Not a problem, Marianne! Another time perhaps. I'll be in Portland today but will be working with a group of students - so no shopping for me! Best of luck in Portland!

Thanks Laura! I'd love to meet, but this time we have a full agenda and in the best case I'll have a couple of hours by myself this Sat afternoon. If you happen to be around, let me know! That's also why I won't be able to explore the neighborhoods as much as I would like. We have relatives in the area and usually go there a few times a year, but the rest of the family doesn't have much tolerance for shopping, so I rarely go anywhere besides Powells.

Ok, I'm home and have all my Portland resources now! Pioneer Place features a ton of shops like Saks 5th Avenue, Coach, bebe, and more. At Pioneer Place there are a lot of brochures, shopping resources, and an information desk as well. NW 23rd has a TON of really good unique, privately owned boutiques. They are a little pricey but you can find some good deals. There are a lot of vintage shops in the Hawthorne and 30-40th blocks, Washington Square is very nice mall-ish place and has department stores, a massive Forever 21, and a massive Sephora! One of my students calls that Sephora her "heaven" and loves that store! :)

Let me know if you have any questions, or if you want to meet up! I know you'll have your family with you too, and I may be working but if I'm able and you're open it would be fun to meet you!

Oh how fun, Marianne! I fondly remember a weekend trip to Portland a couple years back, and browsing the many little neighborhood boutiques.

If you have the time, I'd try to venture out of the downtown area and Pearl district, some it mostly has the same chain stores we have here in Seattle, and instead explore one of the neighborhoods, e.g. Nob Hill, the area around Alberta, or Hawthorne. I remember having a fantastic brunch at the Tin Shed, and then strolling along Alberta afterwards popping into lots of cute boutiques carrying lots of very affordable local designers. I got one of my favorite summer dresses there. Portland is quite stylish.

Have fun!!

Oh thank you, Laura! Yes, please, if you think of something else, let me know. I'm definitely going to Powell's with my family, and I am hoping to hit the Rack and BR if I have time. That's interesting - we have Red Light and Buffalo Exchange stores here in Seattle, but it's been years since I've gone to either, so it's a good reminder.

Portland is the city nearest to me! Go to the Pearl district and grab a free map from the MAX system - a good portion of the area is fareless - and you'll be able to see varied recommended stops to make. Buffalo Exchange and Red Light district are some unique consignment shops that you should experience; they are distinctly "Portland" in my book. I would recommend the Blush Beauty Bar, the 2-story BR (love!), Nordstrom Rack, and Powell's Books for a variety of shopping. If you have an opportunity to eat somewhere, Cup & Saucer on Hawthorne is an excellent breakfast place, and Jake's Grill is a favorite of mine for lunch (and it's right off the MAX line). Once I'm home I can get better addresses and ideas for you, but that's off the top of my head!

Thanks for the link, Lena! This site seems pretty comprehensive and it looks like there are a few places in Pearl district to check out.

Hi Marianne. I don't have a lot of experience outside of downtown and it's been a very long time since I was in the NW/Nob hill area.

Here's an interesting website, http://www.travelportland.com/.....pping.html

Any shopping recommendations in Portland, OR? If stars align, I may have a couple of hours of shopping by myself, most likely downtown/Pearl district, but I'd consider other areas. I know the main big stores in downtown area but if anyone can suggest good shoe stores or interesting consignment shops or boutiques, that would be great. Any Euro stores? I'll probably check out the Dr. Martens store, and maybe even places like BR, since it's tax-free. Thank you!
