Some interesting reads! I was thinking it is such a shame when being ground-breaking means you re-wear an outfit once or twice--but then, that is kind of what breaking ground is--a gateway to more change.

I like Bridgette Raes--I'm gonna tuck in my shirt tonight for the ballgame and not worry that my shirt is not covering my rear, but I reserve the right to untuck whenever I feel like it also! However, I think Bridgette is too hard on John Malloy ( in her post that led up to this more recent one)--the book(s) was "of its time" and I was working on my professional career in late 70's onward, when I think she was in nursery school and onward. So, it's a part of history--no need to revise history. Besides, the web and social media are filled with women telling other women what to where when, how and why--yet they may not have as much fashion savvy as some men--who also are some of the great designers. . Even here, there are no compunctions about advising re: environmental norms, workplace expectations based on the culture of a particular business or industry or occasion.
So, one can take one's fashion advice and mentoring from any number of sources.

No burning at the stake, please.

Very interesting indeed, Brooklyn, thank you. I too didn't know this e.g.:

One lesser-known fact about the Queen’s wardrobe is that after a garment
is no longer needed, the monarch’s dressers had first dibs on it. Then,
it was up to them whether to keep it for themselves or sell it, on the
condition all identifying labels were first removed, according to Brian
Hoey, author of the 2011 book Not in Front of the Corgis.

SF - That was an interesting read too, thanks!

This relates to androgynous dressing, and we did enjoy admiring the Banana Republic models:

https://www.texasmonthly.com/s.....r-grandma/

I love menswear and men's style, but my decidedly curvy figure limits the ways I could emulate it. It was interesting to me to see how men also face the challenge of dressing in your fifties and beyond. Pop-pop vs. grandma? Mr Randle preaches the gospel of good tailoring and keeping fit.

Below is NOT Mr. Randle, but one of my favorite menswear looks EVAH.

Maybe that rabbi, and no disrespect to him he was wise, compassionate, learned and brilliant, meant pants without a fly front. I remember as a teenager in mid-60s all my pants had a side zipper. My father, who was earthy, guffawed when I got a first pair with a fly front. *Why* would a woman need that?

Androgenous dressing to me has always equaled masculine. Think of work uniforms- pants, and button up or polo shirts- or the event t shirts, which are always male style. Women generally don't even get a choice.
That said, I'm glad about Harry Styles, etc, cause more men will feel they have options- though the capitalism factor is obvious to me. Men interested in skirts, dresses, cosmetics, and accessories means big bucks for stores.

Androgyny in clothing/identity presentation, what is it anymore?
I didn't start with this question but ended up here at the bottom of the rabbit hole.

I idly rewatched Jenny Mustard and Justine Leconte comparing Frrench and Scandi/particularly Swedish style. Mustard was keeping far away from anything "girly". Wanted no bows on even her underwear. Stressed the masculinity of Stockholm women's style. The looseness, the practicality, the layering, the beigeness. *But* with bold lipstick. Made me wonder, in general, why modern-ish style labeled androgynous had tended to look so traditionally masculine.

This caused me to check out recommended lists of Scandi and particularly Swedish influencers and they were all a complete negation of this in bold colors and patterns.

And then I found this video where a Scandi woman gives examples of that style - a lot like Coastal Grandmother Winters Over. All of the examples could be worn seamlessly by traditional, semi-normcore guys.
Coastal Grandpa?

I'm old enough that I lived through a 70s unisex era, also featuring clothes that were essentially masculine young people's dress of the era.
There weren't Unisex Dresses on offer!
Some time later, there was a furor in a local modern Orthodox synagogue because women wanted to wear pants to services and Jewish law specifically prohibits dressing in the garments of the other sex (except of course on the Purim holiday, where practically anything goes and drunkenness is mandated ). The rabbi decided that women could indeed wear pants to services so long as they were "women's pants." And what the heck are those?

So, thinking about the construct of this, I found this essay that I really liked.
https://confluence.gallatin.ny.....-style-in-
