Can't do wool myself, but I found great ponte leggings last year by Kenneth Cole at Nordstrom Rack (but KC is sold many places). I also just got these on sale at gap:
http://www.gap.com/browse/prod.....cale=en_US
Good weight, very soft and comfortable.
These are great tights for my DD and probably great for women too:
http://www.hannaandersson.com/style.asp?from=SC|1|5|32|149|7||&simg=35874_97E
I stick with Hue super opaque control tops. Spanx two timing tights are good too as they are reversible which means double layer.

many thanks to both!

inge, i love the macys leggings, will check out soon (with gift card in hand, of course)

jenava, my favorite thick tights were Hue too! i LOVED them. too much, in fact, that they developed major heel holes

where did you purchase your smartwool tights?

Well, I am no help - I wear Hue leggings. I do have a pair of thick double-knit riding pants that are quite fitted that I wear as leggings, but they are several years old.

I wear the Nordstrom brand of tights - they're not wool. But they are cheap and easily replaced!

Last year I bought some smartwool tights for the coldest part of the year. I liked them pretty well. they did bag out after two wears or so, but they were mighty warm. Others might find them a little scratchy, but I was happy to be warm.

Yes, Autumn is definitely around the corner, yay!-)

I recently added some links to ponte di roma leggings in this thread, perhaps that will help?
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....n-a-budget

Not sure where to find the best wool tights, I'm sure someone else will chime in.

hi all,

i knew fall had arrived when i spotted shelves of thicker tights at marshall's last week. yay!!!

sadly, many of my wool tights developed huge heel holes last year, so i made do by double layering. now that a year has passed, i want to shop smarter and purchase warm leg wear that will go the distance.

specifically, i am looking for:
1) ponte di roma (or quality equivalent) leggings to wear with skirts/dresses + knee high boots

2) thick, wool tights (solid and patterned) to wear with knee high boots, low heel dress shoes.

any tips? i am aiming for something that achieves a sleek, slim look (no bulging knees w/ extra fabric).

you help is greatly appreciated

brand names, stores and/or personal experience stories would be great as well.

thanks!!!
