Thanks for alerting us to this, Carla. I'm furious about how this girl was treated, but it is indeed uplifting to see that something positive and good came out of it.

I'm giving H &M a second look since they have initiated a very ambitious sustainability plan. This knitting machine is brilliant. Can the fashion industry become carbon positive in the future? I am now a bit more hopeful.

And a skirt suit for football games, hah!

Great articles, Shevia and kkards, thanks!

Joy, I am so very sorry for your loss.

Ooh, I forgot the No Tee Shirt rule. The boys' white ones were considered underwear. And we also had the threat of making you stop and kneel to see if skirt touched the floor. I'm sure this motivated me, the first time I saw a miniskirt in college to go right back to my room and drastically shorten all my skirts.

And on football game nights, the members of the team had to go to school wearing a white dress shirt and a tie. My college roommate, who had gone to Miss Porter's School, had to wear lace up oxfords that they referred to as Abercrombies. They looked like golf shoes with a kiltie fringe. I'd love them now, though they looked freakish then. The boys wore sockless loafers, first time I'd ever seen anyone do that. Girls who went downtown for any reason were supposed to wear white gloves. And if you had a date for a football game - and it would be shocking if you went by yourself - you wore a skirt suit. I went everywhere by myself that I wanted to go and this was considered brave, in the What Would People Think sense.

In junior high, I was sent home to change back to a dress when a field trip to the ocean was cancelled. It seems unbelievable now. The next year, in high school, anything was allowed - pants, jeans, mini skirts, etc.

I started high school in 1960 and this was what dress was like. We also had to have our skirt or dress hem touch the floor if we were kneeling so skirts were longer than what was fashionable. There were no stretchy fabrics yet and I do not remember any tee shirts on either boys or girls. In fact even in college boys were looking for girls with an iron who could iron their shirts, usually plaid Madras button downs .

I went to high school in the sixties. Lots of drinking, pregnancies, parents forbidding their kids to date the girlfriend or boyfriend they wanted to, some shoplifting. Before that, when I was in sixth grade there were two girls who were tall and shapely, though no more than 11 or 12, and they were dating sailors.

I'm old, I was in high school in the 50's. We had no actual written dress codes. Pants, jeans, etc. wore not worn anywhere except weekends, home, outdoor activities, etc. Not even to the movies, except drive ins. No one ever questioned things, this was just how it was. You dressed up for church, and other social activities, including Sunday dinners to relatives or such.
Girls wore skirts below the knee because it was the style..Only problem with boys was wearing pants too low-they were called in to the office and made to wear belts. Boys wore flat tops, pegged pants, and jackets and ties to church and social activities. Girls wore short hair, even duck tails-also pony tails. We wore crenlines, cinch waist belts, bobby socks and saddle shoes. No one would even think of wearing anything too tight, or revealing. It made one look like a hussy (whatever that was).
Maybe it was different in cities, but we were small townies.
There were fad things like small neck scarves tied in square knots, white buck shoes, colored wool socks, and maybe a few other fads that were short lived and worn by the popular group.
The only thing adults complained about teenagers was music-Elvis, rock n roll-and smoking.

Far from Angie's Do Your Own Thing, here is a reminiscence and evaluation of high school dress codes. One main message: people tried to control people by trying to control what they wore.

I was definitely subjected to these dress codes - no jeans for boys,
no pants for girls, nothing sleeveless, etc. When I came home from college for Thanksgiving break, I was astonished to see my high
school campus a riot of tank tops and shorts, dress code out the window. Being Southern California, it now all looked like Beach Blanket Bingo.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?.....&t=2s

David Hoffman Has Some Fun With 1950s High School Dress Codes. Did They Work?

He plays it over twice, so only the first @9 minutes.
