I am IN Portland this week, visiting my daughter for the first time since COVID. Let me just say that there is a daily 30-40 degree swing in temperature, with the mornings being in the 50’s and 60’s. The hot part of the day takes time to get to, like 4 pm and even later! So a sweater or jacket is really advised until noon…. Crazy weather to dress for. Today, I woke up to 57 degrees, at 9:30 am now it is 66 degrees, but at 4 pm it will be 91!

Hope all goes well with your son’s surgery. Enjoy the local coffee and food carts- amazing :)

I’m add a sweatshirt, IMO hospitals are COLD and there is nothing worse than sitting around a hospital waiting, waiting, waiting, and shivering, you can’t control the waiting part, but you can try to control the shivering part.

Sounds like a good plan for minimal packing. I used to put second tee shirt over first one and then - denim shirt for extra insulation in case of some temperature drops ( simple second layer makes a difference ).
Maybe a light weight scarf - optional ( for the flight ).
I like the idea of one more pair of pants - just in case.

Everyone kept telling me how cold hospitals are before my last two trips involving hospital time with my parents, but I didn't experience that.
Still, any time you're spending a significant amount of time somewhere with climate control out of your hands, it's not a bad idea to bring a topper or scarf, and I'd think your denim shirt would probably be just fine for that purpose.

My one hesitation is in line with rachylou. I don't think I'd want to put my hospital outfit back on without a wash, so if the AirBnB doesn't have a washing machine, I'd consider having a separate pair of pants either for the hospital day or for the flight home. I wouldn't count on getting workout time in during this kind of trip, but if that's your sanity and routine, I get why including the gear might be a good idea.

Is it still heat wave-y? We’re coming out of it by this Tuesday.

Yes, hospitals are cold! Good luck to your son.

Overall it sounds like an excellent plan. I would take a lightweight jacket/cardigan in case it gets could in the hospital. I am always cold in the airports.

For myself, I’d want more variety than 3 black T-shirts, but I know some people prefer simplicity in their travel wardrobes. I bet the ruched dress you & Nuancedream both have would fit into this capsule. Do you do yoga every day? You could wear regular clothes for your walks and then perhaps only need one workout bottom piece.

My immediate thought is: you will want to get out of and wash, immediately, anything you wore at the hospital(!)

Lol. Hospitals are germy.

The denim shirt is a wise choice especially if you spend time in the hospital. They are often cold….. Also, almost everyone in hospitals needs lip balm, ( in my climate), so you may want to bring some for for your son, and for yourself as well!

This coming week, Mr.soon-to-be CS and I will be flying to Portland and back to support my younger son through some major (elective- he isn't ill) surgery. I'm starting to think about what to pack, and wanted ideas and opinions.

The weather is expected to be hot (90-100°F). We are flying in Wed night, and back out Sun afternoon, so two travel days one day at hospital and two recovery days at a local Air B&B. Other than errands related to food/medicine, we will just be at the Air B&B.

I'm not checking a bag, so space is limited, but I have a nice weekender backpack with a separate shoe compartment and laptop sleeve (I'll be wfh Thu, Fri).

I am thinking of bringing two workout outfits (sports bra, leggings, sleeveless tops, socks and running shoes), for taking walks and doing yoga. I don't mind wearing the same outfit two days in a row to save space, but I don't think I can go more than that. For flying out, I was planning on my olive green draw string pants from ON, a black graphic tee, and a denim shirt (which can be tied round my waist if not needed, or used as a topper for warmth) with slip on shoes. I was planning on wearing the same pants to the hospital the next day, and also for the flight home. I have two more black graphic tees that I will bring. I think I'll add jeans for back up. For the two days sitting around, I was planning on denim shorts, and swingy tanks. I'll bring sleep shorts and tanks for sleeping, and add a lightweight robe for lounging since weare sharing the Air B&B with my son and his partner. I think I will also add another pair of house shoes.
It's been so long since I've traveled anywhere!
Thoughts/Opinions/Experiences?
