Thank you Suzanne for your travel and conference tips, they are very helpful! I'm from the Bay Area CA but wasn't sure if my normal music teacher attire was going to cut it or not in a tech environment...Learned a lot, thanks again

Hi Cyan,

I've lived here almost 5 years, so I can give some hints. I have also been to tech conferences here.

I would say that in mid-to-late May, it's likely to be fairly pleasant and not as rainy as it is over the winter and winter-adjacent months. It can still dip into chilly temps, so light outerwear is a good idea--but maybe more like a hoodie or denim jacket. Walkable shoes are important, and you do seem to be thinking in the right direction on that.

I don't know where you're from, but it looks like possibly a more formal fashion environment like the East Coast? Portland style is quite a bit more casual overall (but with a personal sense of flair, not usually as generic and sloppy as "casual" can sometimes go), and the tech world is more casual still than even streetwear. The tech scene is mainly T-shirts, jeans, and hoodies and such. "Business" wear or dresses are dressier than you're likely to see at PyCon.

Hello ladies,

I've been off the radar for a while, but love reading what you have to say to keep up-to-date!

I'm attending the PyCon conference in Portland (May 16-22) and was wondering what to pack? Weather forecast research results include everything from "nice and sunny" to "who knows?" LOL.

Also, if anyone is in the area, would love to meet up! This is my first Portland trip, can't wait to visit.

A few details: Will pack carry-on + work tote, either take the bus or Lyft to the convention center, wear biz casual on-site, and perhaps walk around town exploring when not sleeping or doing laptop stuff.

What I have so far:
--trench coat
--boots (low heel knee high + bootie)
--flats + low wedge heels
--jersey wrap dresses, sleeved
--ponte sheath dresses
--ponte pencil skirt
--various blouses + cardigans/ponte blazer
--cozy scarf/hat/gloves + travel umbrella
--hose (nude/black + small black pattern)

Any other conference tips you may have would be wonderful! I started teaching myself to code late last year, and have no idea what to expect at the event...other than learn a lot and have a good time :)

Thank you kindly.
