I don't much care for either generalizations or absolutes. Although I agree that obesity is a challenge in many countries, including the US, weight gain or weight fluctuations do not necessarily equal obesity. I don't think it is fair or correct to make a huge leap to the use that term. Many women of all kinds of backgrounds have dealt with weight fluctuations due to all sorts of reasons. It just goes with the territory sometimes, and each person has to deal with it in a way that best suits her and her situation. The average weight gain was far more than previously quantified. I have been practising medicine throughout that period, and the decline in smokers has not led to a rise in obesity.
