Hi Melissa! I also have very fine (although somewhat wavy, if that makes sense) hair. I usually keep it no longer than chin-length. My hair's also seriously color-treated. I don't believe that the more you spend, the better the product works - I've worked in salons and seen products that go for $25 for 4 ounces not do a darn thing. That being said, I love L'Oreal's EverPure volumizing shampoo and conditioner. And I agree with Taylor about the mousse. That's the way to go! I've used Big Sexy Hair with some success but actually find that Got2Be Fat-Tastic works great. Use a large-barrel, boar bristle round brush with it. Finally, because I'm paranoid about my hair falling flat, when I'm done blow-drying it I put 4 jumbo Velcro rollers just into the top half - 2 along my part, and one on each side. I spray them with Tresemme's 24-Hour Body root spray, blast them with the hairdryer for a minute at most, then let them set and cool while I do my makeup. When I'm done I take the rollers out and my hair's all bouncy. It's not as time consuming as it sounds - start to finish (not counting the time it takes to put on my makeup), my hair's done in about 15 minutes.

You've already gotten some great advice, just thought I'd give you something else to think about!

BTW, I really liked your cut. Even though you said you hadn't got around to styling it just right, it still looked really cute on you!

I'm curious about the paste as well. I used a product by Unite called "Second Day" that I absolutely loved. My salon is not carrying it anymore and I can't seem to find it on line--but if you are in a major metropolitan area you may have better luck finding the good stuff.

Sorry to be so late checking back in! Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'll see how they work out. Renata, thanks for mentioning modern organic products--now I have an excuse to buy a brand I already really liked!

April, not even Sideshow Bob hair could make you look unfab.

Tanya and Frances, I'll give the Brumble and Brumble a try, thanks!

Taylor et all, do you have a particular paste you'd recommend? I've had very bad luck with these making my hair look horrible and greasy.

Londonkiwi, I wish there was some kind of hair exchange program! Although we might have to set up a multi-way swap, since I actually have tons of hair, it's just that it's very fine and has no volume.

I have fine straight longish hair and use volumizing mousse, as Taylor suggests. L'oreal Texture from the salon, but I've heard that you can sometimes find it at Marshalls. I dry the roots of my hair first before the ends for added lift.
My stylist also convinced me to get a good quality flat iron for my hair. Because me hair has no curl, I'd never have thought of it. She told me to use it vertically from roots to ends in the places I need lift and it really works.

Hi Melissa, please see Maya's thread on brushes. I started using Wen by chaz dean 2 months ago. This stuff is a miracle. But you have to use it just like the video on youtube says. ( No detergents, for foaming, natural, )

Melissa, I'll second Tanya's recommendation of the Bumble & Bumble Thickening Spray. I use it every day and love it, plus it comes in a small travel-size version if you want to test it out. Also, I like to use Phyto Volume Actif spray around the roots and crown, but would go with the B&B first. Like you, I have the fine hair/lack of volume problem, so I don't get miracle results unless I'm at the salon having it professionally blown out.

I also have fine short hair, I find with my hair that I can't use conditioner every time I shampoo my hair because it makes it more soft, limp and very flat.
For shampoo I like mop (modern organic products) brand, lemon-grass shampoo for fine hair.
And before I blow dry my hair I use Rusk brand body and texture ampllifier, it's called Thick, spray and dry, finish with Rusk hairspray, I like w8less plus. That is it, that's what I do, hope this helps you:)

I have never found anything I can use long term. Meaning I have found a few things that work for the first week, but even when I wash out the buildup and everything, it just seems to stop working. I'll be watching this thread with interest...

Stay away from gels, load up on Mousse, they add body and volume:)
Add some texture type paste after you blow dry and you should love your new short cut!!

I use Redkin shampoo and conditioner (I think it's called the clear moisture formula or something like that) and I"m currently using Redkin root lift before I blow dry which I like. I was using Redkin hairspray but have switched to Tres Semme which I like almost as well as the Redkin. I have very fine hair as well and get good results with these.

I would advise though that you ask your stylist what she would recommend for your cut and style.

April, you are too funny! I am very sure your hair does not look anything like that.

Melissa, I also have a fine, long straight hair. In my opinion, it is the styling products and actual styling, as opposed to the shampoo and conditioner, that are more important for producing more volume. What has worked the best for me is Bumble&Bumble Thickening Spray:

http://www.amazon.com/Bumble-T.....B000BIUGV4

Melissa -- good for you for considering the whole picture!

Taylor and Renata will chime in with their expertise, I'm sure. As for me, I'm so sorry to be useless on this topic since the summer humidity makes my hair look like this.

Hello,

YLF has inspired me to up my game in more arenas than just my clothes. Please don't throw rocks at me, but I've basically just always used hair products bought at the grocery store (ie, Dove).

I'm ready to mend my ways, but I have no idea what to get! As mentioned elsewhere, I have superfine straight hair, and a verrry short new haircut. I'm looking for shampoo, conditioner, maybe some kind of mousse/heat protector, and hairspray. I'm willing to listen to recommendations for other products, but whenever I've tried to put in anything else in the past, it just weighs my hair down or makes it greasy.

Please be specific, and if I can buy it online that's better than having to go to a beauty supply place.

My hair thanks you in advance.
