill. But he would love a Ben Graham shirt. THAT would be a total extravagance.

My children will get a couple of toys each and an overnight stay at a hotel with a pool ( my son LOVES that ). Probably some clothes.

My sister, who is mentally disabled, LOVES gift cards. Then I take her shopping and she can buy whatever she wants....no strings, unless it clothes ( they have to fit her and be somewhat modest. ) It really makes her feel powerful since so many people make decisions for her otherwise.

For my mom, I will get her some shoes, that she really needs and every year I give her a very large basket filled with enough essentials for 6 months to a year ( she is 76 and has bad arthritis and doesn't go out much ). So I will buy her deodorant, her favorite soap, lotion, blush, a nice blush brush...I'll snoop to see if she has tweezers and so on....

My dad has threatened to not talk to me if I buy him something....he is 80. SO it'll be from the grandchildren.

I would LOVE a David Yurman black diamond necklace. But I will kill my husband if he actually buys it. It is just too extravagant. Otherwise, there is a ring that I would love, but also too expensive. Maybe I will save up for it......

@velvetychocolate - can you adopt me? You're REALLY good at thinking up gift ideas. Thanks for sharing all the suggestions

Ana - there is a 3 TB Western Digital Hard Drive available at Costco (in the warehouse, and not necessarily online) that's a really good deal according to my husband - they were selling out fast at my local warehouse - around $110.

I'm tempted to get my Mom a pair of Converse shoes - she keeps admiring mine whenever I wear them. She has to wear a foot brace on one of her feet, requiring a lace-up shoe with a 'tongue' - and I think the Converse would actually work. She doesn't think so, but I'm convinced they'd work with the foot brace, and that an insole if necessary would help with the fact that these kinds of shoes are pretty flat. I'd get her a grey, denim blue or purple colour I think.

For my husband? He works so hard, has a really intense job, and just loves music. The best thing I could find for him would be tickets to a concert - even better would be if we had to fly somewhere for a day or a weekend to attend such concert. I did this once before, and we had a *great* time. That was about three years ago now, I bought him concert tickets in Austin TX - requiring us to fly from Boulder area to Austin - we stayed in a reasonably cheap motel (laughed our heads off at the decor), but we had a *blast* that weekend. My husband is very hard to buy for (engineer/geek type), and the best things I've bought for him have been 'experiences' more than things. Examples are a weekend away in the mountains, concert tickets requiring us to go away, tickets to museum exhibits and so on. He just doesn't get excited about a new pair of pants or another shirt.

For my uncle? He's recently retired, and I can tell he's bored out of his mind. If I could, I'd buy him a gift certificate to the local college so he could take a course or two, just for fun and interest. It would be ideal if said gift certificate could be used for anything - a course, something at the bookstore, or a concert or whatever he wanted. I'd love to be able to buy such an 'open-ended' gift certificate to the local college for my uncle.

For my aunt? Well, she's also just newly retired (laid off actually, and at 'that age' when it was kind of pointless to look for a new position, her opinion) - she's one who has scrimped and saved all of her life. I'd buy her something luxurious - it might be a real silver makeup mirror to keep in her purse, a nice silk scarf, a gift certificate for a fancy hair salon or something like that. Even an expensive lipstick - she'd be *thrilled* with something like this - something she'd never buy for herself but that would make her feel special and pampered.

My Dad? Hmm....single, and has been for years. Lonely too. Half tempted to get him something like Italian cooking lessons or something like that. Where he'd have to go out and meet people and get out of his comfort zone.

My Grandma? She's approaching a hundred years old and still living in her own house. I've got a few 'large print' romance type novels bookmarked for her. Also - really good tea, and shortbread to complete the care package.

Stepdad? Very successful businessman/entrepreneur. I'm not sure what this would be, but I'd love to get him something that would require him to make something with his hands. Something like a woodworking kit or something along those lines. He's on the phone all the time, does not have to go to the office unless he wants to. Everything's in his head...so something he'd have to make would be kind of neat. Something creative/artistic would be even better. He's an MBA type. Aha! Some sort of art class or a one-day/one-night class where he'd have to actually work with his hands and not just his head.

For my best friend? She's a SAHM with four kids - and she and her husband have a great relationship. Lately though, I can tell that the kids and the whole 'routine' is having a bit of an effect (romance wise). I'd get them a gift certificate to a fancy restaurant, plus money to cover babysitting.

Me? Hmm....I'd like something non-technical, and non-electronic. I have a geek-ish/engineer-ish, very high-tech husband, and ...well, there isn't anything electronic that I want. I'm still trying to figure out how to use the stuff he bought me last year and the year before that. I'd love some nice perfume, or some good chocolate. Funny thing is that I'm not all that technical, and my husband is technical in the extreme. You know what? I would love something like an old fashioned Remington typewriter. Some new bookplates to put into my favourite books. Don't laugh, but I'd be thrilled with an old-fashioned recipe box, or some beautiful stationery and a ...fountain pen. A french press for coffee. A real tea pot - that kind of thing. I'm living with someone who has automated just about everything. The living room lights turn on automatically at a certain time. The plants are watered on time.

I realize I haven't given specific links to specific products, but your post/question made me think about what I'd like to buy and it's very helpful - thanks for asking I have a much better idea of where I'm going with my own holiday shopping as a result.

Looking forward to more replies on this post.

eta: sorry for the novel...wondering if I should delete a good portion of my post - it looks overly long.

For me (giving or getting): It is hard to beat a well-chosen book, whether coffee-table, fiction, or non-fiction. For kids, there are some amazing pop-up books.
For a fashionista, a scarf (with gift receipt) is affordable, easy, welcome (and easily returnable if it doesn't suit). My mom gives me a pair of cashmere socks each year: warm, soft, luxurious. A great photo (or photo-gift now that they are so easy to make) is also one of my mainstay gifts.
We are also big on 'service' coupons in our family: car washes or homemade dinners from my sons, breakfast + NYT in bed, etc.
Finally, tickets or promises to enjoy an event together are fun for giver and recipient, alternatively, give a movie gift card (especially for teens). Most of these are, or can be, very affordable as well as meaningful.

I'm still brainstorming ideas for my husband. He wanted a new hard disk, but then he bought it for himself, so it's back to the drawing board for me. I'll probably get him a kitchen apron and miscellaneous kitchen gadgets for stocking stuffers.
