I should have dressed up as Edna instead of Cousin Itt at the last Halloween party I attended a few years ago. Another film noir, in which clothing (or lack thereof) really established the evil of a character is Double indemnity with Barbara Stanwyck. The first time she is seen on screen, her character is wearing only a towel looking down from the top of a staircase! A clear sign that she's bad and she calls the shots! Back on topic, I love the descriptions in Raymond Chandler's novels. They're pithy and could be surprisingly detailed. It's an interesting approach, since while other first-person detective/mystery stories from the period (thinking of Nero Wolfe and Erle Stanley Gardner) do describe people, it's still frequently less detailed.
