All the stats in the world don't make up for comments. They're the life blood of a blog and provide no end of motivation and satisfaction to the writer. They also enhance the experience for newcomers, since they often provide an interesting perspective, comic relief, or just a general indicator of the pulse of the blog/community in question. I still receive comments on posts that are 3 to 4 years old. Newbies browse through the entire site - and that means archives too. Search engines pick things up which are a couple of years old and that's important to remember. So all comments posted at any time are valuable.
