Pockets came in and out and back in style throughout history, and the overwhelmingly significant reason for their absence is how easily they can be concealed, or not, in the fashions of the day. Regency/Empire/Jane Austen style clothing was narrow and softly draped and pockets would have been very unsightly, so handbags came into vogue (and they weren't all tiny and deliberately useless - it was not a male conspiracy). It was just smart. When skirts got fuller and petticoats multiplied, petticoats came back in and bags weren't necessary. Etc. Pockets are present in plenty of my vintage clothing patterns, ironically more in the 1950s - when Dior supposedly said this - because of the full skirts that could support them. There were fewer in the 1930s and 1940s because clothes fit closely or were even bias cut and pockets could not be supported or hidden well. (Oh, and Chanel did not invent menswear for women or jersey or any of the things she claimed she did after WWII.) Sorry for the soapbox!
