I just think of coats as outerwear and they don't necessarily have to go with what is under. I would likely buy a scarf to fill the neckline of the coat.

Wow! I love everyone's suggestions! In a million years I wouldn 't have thought of turquoise with red. But now I'm thinking of it. I have a chocolate brown cardigan sweater and I'll try that. I've ordered the striped sweater, the midnight blue and pewter sweaters.

I love the striped sweater. The second one in pewter would be great too. I also love red with chocolate brown, black or turquoise. If you like animal print (maybe in a scarf), leopard is one of my favorite things to put with red.

I like the Moroccan blue and pewter as well. But I think if you pick the two you mentioned up top, they'd look great.

Yes, I think the pewter would be a good color. I could wear all neutrals, except for the pop of red of the jacket.

I was going to suggest the blue menthol one but if you are more matchy matchy inclined why not a light pewter heather? It would match your hair color and you might find it more harmonious.

I thought the dark blue would look good with jeans, without actually being navy, which isn't a great color on me.
I do have a lot of scarves and was trying to tie together a top and the jacket yesterday. I ended up wearing a pale avocado cardigan and the jacket with a knitted scarf with both of those colors in it. I'm afraid I'm very matchy matchy. Pathetically, actually. This is a closeup of the scarf.

I like both your links and all the suggestions. It's true the first blue might look very preppy. But if you're okay with that, then no worries.

Also...how about scarves? I usually need to fill the neckline of a coat like this anyway with something other than a top, when it's cold out. And you can pick a scarf or scarves in any pattern or colour that works with your coat and pants -- that way you don't have to worry that your tops don't "go."

Alaskagirl, I agree the red and olive look wonderful together. Wendi, thanks for the nautical warning! Now I'm leaning toward the light pewter heather color.

Those are pretty! I actually like the Moroccan blue better for the first one; I think that color would be pretty with red. Also, how about the sort of camel color? I think camel goes well with red. The Midnight blue is pretty, but with the red coat, you'll like quite nautical or like an American flag.

I love red and olive, if you can wear it, and that is not Christmas-y to my eye.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about mixing different shades of red. I've seen lots of that done on purpose lately. Mixing green and red is trickier. I'm not knowledgeable about turtlenecks, so I'll let others address that issue.

I have a classic red Pendleton peacoat that is a good color, good fit, and good quality. I want to wear it with both nice pants and jeans, but have a hard time styling it because nearly all of my tops are either red or a variation of green. (Red and green looks too Christmasy to me.) I finally realized I need some turtleneck sweaters as Angie mentioned in her post.

I found these two sweaters on Lands End. What do you think? I especially like the striped one. I already have a long sleeved top in white with red stripes, but I thought that would look too cutesy with the jacket. I am middle aged with silver hair.

In the blue stripe:
