Janet, there's always a chance we could run into each other...we'll be in Paris from Dec. 27 to Jan 3!

If you have the time and interest, a trip to Vaux Le Vicomte is an easy day trip from the city, and it's simultaneously fabulous and more human than chateaux like Versailles. It also looks amazing in its Christmas finery.

Janet, I know you've already made your decision, but as a Slovenian, I thought I'd toot my country's horn in this topic :)

In terms of geography, Slovenia is nestled between Austria, Italy, Hungary and Croatia and boasts a tiny but worthwhile coastline. It offers great hiking and skiing opportunities and the prices are very affordable.

Sounds like a good plan, I hope you have a great trip. I loved Mont St Michel! Very crowded and touristy, but the place itself and the view made up for that.

We stayed at the Marriott in Vienna using our rewards points. Not the inner city one but the one at the summer palace, Schoenbrunn, a 5 minute subway ride from city centre (this we realized, AFTER pulling all our luggage across the Stadtpark to go to the city one...).

We were there in end January to February so I can vouch for lots of things going on (it is the ball season, for one thing). So in case you have second thoughts... But I suspect it is much like Prague in many ways so Paris will give you a bit of something different. Have a great trip!

Well, we researched and talked and considered, and decided that we only wanted to do one more city during this trip in between Prague and London, rather than try to see too much and spend more time on the road or hopping from one town to another. Since we had such a travel-intensive time on the last visit to Europe, we wanted to stay put a bit longer in one place. We are also trying to limit ourselves to cities with good Marriott reward-accepting properties, available on our travel dates, which narrowed things down as well. We decided to go to Paris, even though we've been there before. It will be less crowded this time, and there is still plenty to see and do that we didn't get to when we were there 7 year ago. We will also take some day trips to Rouen and Mont St Michel and perhaps some other places not far from Paris.

I have, however, taken notes from all your suggestions, so we are ready for another trip soon! Thank you for all the great ideas!

I am actually with Ornella and Astrid on this. All of the suggestions are wonderful and would require at least a few days of overnight stay in order to truly enjoy the city. Besides, I feel like city sight-seeing is always a bit more difficult and tedious in the winter - you have to take frequent breaks in cafes and restaurant in order not to freeze off.
So, my recommendations are smaller cities in the area: Heidelberg, Basel, Strasbourg (very pretty during Christmas as well), Freiburg and even Konstanz ( or Meersburg) - not the sea, but a gorgeous lake.
In any case, sounds like a fabulous trip! Enjoy!

I have no specific advice to offer. We were in Istanbul in February a couple years ago. I was surprised how cold it felt. It was actually cold (it even snowed), but it felt much colder to me because it was so damp. I felt like a popsicle for a couple weeks. So I guess I do have advice: bring warm clothes! I hope you have a wonderful time wherever you go.

A lot of great suggestions! But I also agree with Ornella, you need more time! I personally would pick fewer places and then really enjoy these, with more time at each destination and less travel time, but that's me. How much time do you want to spend in Munich and London? I personally liked Paris, but didn't love it (I've been there three times). Love London. Munich is lovely too, my oldest friend lives there. I'm not going to be in Berlin around that time, so we won't be able to meet up if you decide to visit Berlin. But to be honest I'm not a fan of Berlin in fall and winter, when everything is grey and the weather is miserable. Not sure if I would recommend a visit around that time... I'm going to be about three hours away by car from Nuremberg, so if you decide to meet up with Ornella please PM me. I probably won't have time but who knows.

Oh and how about visiting either Copenhagen, Oslo or Stockholm? I love Scandinavia. Travel doesn't cost much and doesn't take much time if you go with a budget airline. I would guess you'd have that option from Munich.

I've also just come back from a week each spent in Hamburg and Cologne. I loved the Cologne Cathedral, but have to say I didn't like the rest of the city all that much, at least the parts I've seen (I was there to work). I liked Hamburg much better (been there once before for a long weekend).

My heart just skipped a bit!!! Janet, please pm me when you will be in Munich. We are going away for Xmas, but I'll look if I can figure something out, it's not that far from me!

As for recommendations, yes to all: Prague, Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg, all so easily reachable from Munich. But also perhaps a bit too much all at once, for each of those demands overnight stay at least to get a real feel for it. How about smaller and less known, but equally interesting (and photogenic!) German destinations: Rothenburg ob der Tauer, Nuremberg (largest Xmas market and nobody does those like Germans, plus my workplace is in Nbg he he) , Bamberg, Regensburg. Innsbruck in Austria.

Berlin, of course!! Or Cologne! I'd say these two places are very, very you :-)

Great shopping at Ingolstadt Village near Munich.

Also - Castle http://www.neuschwanstein.de

Vienna is a beautiful city with palaces, grand cafes, and opera (if you are into it). It's about a 4.5 hour train ride from Prague. Budapest is further east (2.5 hr train ride from Vienna) and is worth a visit for the baths and pastries.

Love all the other suggestions too, of course. One other city that comes to mind -- and it's close to London -- is Dublin. Very fun, compact city centre, very walkable, and close to the sea.

We were in Zurich for Christmas 3 years ago and Brussels last year. We are talking about doing London this year, have to decide soon.

I know you've already been to Brussels but there is a nightly light show on the Grote Market that is worth seeing if you are looking for a reason to go back there. Plus how can you go wrong with all the chocolate shops in their Christmas finery ! ?

Zurich was a wonderful place to visit for Christmas. It is a beautiful city and people wear gorgeous wool and leather. I walked by a Christian LaBoutin boutique for the first time in my life and had to stop and drool at the shoe candy in the window. The main streets are decorated with little tiny lights strung across the road high up that makes it look like you are looking right up into the stars. The store decorations are a bit more subtle and classy than typical American stuff IMHO. They have a "singing christmas tree" that runs through Christmas day...youtube video here..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmAiHraFL94

Also they have the typical open air Christmas market that you find it lots of European cities. I don't know if it stay open after Christmas.

Definitely visit the Christmas markets in Munich - magical at night. Nuremberg has one of the biggest and most famous Christmas markets in the world and it truly is wonderful. If you have time, it might be worth making a little detour on your way to Prague.
I take college students to Europe every year and this past summer we went to Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Krakow (with Auschwitz), Budapest and finished the tour in Vienna. Since you are already in that area of Europe, I would recommend to explore that region more.

I was in Vienna this past fall -- what a great city. Highly recommend. Music including the opera, Sacher Torte and all sorts of other cakes :), excellent public transportation, excellent museums including the Belvedere which houses several Klimt paintings and many other amazing works, lots of history. I also thought the shopping was quite good (including Paul Green shoes at about 1/2 price...) and looks like there is a Marriott there.

Not the sea or mountains though.... DH just got back from LIsbon and gave it an enthusiastic thumbs up -- apparently it's also very affordable. Croatia is on our list, too.

My family have been to Budapest and had a lovely time. . I believe Krakow in Poland is also fascinating - my SIL from Oregan has just spent time there and had some amazing photos to show us.

I can vouch for Salzburg - Jon was there earlier this year and also in the Alps - it is oh so pretty.

The Czech smaller towns and villages are also interesting - it has been a long time since I visited but Cesky Budejovice and Cesky Krumlov are two I remember.

I would also recommend Budapest, a beautiful and elegant city. And they seem to put whipped cream on everything!

Salzburg, Austria is magical all year, but especially during the holiday season. St. Petersburg is pretty fantastic, too, although maybe that's too far and too complicated visa-wise. Have a wonderful trip!

I've always wanted to stay at an ice hotel. The famous one is in Sweden, but there seem to be others in Europe. Plus with climate change it may not be possible soon.

http://www.fodors.com/news/pho.....ice-hotels

ETA probably won't be able to use points though

Looking at your route, I'd say Berlin and Amsterdam are must sees if you haven't been before. Salzburg is nice. I haven't been to Wien, but I'd like to go and have heard it's wonderful. Cologne is also very nice. I personally can take or leave Paris. Many years ago, I found it not such a friendly place. 100% jealous of your trip!
