<div>suntiger - That is helpful, thanks.</div><div>La Belle - That's a great way of looking at it.</div><div>Becky - Ugh, the article is behind a paywall for me, but hopefully other people can read it in full because it sounds interesting.</div><div>Suz - Interesting!</div><div>Kari - No worries, feel free to start as many threads as you like. And thank you for finding all of these for us, I'm learning a lot!</div><div>Ophelia - I too really hope they can find solutions for this. Unfortunately I've experienced the same issues with faux leather as Kari and Joy :-((</div><div>nuancedream - Oooh nice! Keep us posted on those new specs!-)</div><div>Carla - Good one! And eye-opening what Lyn Slater said: <i>"‘This is the only way I am ever written about anymore. I feel erased as<br />
an individual; not empowered. I’m not the same as the women who appear<br />
in these features with me, nor are they me….Everything else about me<br />
except for my age is now deemed unimportant or insignificant. In the<br />
guise of addressing ageism my multiple social positions, achievements,<br />
history, and uniqueness are discounted leaving me feeling ever more<br />
invisible. Putting people into “uniforms” strips their identity away and<br />
as I have found in my long career in social welfare, it makes it easier<br />
to neglect and do bad things to them. This is fetishizing age; not<br />
admiring it.’"</i><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>These are all excellent, thank you all so much!<br /></div></p>

<p>Me too, Joy, and disappointing as I really loved some of those items and they were otherwise well constructed. It was a shame to have to toss them. I got more than a year out of them but no more than 5 years (jackets, culottes, purses.)&nbsp;<div>I’d love to buy leather secondhand when I can find things that fit. I’ve had some success from resellers.&nbsp;</div>

<p>Ophelia, my experience with faux leather has been off= putting. A faux leather jacket I puchased literally fell apart with the faux part falling off after 1 year of sporadic wear at most. I will not buy faux leather again unless I intend to throw it away after a year. I really hope that better faux leather will be in our future. I understand what you are saying. Leather is like real fur. As far as I know a good faux version has not yet been made . Educate me if I am wrong.. I only buy leather second hand to be more resposable and keep it from landfills.

<p>Ophelia, this is an interesting companion about the leather debate and faux-leather alternatives that come with their own problems/impacts (not only environmental, but also that they don’t last and end up in landfills much more quickly.)</p>
<p>“The result is one big game of fashion whack-a-mole – you cut out one toxin over here, and it emerges again several steps later down the supply chain. As a journalist and a fashion-lover, I find myself casting around for an easy equation to adopt when weighing up a purchase. Should I save up for a much-lusted after Givenchy leather blazer, at £3,174, knowing I will wear it for life – or the faux leather Low Classic alternative, at £355, which I may well go off in several months’ time? Should I indulge my animal-lover instincts in favour of a synthetic alternative that may well have a far harsher impact on the environment?”</p>
<p><a href="https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/vegan-leather-sustainability-debate-2019" rel="nofollow">https://www.vogue.co.uk/articl.....ebate-2019</a></p>
<p>(My own budget is NOWHERE near the Vogue author’s, but my preference right now is to buy things that last - and my experience is that my genuine leather items looks great while synthetic items bought at the same time have rotted and cracked off to the point where they can’t be salvaged... I hope that eventually synthetics will be made to last decades, but we aren’t at that point.)

<p>With all the talk about sustainability in the media, I was glad to find this issue being addressed, even if the bulk of companies and consumers looking for sustainability look the other way. </p>

<p>Is Fast Fashion a Class Issue? | Refinery29<br /><div><br /></div><div>A thought-provoking exploration of fast fashion. Some excerpts as food for thought about our consumption habits and how we talk about ethical and sustainable options.</p>
<p>“Hypotheses aside, though, the statistics that illustrate how we consume clothes now are really rather grim. They don’t point to a nation of empowered shoppers; quite the opposite. According to a report by sustainable thinking charity <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/assets/downloads/publications/A-New-Textiles-Economy_Full-Report.pdf">the Ellen MacArthur Foundation</a>, British people are hoarding £46.7 billion of unworn clothing in their wardrobes at any one time. Last year, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.oxfam.org.uk/media-centre/press-releases/2016/06/over-three-billion-clothes-left-unworn-in-the-nations-wardrobes-survey-finds">a survey by M&amp;S and Oxfam</a>, found that our nation's wardrobes hold 3.6 billion unworn clothes – that’s an average of 57 items per person – with an average of 16 items worn only once, and 11 still with the tags on. And one in 20 people has over 50 items in their wardrobe with the tags still on. At the rate that we are consuming fashion globally, <a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.ellenmacarthurfoundation.org/assets/downloads/publications/A-New-Textiles-Economy_Full-Report.pdf">fashion will account for one quarter of the world’s annual carbon budget by 2050</a>.”<br /></div><div><br /></div><div><a rel="nofollow" href="https://www.refinery29.com/en-gb/2017/04/149877/fast-fashion-social-issue">https://www.refinery29.com/en-.....cial-issue</a><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Thread I started:&nbsp;<a rel="nofollow" href="https://youlookfab.com/welookfab/topic/is-fast-fashion-a-class-issue-refinery29#post-2095440">https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....st-2095440</a></div>
