Just to add, my skin is superdry and I use this in winter:

http://www.amazon.com/Egyptian.....B000WNLFBI

It is solid, almost like butter, but melts into your skin. I put in on when I'm flying and I actually look good when I get off the plane. It is greasy at first so if nothing else, you can use it as a night cream.

I've started the Clarasonic and that plus the EM and eye cream really is all I seem to need right now.

Angie - hahaha, you crack me up. I wasn't counting mascara...I meant eye shadows, liners, etc that are applied to the skin.

And oh my, YES, eyeshadows and the like when applied to older, less elastic skin often cakes and settles in the fine lines, exaggerating what you thought were attractive "laugh lines" and making semi dry skin appear crepey and YEARS older than you might otherwise appear. That's why as you age, you might want to stay away from certain formulations of eye shadow, including glittery types. They are not kind to more mature skin. To me, caring for the skin around your eyes is just good, basic skincare. I just don't want the skin around my eyes to look 20 years older than the rest of me if I can help it!

MPJ, I wear mascara every day :). I'm also not under the impression that wearing eye shadow and liner makes the lines around your eyes more noticeable.

I forgot to mention sunglasses - good point Zap.

I'm very skeptical about any kind of cream. Up until recently, I've just used regular face lotion all over my face, including under my eyes. In the past few years I've started to notice that I also have darkness in the inner corners of my eyes, which bothers me more than the fine lines that have been there since my 20s. I have been trying different eye creams and serums. None of them have made the blindest bit of difference. I still have the same fine lines are dark patches! I find the eye creams are all good at moisturizing, so I still use them, but I'm not expecting a reduction in fine lines.

One thing you have to remember is that the skin around the eyes is very thin, even in youth, and as you age and you've got less collagen firming things up, the effects of even slight dehydration are much more pronounced. Serums and moisturizers work by temporarily plumping up the skin, helping it retain water, lessening the appearance of lines. Some chemicals have been shown to have a possible small effect on the body's ability to maintain collagen (retinol etc) but I don't think there are any real miracle creams.

So, the one thing that DOES make my eyes look better? More sleep. Well, that and going easy on the alcohol. To help slow the development of more lines, I wear sunglasses and sunscreen. To help improve the appearance of the lines I already have, I use moisturizer (I think most any will do), and if I use undereye concealer, it's one that doesn't have a dry, cakey formulation. This helps prevent it from collecting in the creases. At the moment, the one I like is the MAC Prep and Prime Highlighter. It's not totally opaque, but it brightens things up without looking thick and dry.

And of course, I try to drink enough water, get enough rest, and not drink too much wine or coffee.

I also fully agree with Angie: laugh lines are what we get from laughing and living, and you gotta make peace with them!

Try Clinique's All About Eyes. Your issue may also be caused by the makeup ypu are using. As I have aged I have had to change my foundation formulas. You may want to go to Ulta, Sephora, or a department store and get a few samples to see what you like. Last spring I switched to Benifit's 'hello flawless oxygen wow' and liked it so much I purchased it in a darker shade for the summer. It has an SPF 25 so I do not need an additional layer.

@Angie - but you also don't wear eye makeup, IIRC. You might feel differently if you did.

I am also in the market for some kind of eye creams that will allow me to still enjoy eye makeup without making the fine lines look like deep cravasses, or highlighting dry skin.

The skincare line I use (Image) markets a hyaluronic acid serum I'm going to take a look at next week. I am really just aiming to get healthy looking skin, fine lines and all. I would love to try a retin-A product but with my rosacea I don't dare. This also means researching eye make-up and eye make-up techniques that are suitable for more mature skin.

ETA - I find makeup and fashion inter-related and would NOT consider this "off topic." I have posted makeup related questions in the general forum because I think the subject is style-related.

I use a Nivea Visage Q10 that I now have to get online since they discontinued it in the US. I also have a Garnier product I'm using in a pinch that seems to work fine. Both have sunscreen - a must for me due to the running outdoors. I'm 42 going on 43 and many people think I'm much younger, so it must be working
