Oh, and I have been keeping my cowboy boots. Western will roll around again. If nothing else in the meantime they create an instant Halloween look. And I recently wore them to a Western themed charity event.

I have kept all my pointy toe shoes except the high heels. I never loved the really high heels, they were purchased when few alternatives were available or I needed a specific color. I kept my mid and low heels and have been wearing them when we head out to dinner, so I have been slowly wearing them out. I have two pairs of DVF sock booties that are a bit edgy, and I wore them recently for cool weather outdoors dining, so I suggest keeping your metallics for fun casual evenings out when it gets a bit cooler.

I’m laughing again as I reread the “a little bit angry” as a style descriptor. I can embrace a touch of that myself! I sure don’t like to go too sweet. ;-)

SF, I doubt we’ll have much ranch nostalgia, but the boots are staying, thanks! Funny thing is, I think I wore those styles more in the pre-ranch days than during. On the ranch I mostly wore tall ugly muck boots (kept them for camping trips because they’re great in the rain and mud).

I have accepted the chunky sneaker under flare jeans look, but I’m looking forward to mixing it up with those pointy toe boots again.

I come at this from the opposite direction (as you & I often do)—I like the snappy look of a pointy toe coming out from under a pant leg, but as we discussed on the blog post, most of the point is not actually filled by toes—it extends beyond the end of the foot. Like LaPed, I vastly prefer a shape that follows the shape of the foot Besides not wanting to trip on the “extra” in the pointy toe, I also don’t appreciate anything making my feet look bigger. These almond toes are the pointiest shoes I own, though I do like even my “stompy” boots to be fitted.

Sal, that’s great news for me—I never got into the whole fashion sneakers thing, and much prefer the look of loafers/oxfords on myself.

Janet, I vote keep the cowboy boots, because they work so well with the bootcuts you favor, because that really color seems to be making a resurgence (witness a certain blouse at NAS) and because you might like them if/when you’re nostalgic for a certain ranch at some point in the future.

Fun to hear everyone’s take on this!

GS, those boots were a saga! I fell in love with them in a shop in Santa Fe but they were not the right size, so I stalked them online for months! When I finally got them, they were a bit shorter than the pair I tried, which made them a bit less versatile than I would have liked. Nonetheless, I wore them under bootcut jeans to many a rock show. These days I’m drawn to simpler styles without studs and such, so they feel a little OTT now, but styled the right way with a super simple outfit I’d wear them again.

Carla, those shoes are signature for you! I hope you find another pair. Sometimes splitting wears is good when you want a favorite to last forever.

LaPed, I’m laughing at “foot-shaped” but I guess that’s accurate!

Kkards, those patent blue pointy toe loafers are awesome! I once got a similar pair in deep red but they ended up being painful to wear. An expensive mistake.

I also love pointy toes. I have small feet (6.5) so the length works well. My foot is blocky (almost rectangular), with short toes and a very high instep. I’ve had good luck with shoes that start wide then taper in. It’s hard to predict until I try them.

Janet, your cowboy boots, especially the ones with the flat metal studs, are one of my earliest memories of YLF. I bet some of yours will rotate back into use eventually. Or just stay as beloved objects in your closet.

I really love the look of pointy toe footwear but haven’t worn any of mine in the last few years. I’m seriously considering passing some on, especially the ones that were not super comfortable to begin with. I’m pretty sure my feet have gotten even more fussy since 2019…

My Marc Fisher black patent oxfords with super pointy toes are among my most comfortable shoes, I think because they have a low heel and fit me well. The super rounded toe Alegrias are also super comfy. I find the mules very comfy as well as the more masculine oxfords. Most combat boots -- which never come with pointy toes -- are comfy as long as they are wide enough.

I have short toes and wide-ish forefeet with bunions, tiny heels, and right foot that hardly bends. I think Marc Fisher and Franco Sarto have lasts that somehow work for my feet. If I use tongue pads that keep my feet from sliding forward on shoes with hardly any heel, pointy toes are just fine.

I have hardly any pointy shoes and much prefer foot-shaped. I have long feet for my height (5'4" and a size 9 or 9.5), so I don't feel flattered by elongated shoes. They easily veer into clowny/witchy territory to my eye. My pointiest toes are these Thursday Boot Co Captains. Reasonably roomy toe box, and just the right shape for most of my wide-legged pants. Wearing full-length wide-legs with sneakers or other round-toed shoes is a bit too literal a throwback to 90s middle-school fashion for me. :)

JK, I wonder about whether my change in preferences will be more permanent too. Something about reaching an age where 60 is closer than 50 has me reevaluating the right balance for me of casual, refined, and edgy. I feel like I’m feeling it out a lot lately — especially in summer when not much feels very edgy. I wouldn’t mind some pointy toed shoes that add a bit of edge and drama, if I found them and they also were comfortable and work styled with a casual outfit!

I adore a pointy toe! It makes me look taller and adds “edge” to the outfit. I do prefer the ones with thicker soles, though— like you Janet, I feel the thicker sole balances my thicker/curvier body shape better than a thin sole.

These days I pretty much only wear sloppy slip on shoes. I walk the dog a million times a day! Or, if I’m working, I walk a lot for public transit so that limits my show options. My bunions are fussy so pointy toes are harder to wear Are all these changes or preferences permanent? I have no idea.

Haha Rachy!

I find pointy boots easy enough for casual activities - my navy ones are a workhorse. I used to wear pointy pumps and jeans, but I don't gravitate to that look any more. The brown and black pumps, and the blush oxfords are all for my dressier looks either for work or for evenings out, I can't see myself wearing them outside those environments (unless I become a lady who lunches).

Janet - I could see most of your pointy boots working with jeans or midaxi length dresses or skirts casually.

I read an article in The Guardian about the return of the loafer, and how the sneaker is no longer an edgy look. Whllst I am not subscribing to this perspective totally, I know what they are saying, and I do wonder if loafers, boots (or dressier footwear that is stll comfortable) will take over from sneakers a wee bit.

The nod I've given to more casual dressing is that I now wear almost exclusively short heels or flats. However, because flats can read casual with rounded toes, I do enjoy having some with pointier toes.

But pointy toes do NOT suit my feet, so I've never been big on them. I have a few pairs, but they aren't my most worn, nor are they my most comfortable, so I limit them. I don't feel that they're inappropriately dressy for my life, though.

These were my last non sandal shoe purchases- both almond toe, with the boots a bit more rounded. The main difference for me from BC19 has been lower heels-no more than 2 inch most days. Low heels/flat plus round toe is just way too casual for my comfort zone for everyday, at least for cold weather.

That said my gold Birkies have been getting a lot of wear this year! I think the difference is in warm weather I only wear skirts and dresses, so the outfits themselves are elevated enough. In cold weather I usually wear pants, which feel more casual, so I need the shoes to dress the outfits up.
I definitely don't foresee buying very pointy footwear again, or really any extreme of footwear style.

Same, Suz! I’m keeping some of these for now, because when I have worn them, they’ve been just the right thing and have been comfortable. They’re plenty current considering those western booties at NAS and other retailers. I’m particularly fond of those ancient blue Modern Vice boots, the Dalaran snake print, the black patent Bel boots, and the AGL mesh ones (although those have turned out to be valet shoes — no significant walking in them!). I’m putting the metallic ones in the holding zone bin to review when fall starts, along with anything with a heel over 3”.

The Free People flats and the green oxfords are not frequently worn but have high happiness factors when I do wear them, so they’ll stay.

I like pointy-toed shoes, and have been wearing them again now that we are back in the office two days a week. However, I am trying not to buy more of them - right now my preference are squared or snipped toes.
I was very happy last fall to find a perfect casual/dressy hybrid: a pair of tall burgundy boots with log sole and almond toes. They were immediately workhorses.

Janet, I've found something similar. I like my pointy toed footwear but don't wear it at the moment. I haven't worn my Blondo western style booties more than about once a piece for the past 3 years. They're my only truly pointy toed footwear at the moment. Why don't I wear? Largely because I'm not living an urban life, not out doing stuff aside from walking on suburban roads, sidewalks and outright trails. Also walking a lot. in the rain and mucky conditions so a refined shoe doesn't cut it.

I did see quite a number of western style boots in the NAS so I think these might have a moment again, and if I begin heading out in the evenings a bit more, I will put my old Blondos on again, for sure. So I'm hanging onto them. It's just that my current lifestyle is clearly a sneaker, stompy boot, and casual sandal life.

That said, as I mentioned in the post, I prefer wearing snip-toes, oval toes and almond toes A LOT more these days:

I’m with you all the way here , Janet . Even to not being drawn to metallic footwear right now . I appreciate the aesthetic idea of a pointed toe with a flared , longer pant , but they honestly look a little dated to me now , even if they are currently trending ( are they ? ) . I have hung on to a cpl of pair of pointed toe boots , but haven’t worn them now in at least 2 years . I try them on every once in awhile and they don’t even feel particularly comfortable anymore . Let’s face it , they aren’t good for overall foot health anyways .

I haven’t worn my western boots in several years. I do wear bootcut jeans. All the years everyone else wore skinny jeans, I kept wearing bootcuts. But in cooler weather I wore them with whatever kind of boots I felt like, mostly booties.

My pointy toe shoes are more formal and I don't plan on buying more. I do like the look of them and wear them when going out and not being required to walk great distances.

More recent shoe acquisitions have a rounded toe and lower heel at the end of my finds selection.

Janet, I have similar feet to you and Jaime - (but even lower volume I suspect because I need sandals in a N or NN width and you don't) - and totally get why pointy toe shoes work well. You have beautiful shoes!

I like to wear dainty shoes, and continue wearing my true pointy toes in Finds #1 to #3. But #4 and #5 are for formal only,

Like you Janet, pointy shoes suit me. I have been living in a casual world for many years, and was an early adopter of the pointy toes when they started showing up again. I guess I like how the points sort of offset my casual outfits actually. I am a fan of lug soles and stompy shoes as well, just depends on my outfit and mood. Lately I am definitely preferring a lug sole when I am standing on my feet for long periods.
