Hi Nicole - Thanks for the fashion update - or lack thereof I love Portsmouth. It has those islands off the coast ... Smuttynose and a few other tiny ones ... They captured my interest when I read Anita Shreve's book - The Weight of Water. I adore New England!

Hi everyone! We are freshly back from our mini-vacation to Portsmouth NH. We had a great time and spent an unusual amount of time shopping--which most of you know is not my husband's favorite thing to do. I think he'd rather change the oil on the snowblower than go shopping.

There's not much to report on as far as fashion goes. Portsmouth is sub-casual and the majority of people are dressing for purpose, rather than asthetics. Almost everyone dresses to keep warm with little regard to how they look. The gear quotient is high. The only exception to this practice was this odd combination of opaque tights worn with very short tunics, and nothing else. Maybe the tights were actually leggings, but if they were, then they were as tight as tights and I honestly don't care to be getting that much of a view of anyone's "business".

Anyway the fashion highlights of my trip were the compliments I received from strangers on my red LC boots, and the Lucky jeans I scored for $38 at a consignment shop. The lowlights of my trip were all the ugly boots and flannel plaid shirts. Jason and I even had a discussion on the resurgence of flannel being a "back to basics--cool to look poor--revival of the grunge" phenomenon.

I shopped for warm boots, but did not see anything that piqued my interest. Uggs were abundant on the streets and in the stores. Which solidified my resolve to find boots that are equally comfortable and warm but not Uggs. But, in my shopping quest I decided that I want a low pair of ankle boots--I don't want to have to fuss to get my pant legs to tuck comfortably inside these boots. I want something I can just slip on and not worry about.

Anyone familiar with the area, knows that the Kittery Outlets are a 2 minute drive away--so instead of a massage I opted to use our time there to check out the outlets. We only hit a few stores, but the deals were pretty decent. I got two pair of dress pants for work at BR for $20 a piece, and some sweaters and layering pieces at the Gap. Jason picked up some stuff too--including a new pair of Keen winter boots. I had to convince him that $100 WAS an outlet price.

It was very cold and windy, so we didn't do as much walking around as we normally would. I decided to bring my white puffer (snowboard) jacket and I'm really glad I did. Any other jacket I own would have been a mistake. I only have one photo of me with the jacket on. There's also a photo or two of the awesome ice scuptures they have on display.
