I was disappointed at the "successful" part of the article summary: "In Silicon Valley, successful women are increasingly unafraid to dress well ". Specifically, not many in-the-trenches-of-their-career women were featured in this article, which speaks to the strength of the environmental norm to dress casually.

I found this commentary (by a Sikh woman, in the Huffington Post) on the shooting in Wisconsin moving: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....50044.html

Her post is instructive on a number of different levels, and her reflections on learning and practicing tolerance, both of others and herself, are a well-taken, timeless reminder.

As I read through, I found myself especially struck by the sentiments in the following paragraph:

"Living in this country as a Sikh woman, I fit in with American culture and even follow fashion trends, although I do not cut my hair. Frequently, I hide the fact that I am a Sikh to blend in and fit it. It is easier to hide than to explain my religion to my colleagues, friends and students. Until today, I have camouflaged myself into my role as a nurse and as an educator, frequently separating my religious beliefs from my occupation. So tomorrow brings a new perspective, the responsibility to educate all those around me".

While I am not necessarily advocating for mixing religious beliefs with other aspects of one's life (such as occupation, for example), I am humbled and inspired by her intention to be more true to herself in more places and with more people. I read it as an instance of practicing tolerance, beginning with one's self.

Continuing with the Olympic theme - I found the sports bra worn over shirt for women's volleyball players a bit odd, but maybe it was just to fight off the local chill.

For my 2¢ on the detour conversation du jour Gary Taubes' "Why We Get Fat And What To Do About It" is a good summation. http://garytaubes.com/works/books/why-we-get-fat/

I enjoyed browsing through Tory Burch’s Fall 2012 collection/lookbook. Her use of rich colors, patterns, and textures is a feast for the eyes. My favorite outfits are those that feature a combination of deep violet and orange. http://www.toryburch.com/Lookb.....lt,pg.html

As for the detour topic, I have to chime in for a bit. I don't much care for either generalizations or absolutes. Although I agree that obesity is a challenge in many countries, including the US, weight gain or weight fluctuations do not necessarily equal obesity. I don't think it is fair or correct to make a huge leap to the use that term. Many women of all kinds of backgrounds have dealt with weight fluctuations due to all sorts of reasons. It just goes with the territory sometimes, and each person has to deal with it in a way that best suits her and her situation. I think I would just prefer to remain sensitive to anyone's concerns and not categorize them.

Thank you, Inge

Haha, love the funny conversation detours. I think LF was referring to me, as I was recently complaining about my weight gain and wardrobe setbacks. Unfortunately, it's out of my control...I think my metabolism right now is such that I would still gain weight even if I tried to starve myself, so I'm just not going to worry and eat as healthily as I can. I'm definitely not obese and the weight will sort itself out. Actually, I would bet that there are plenty of French women who suffer from my exact same medical condition!

Anyhow, here's my link from Sal, a little different from my situation, but still with lots of useful tips on how to dress for weight fluctuations:

LF,
Quite an interesting response, especially in light of obesity becoming a global epidemic and most countries reporting an increase in obesity levels. Also, I do recall a study done a bit ago, I want to say it was conducted by British and French institutions, quantifying the amount of weight gain in women, following smoking cessation. The average weight gain was far more than previously quantified. Your first hand experience tells me these reports need to be taken with a huge grain of salt, then.

It will take a little while but soon you will realize that the approach here is quite relaxed. No one really gets offended or put off by a small detour from the main subject. I have a tendency to speak my mind and I thought much more relevant to address you here, than starting another thread. Don't you think?

Thank you Inge for allowing the indulgence and I'm sorry if I upset anyone with my side conversation. I want to say I will not do it again, but knowing myself, I know I will

Zapotee,

This is rather unfair to Inge (sorry Inge!), but since you asked me the question, I'll respond, even though this is a thread to post this week's links.

I am not an endocrinologist, simply a gynaecologist, but since gynae problems are at the root of many endocrinological problems, I probably know more than the average physician, so I am not exactly unaware that there are problems other than over-eating that result in obesity.

In answer to your question about the prevalence of female smokers, France is the country the OECD cites as being the one in which smoking rates have fallen the most sharply in the last two decades. In 1998 almost 33% of adult women smoked. By 2010 that rate had dropped to slightly less than 21% (OECD and WHO figures). I have been practising medicine throughout that period, and the decline in smokers has not led to a rise in obesity. Now I think we should stop high-jacking Inge's thread, don't you?

This is totally OT and I completely understand if you don't want to use it, but after watching the men's 100 meter race in the Olympics last night, I was completely captivated by this feature in the New York Times that compared Usain Bolt's winning time to the winning times in all the Olympics going back to 1896. The data are fascinating and the computer graphics are out of this world!

Interesting link, LF. I will read up. I am a nutrition fanatic. Sadly, weight fluctuations are not necessarily an expression of faulty eating habits and you can still experience weight gain in spite of doing everything right.

Since we are in generalization territory, starting with the name of the link you posted:) I wonder if the high incidence of smoking amongst French women helps with the issue of maintaing weight. I think smoking helps quite a lot in curbing appetite. I know I ate less while I was a smoker.

As a newcomer to YLF I haven't yet seen a link to this American-based website, so please forgive me, fellow posters, if you've already covered it. I fear you may well have done, but I have received so many posts on my own threads this week, as well as PMs, telling me that because of weight changes, a whole new wardrobe is essential, so it seems à propos to post this link, in the hope it might help someone who is struggling needlessly with weight gain: http://frenchwomendontgetfat.com/ . The web-site is an extension of the book of the same name, and although it may seem like a sweeping generalisation, it truly isn't. Even in my practice of medicine, where I've come across most problems, I think I can honestly say that obesity is NOT one of them. French women, who, as I have repeatedly stated 'investment dress' must, of sheer economic necessity, if nothing else, ensure their weight doesn't fluctuate.
