Even without seeing your now-deleted photos, I know EXACTLY what fit issues you are talking about.

."....if I settle the waistband where I normally would, there's this fold of fabric that forms across the crotch. And if I pull them up so the crotch point is right, the front waistband is honestly above the bottom of my ribs. "

I find it on probably 75% of the pants I try. I finally realized that the issue is that the rise is too long, REGARDLESS of whether the pants are labelled low-rise, mid-rise, or high-rise. Those terms have no specific standardized meanings so you can't rely on just that unless you know the vendor. As others have said, a person's rise measurement is not always proportionally what you might expect, with everyone's body being so different. I'm 5'1", short wasted, and need a rise of 8 1/2 - 9", but I have "regular" length legs and prefer full length pants, so I want an inseam of at least 28". It's a tough combo to find. It's all about looking for the exact rise measurements, and not all vendors give that info online. Nordstrom is one of the best as far as giving detailed measurements for front and back rise.

All this is why I almost always duplicate pants now (especially jeans) when I find ones that are just right. I have a couple of small alterations I've done if the rise is just a tiny bit too high, as long as the pleat across the crotch is not noticeable, but otherwise no more wrong-rise-measurements pants are getting into my closet.

..and one last commend on Madewell, I love their overall vibe and look at their stuff pretty often. But...the tops are all too long for me, and forget their jeans. Last fall I went into a couple of different stores and asked this question..."do you have any jeans with a slim but not skinny leg, a rise of 8 1/2 - 9", and no distressing? Nope. I don't think that has changed :-)

I can't see the pics, but I feel your pain. I have long arms and legs, but I'm short from the neck to the pelvis. It makes finding pants that fit right extremely difficult. I have learned to read the measurements, especially the rise, because even some mid-rise pants are just wrong for my torso, and I can forget a high rise (which seems to be the prevailing style right now BOOO)

Yes, I’m 5’9” but really short between the hip and waist. Normally I look for a 9-10” rise at the most. But those are usually a skinny or slim straight cut, and just sizing up on those to get a more relaxed / boyfriend look doesn’t work right.

This is my first jeans attempt from Madewell, so it may suggest it’s not the brand for me. Disappointing since i like their look and so many of my previous jeans gotos don’t exist or work for me anymore.

(I deleted my pics, they were just so unflattering I couldn’t take it anymore.)

Gigi, yes! I’ve not had luck with Madewell and it may be because they cut their rises on the long side in general. The exception is a pair of shorts from about five years ago, but rises were lower then.

Jenni, you’re so right. It’s extremely individual and NOT tied to overall height at all. I’m six inches taller than you are and 11” rises are generally too high on me. 9-10” is my sweet spot, and harder to find than one might expect

It’s obviously so individual and tricky. I measured all my comfortable pants and jeans a year or two back when Angie first started talking about the high rises- or even 3 years ago. And I found they were all 11 inches- yet I am only 5 foot 1.5 inches ( 156 cm) which is really short. So perhaps I have quite a high rise for my short height. IDK.
Anyway I sympathise-and do keep trying! I always want to try pants on, which is pretty difficult currently without B&M. Maybe phone Customer Service for various brands to ask the rise measurement?

Sometimes we need to ignore categories and sizes, and just figure out what our own bodies require. Most pants labeled High Waist have rises of 11 to 13 or more inches. That might work for some taller women with long waists/rises, but not for me. I'm short and short-waisted, with an average rise, and for me, jeans and trousers with a rise of 9 or 10 inches are high waists. So I always look for item measurements when shopping online, and confirm the inseam length and rise before ordering. I've learned that you can't go by how things look on the model; they are generally about 5'10" and wearing a size extra-small! Good luck with finding the perfect high-waists-for-you. They are out there.

Definitely return these. You shouldn't have to settle for a wad of fabric at the crotch. I get that too when the rise is too high.

I wonder if Madwell just makes their rises really high. I have a pair of curvy jeans from them that fits well, but the rise goes about halfway up my back! And that's the petite size. Since I don't usually tuck with these jeans, I kept them. But they don't have the wad of fabric in the front. I have a poison eye for that and absolutely will return any pair of jeans that has it.

I also find high rises pretty near impossible to fit. I think that mid-rises just take one factor out of the equation (exact waist) and are easier to fit in general.

Yes, sorry, but you’ve got it sorted out. There are so many variations in rise that it’s mind - boggling. It doesn’t mean you can’t wear “ high-rise”, it just means it has to come to the right place on you. I have a long waist and long rise so it takes REALLY high rise to get to my natural waist, but for you it might be things labelled mid- rise.

Thanks, all, I appreciate the confirmation. I keep trying trendy cuts and none of them have worked. Angie, those Eloquii look promising. Janet, you and I have the same short hipped ness - all these higher rises that are happening just don't work for us. I remember in the early 90s they didn't work for me either and I was so glad when low rise jeans became a thing...

Definitely the wrong cut - I hate that fold at the front - I've tried to tailor it out of a pair and it is beyond my skill. Be picky - no one needs to be hitching up to their ribcage. I'm having an issue with some of my higher rises where the fabric folds just under the waistband at the back. It is fine if I don't tuck (which I don't often do) so I kept them. It is so hard to do online shopping for new styles.

I really had hopes for these curvy cut jeans from Madewell - maybe not high hopes, but some hopes. Pros: the fabric is a sturdy but not stiff 100% cotton (aka how they used to make denim all the time), and the curvy cut is real - no gap in the back waist, and the hips/thighs fit well.

However, I just can't get over the high rise on me - if I settle the waistband where I normally would, there's this fold of fabric that forms across the crotch. And if I pull them up so the crotch point is right, the front waistband is honestly above the bottom of my ribs. I honestly think they look better in the photos than IRL. Am I missing something, or are these a quick no like I thought when I first put them on?
