Ah. Okay. Well, onwards, then. I wouldn't do it without belt loops for sure, I was thinking with belt loops only. But if it doesn't feel like "you" it's no good. That's the most important thing, I think.

Thank you VERY much everyone.

Suz, I have tried semi tucking many times--whenever I hang out on YLF. It just doesn't feel right to me. If I don't have belt loops, the belt slides up right under my breasts, which is not a good look. If I do have belt loops, it either sits at my natural waist, which is very shortening, or it ends up on the widest part of my body when I have on lower rise bottoms. Given that there's an 11 inch difference between my waist and hips, I have some problems with belt sizing that I just haven't felt motivated to solve :). Thank you for the suggestion though!

First of all, let me say that your hair looks really great. I am hair challenged, so I can appreciate good hair. :)

I've just glimped over the previous comments and haven't read them very closely. It looks like there were suggestions to tuck and wear a belt, and you were concerned about your short waist. I am short waisted too, and I find that if I roll my pants up when I tuck, that helps with the proportions.

My favorite outfit is #2. As another poster said, there is something about the black shoes that makes it work. I think it is because the black shoes is pulling out the black of your necklace, so the outfit is tied together. I wonder what would happen if for each outfit, you tried to tie together two accessories via color (of course, I am inclulding shoes as an accessory). Maybe a handbag would help here?

The only other thing I could imagine to add would be some kind of bangle. I think that that would add a little bit of extra detail.

Amy, you look so pretty. And to me you appear warm, approachable, and fun.

Admittedly, I am not a Seattle guy.

I think any of these outfits could work but I like 1 and 2 the best. Agree with the idea to scrunch the sleeves of 1. I know you say a semi tuck will be a bad idea, but can you try one just to make sure? It's kind of a magical trick for a lot of figures and works on people you wouldn't expect it to work on. Then you can add a belt and that in itself is a kind of "jewellery" so you don't have to worry about much else.

I also agree with those who say it depends where you are going. If you're meeting in a coffee shop (first date?) then you'd wear one thing. If you're going to a concert, or a ball game, or a dinner -- well, those are other things!

Trying to imagine what I might wear....gah, I don't envy you!!!

I really love the color of the cobalt blue on you. I wonder if it would work better with the bottom half of the outfit in #1? I'm wishing you luck and hoping we get to hear a few successes. Dating is hard, and casual dressy is one of the trickiest to get right in my opinion!

I like all of these, depending on the venue and if you feel like a bold colour or a soft one.

Just add a jacket or coat.

Jewelry is such a personal thing - I could see delicate sparkly pieces being very pretty with these but chunkier cuffs or earrings could also work.

Amy, I love 3 and 4. And your hair looks perfect,so keep doing whatever you do with it.
I also think guys pay less attention to clothes in general than us. So if you're the dressier one don't worry. Stick to what feels true to yourself and the right guy will definitely get it.
All important advice has been given, too late to join party. I already followed your first thread but didn't have much to add. Hope your dates turn out amazing.

I really like 1 and 2! The muted color palette in 2, with the black shoes, looks very chic. I think that 4 is a little too business-casual.

Of course it depends on your local culture and what you're going out to do, but those outfits look great for dating around where I live in California.

Whatever you wear, I hope your dates are fantastic.

I think your outfit will largely depend on where you're going, no?

I think your white and black jeans, and both peeptoe sandal booties, are fantastic. I'm not as blown away by the tops - you are really beautiful and would look really great (and approachable) in a few cool tops. (Your pic 4 looks more like a semi-casual day at the office to me than a date night.)

What about something like the Finds below? They would pair great with your jeans and sandal booties.

I think Vix has a point about bare skin. It's casual but also alluring, without necessarily being overtly sexy/try-hard. Imagine outfit #1 with a sleeveless blouse, for example. Outfit #2 is great. I like outfit #3 well enough. The bare neck, wrists and ankles plus sexy shoes are good - as an alternate I would try a slightly less flowy top, perhaps, if you have one. Outfit #4 reads to me like somewhat dressy work wear on the bottom but with a relaxed casual cut on top. I'd try that blouse with shorter pants, perhaps, maybe even the white ones?

Amy FWIW unless you're deliberately trying to create distance (in work settings etc) I bet you put people at ease very quickly no matter how formally you're dressed.

Adding to Rachy's vote for open collars, I do think bare skin -- to your comfort level -- skews more informal. Think of all those "sleeveless /sandal'd in the office?" discussions around the internet, ha. So keep flaunting those toes, arms, and collarbones as you've shown in this thread...plus anything else that appeals as you get to know a person!

Hey Vix!

No, I don't want to change who I am, but I do think I come across as more uptight than I really am during first encounters because I am nervous and also because I am formal in my dress and speech. I really just want to put my date at ease and not scare him off right away.

I was in a mixed formality relationship throughout my marriage and that didn't bother me much, except when he insisted on wearing birkenstocks with his suit, lol.

Hi Legs; I've missed seeing your outfits around here, and hope you're now in a place where the future looks as bright as your palette often is!

I think you look great in these, and am not much use aside to say there was a BBC series called something like "The Science of Attraction" and key takeaways re first impression dressing for women were rather sadly typical: V neck, pendant to focus the eye, defined waist (at least softly defined if not bodycon). [If you can track the episodes down online you might enjoy them!] So these outfits are very close, but you may want to semi-tuck or knot at one side or something.

On another note, I'm also a skirt/dress person and from what I can recall of my online dating days didn't change that up. In fact TBH with your legs, a skirt a few inches above the knee and some casual heeled sandals will no doubt be upvoted even by dates dressed in rags!

I firmly believe job hunting and dating are exactly alike and at some point you have to ask yourself how much you want to twist/conceal the things that are important to you. Sure, you land the job/person of your preferred sex but then there's pressure to keep your real self tamped down or more accommodating and for most of us that gets old pretty fast.

So: do you want to attract the greatest number of guys in Seattle* or the *right* guys -- ones who think your typical style of dressing is positive at best, neutral at worst? [I'm job hunting so trust, this isn't an entirely rhetorical question!] After all, Typical T-shirt Guy probably wants someone who isn't looking to change him up -- though he may evolve on his own.

I have to laugh a bit because I'm part of an oft-mismatched (in terms of formality and other things) couple and I'm sure we're judged. I just figure in terms of clothing he makes me look cooler and I make him look classier....

Best of luck to you as you navigate the dating waters. Remember to constantly ask yourself whether you like him instead of worrying whether he likes you.

*another PNWer here so I feel your pain

Here are three couples I saw this weekend that made me think of your dilemma.

1. He doesn't look bad, but to match her level of dressiness He might have worn a jacket and a tie.

2. She was wearing a fairly dressy dress with heels, and he was wearing a tank top, shorts and flip flops. And a backwards hat. It looked like they had different expectations. I was embarassed for her by the way he looked.

3. She's wearing a cute skirt, denim jacket and ballet flats. He's wearing shorts, and collared shirt and sneakers. This might be a way to go for you. She looks very nice but not too dressy. Of course it depends on what you're going to do on your date.

While I can appreciate the suggestions to tuck and wear belts, I'm hesitant to do so because im very short waisted and also won't that make me look more formal/stuffy?

Lol. I have vast armchair advice about this all. I think I'm a fairy godmother because I've seen some people down the aisle. I say: Relaxed approachability is totally key. That's why open collars and t-shirts. And I'd go small on the jewelry too.

'Course, it does depend a little on what sort of guy you're going out for. If you want a playa, for example, you need to get your 20-yr plastic surgery plan sorted out...

I had to go back and read your other post first. So here are my thoughts: First of all, I think you look fantastic! I love you in tops #3 and #4. I think the colors are really great for you, so they would be my top picks. I love the jeans, and I think you can also roll the hems on the black pants, and you can mix and match these tops with these two bottoms. As for the footwear, I like the openfooted booties better over other options (#1 and #2), so again, I would try to mix and match them with the outfits above. Both tops can be half-tucked, so maybe a belt? I would also choose long earrings and maybe some bracelets (I don't wear them myself, so I am hesitant to suggest some to you) over necklaces. I hope these are helpful! Good luck out there!

These are great, Amy! I especially like #1 but may I suggest that you scrunch the sleeves? What makes #4 seem too work wear to my eye are the black pumps. I like your footwear choices in the other 3 outfits. They are fun and not too serious. So a quick shoe change after work and you're set!

I think these are great starting outfits Amy but agree with some jewelry of some sort. Fall weather always makes it easier to add a third piece but some simple bracelets or necklaces might work. I do think you look kind and approachable though. Good luck with dating-there's some good ones out there!

Crazy one-- Yes, I'm doing online dating. My marriage of 15 years broke up last year and I'm really rusty at all of this stuff. I guess I didn't expect to be wearing jeans and tees like I did when I was in my 20s, lol.

kellygirl, thank you! I do have that Kate spade suede jacket from NAS. I'll see if I can coordinate that with some tops. Some days, it's probably cool enough for one, but on days like today, it's too hot for that.

Everyone who suggested jewelry--thanks. I'll see if I can find something appropriate

FWIW, as someone who goes on dates and lives in a similarly casual town, I don't think that showing up in "work-like" clothing for a first online date (that is what you're doing, right, Amy?) is such a bad thing. Often I'm meeting people straight after work anyway. The point is to look approachable and not like you're trying too hard, and not to create too much of a formality gap in clothing between you and your date.

A first date from the internet is essentially date zero, since you don't know each other and may not have any chemistry at all. Better to up the dress quotient when you move on to dates #2 and #3 or more when you have a better feel for each other and (hopefully) have the desire to keep things moving forward.

Date night with a S.O. is a different type of event altogether.

Love 1 and 2 especially! 3 and 4 look more work-like to me. Do you have a Moto? That might be a fun topper idea. You are looking amazing btw!
