I really liked this paragraphs in the NY Times article, Joy:
"Some people talk about style as “owning” something, usually “it.” But
what seems more important than “owning” one’s body or aesthetic or look
is inhabiting it. The stylish do not control their bodies from above
like a ghost in a machine; they live in them. They may appear fierce or
daring or avant-garde, but they are actually quite comfortable."

I think she made a good point here: if you feel comfortable with yourself, and comfortable with what you are wearing, then that shows. It's a kind of confidence and ease that you can feel and see when a person "has" it, and it makes them (and their outfits, or entire look) stand out.

Thanks so much Kari (the embroidery is beautiful, WOW) and Joy (and Isabel for finding Joy's link!). I'm saving these two articles to read at leisure later tonight, and will let you know what I think of the "Effortless Hair", Joy.

This weekend there was an I teresting article in the New York Times Style Magazine called, "At Home In Her Hair" by Christine Smallwood about looking effortless beginning with hair. I can't seem to copy a link but would love to know if Fabbers agree with the author's thoughts.
ETA: Online it is called "Effortless Hair? It's Complicated "

Oooh, I finally found a link to coincide with the thread being open and my having time to log in! Yay!

Here's a really cool one about white-on-white, intricate, Ukrainian embroidery from my favorite perfume blogger, Bois de Jasmin (her photography is stunning too.)

http://boisdejasmin.com/2016/0.....vanka.html

Edited to add: here's the part that intrigued me most.

"Merezhka exists all over Ukraine, but its Poltava variant is marked by the use of rich floral patterns and white color. To create it, a master removes threads one by one, and then embroiders tiny stitches on the remaining fabric to create a pattern. The finished work looks like lace, and it’s done entirely by hand. The serrated edges on the collar and cuffs are also handmade.
The “white on white” technique doesn’t allow for any mistakes, and an error in counting even a single thread leaves the whole pattern crooked. Moreover, no knots are allowed in the finished work, and the reverse should look as neat as the face side. To give a design luminosity and form, threads of different weights and finishes are used, while the stitches are angled to let light catch the minute details."

This is truly artful and anyone who loves crisp AND ladylike, detail and perfection you would only notice at close up, and WHITE clothing will admire this.

I admire from afar, as I'm too messy for pure white!

Wow Greenjeans ! Totally fascinating. Thank you so much. It made me think of the fad with the models that looked emaciated and had the cocaine "look" . Just amazing what influences our looks, our culture. Really making each era uniquely particular. Almost pure luck. Like the butterfly and the tsunami. Tuberculosis as a tipping point for fashion for decades. Holy cow !

This Smithsonian piece: How Tuberculosis Shaped Victorian Fashion is a fascinating read.

'“We also begin to see elements in fashion that either highlight symptoms of the disease or physically emulate the illness,” Day says. The height of this so-called consumptive chic came in the mid-1800s, when fashionable pointed corsets showed off low, waifish waists and voluminous skirts further emphasized women’s narrow middles. Middle- and upper-class women also attempted to emulate the consumptive appearance by using makeup to lighten their skin, redden their lips and color their cheeks pink.'
