A couple of times a year I'll get sick of my clothes or decide I need certain things and I'll make a bigger trip - but the problem is that I have two little kids, and it's hard to get away without them, but it's also hard to shop with them. In my fantasy world I would get to shop with a girlfriend I really trusted, and no kids, every two weeks or so. I would die for sure! I shop once a week (just one piece), I'm very carefull with my money and only spend what I have. But let me say that everyday I save about 30m. to myself and go to the stores, see the latest trends, the colors, touch the fabrics .. for be that is better than a spa! Its a therapy! I would buy 1 or two things every other week. In the beginning I would go maybe twice a month, but since my savings basically ran out I have stopped completely. Before that, I would probably shop every week (either online or in store), but I still wouldn't buy a lot at once, and I don't really shop anywhere expensive. I recently got a new pencil skirt, but only because I had an interview in a few days and my current pencil skirt was just not comfortable. It was during a sale anyway so it was $39 down from $88. Before that, I had the YesStyle shopping spree which came at a very good time because there was no way I could have spent $200 of my own money! Sometimes I think about treating myself each month to something small, like a necklace from Forever 21 or a nice hand lotion, just to keep my spirits up. But so far I have been reluctant to do so, since at the moment all the money I have actually belongs to my parents (I know, shame shame). I just don't think it's right to spend their money on stuff like that. Occasionally my mom will treat me to something anyway so I think I should keep that money for necessities. The only exception this year was when I was in Boston in May, and I indulged a bit. I just got my stimulus check and, like a good citizen, put my money back into circulation. But even then, everything I bought was really cheap. I think I ended up with a cardigan, two tops, and a purse for under $50 because they were all purchased from places like Marshall's and Target. I don't see myself ever being a big shopper, in the sense of frequency or quantity (frequently buying lots of new things). All I really want is to be able to spend more on the few things I DO buy because it would open up so many options. These days, I'm doing a bit more shopping, but not actually buying a lot just yet - I figure I'm doing research. I was shopping a bit more, but then found I was making a lot of mistakes, so I'd like to stop that! Thanks to M2T's post earlier, I'm getting ready to make a list of stuff I actually need. Have read Angie's blog posts about capsule wardrobes and need to get working on that aspect as well. Figure out which area comes first, sort of thing. I'm also going to revisit a thread I posted a few days ago about creating a wardrobe from scratch, and take notes from all the great ideas I got from YLF'ers. To answer the question - I shop at least weekly, but have only bought once in the past month. I bought a bunch of stuff, but am not certain yet which things I'm keeping. My friends had to hint, my daughter and mother had to hijack me into a shopping trip (bless them). After YLF, I cleaned out my closet and realized I literally had almost nothing to wear! So since then, I have been shopping at least four times a month- more if I can manage it. But I'm on a very tight budget, my kids needs have to come first, so the frequent shopping is budget, thrift and sale racks. I have found trying to build a wardrobe on a tight budget means spending more time shopping. I can remember the days of going into Nordstrom, carefree, and getting what I needed. But I'm learning more about my personal style by having to do it this way. (Not to say I wouldn't love a little carefree Nordstrom time.) These shopping trips generally last twenty minutes and often involve just wandering around two or three shops. This helps me know what is in the shops, go home and make a decision about whether it will work in my wardrobe and return the following day to buy it. There is a lot more temptation in this method but when I find that I'm being tempted to buy something I mightn't need or work in my wardrobe, I walk out of the shop and go for a five minutes walk or a cup of tea to allow me to think it over. For example from T-day through the spring, I do very little shopping. First, because I can't stand going in the malls during the holidays. Second, because the stores are filled with holiday garb, and I have enough. Third, because I have learned the hard way that after-holiday sales are never bargains (I buy because the price seems like such a bargain - but then I wind up with closet orphans). Around late Feb/March, I get antsy and bored with my winter wardrobe and want to go shop for spring clothes. I also tend to have a long dry spell in the summer, but then it kicks back up in the fall and I will shop the most frequently then. Online shopping - I don't buy a lot online, but I browse online sites quite frequently. It used to be daily but since the recession, retailers don't update their offerings as frequently so it's less than that, but still a few times a week. I make a list of what I'd like to see in person, or hunt down things I didn't buy when I was in the store and later reconsidered, or duplicate items, or brands I know will fit. I am finding more and more my shopping trips end up with me buying nothing at all. I am getting much more picky now that my wardrobe is in good shape and I don't feel like I have any gaping holes. Everything I buy now is "icing on the cake" - not the cake. I still enjoy window shopping even if I don't come home with anything. Gets me out of the house (as a telecommuter this is a good thing), and I get some exercise walking around!
