I'm following this thread with great interest, as I'm moving toward nicer blouses and are terrified of ruining them.

What detergent do you all use? I've been using the regular Tide powder, and my clothes seem to fade color very quickly. I really notice this on my husband's polo shirts.

I have to say as well that the spin speed of the better front loaders can really save you drying time. The clothes come out noticeably dryer, as someone mentioned above.

Another vote for a front loader. I used to always be finding little holes from where things would get caught in the agitator with my top loader, and no longer have that problem with the front loader.

We did a TON of research on this and the best one by far was Asko. They are pricier up front but save a ton of money - if you look at their statistics down the road in terms of water, electricity usage as well as dryer time (clothes come out of the washer almost dry). We have had one that's moved with us across houses and is still going great since 1994. We have bought other Asko appliances since then and can't say enough good things about them. Also, it only uses one eight cup of soap because of the way it's designed - more savings. And it does all types of fabric and delicacy level. Because it doesn't have an agitator, I feel very confident placing my delicates in there without fear of ruining them. If you don't do Asko, at minimum I recommned you do a front and not a top loader.

I have the Maytag Neptune washer and dryer and I love them! I am really picky about clothing (the minute something starts to look "worn" it is gone) and I feel that my front loader has kept most clothing looking newer longer. My husband and son have expensive golf shirts and this machine keeps them pristine.

People always say that front loaders are more gentle on clothes, but that's not actually true. Front loaders are much more energy and water efficient and need less detergent so your operating costs are lower, but they're not actually easier on clothes. I belong to a kids' clothing board and people on there that have them were very disappointed in how the front loader treated their clothes. They had clothes that had been washed multiple times in their old top loader ad still looked new, but one time in the front loader (and it was several different brands, not just one that was bad) left them looking worn and sporting holes that weren't there before they went in the wash. They make top loaders without agitators and those are much more gentle on clothes than front loaders (think about it, they just swish around a little instead of tumbling around).

Sveta, definitely look at front loading washing machines. They are much more gentle on clothing than top loaders. I wish we had sprung for one when we were in the market for a new washer 9 years ago.

Sveta, I had a very similar conversation with my husband too! Our old washer sometimes made little tears in my clothes, and even he realized this was a waste of money. Fortunately the bastard completely broke and we bought a new one.Thus I am freshly researched on the subject. We bought a Miele - it is one of those European style ones, where the barrel rolls over instead of having an agitator, but it is still top loading to save space in our little apartment. They have designed a barrel where there is always a thin coat of water on it so that the clothes are always in water and never in contact with the barrel itself, and this supposedly is gentler on clothes and makes them last this. Apparently they proved this by washing things over and over and over again. At least I have no complaints about my clothes now, and it is much quieter than our older one too. It also has a timer function so that you can load it in the morning and then have the laundry freshly washed when you come home from work so that it doesn't sit wet all day. We also bought a Miele because they have a much better reputation for service if anything is actually broken, which it's not supposed to do for 20 years. When our last, much cheaper washer broke, we realized that the company customer service was horrible. We talked to a lot of repairmen/salesmen and they said pretty much all washers these days are the same, except for Miele, which is better-made, and besides that, the basic difference is the level of service from the company when something breaks. This is all in the context of Germany, of course, but suffice to say I am satisfied so far.

Definitely get front loading machines - they are much kinder to your fabrics.

I have had Maytag Neptune front loading machines for 7-8 years and I really LOVE them (other than how the pants legs get all twisted together - how weird is that!?)

I would love to have a front loader! But I live in an apartment building and use the top loaders in the basement. Front loaders don't have that agitator in the middle that top loaders do, which ends up stretching and pulling your clothes. Front loaders also use much less water, and therefore, you use much less soap. They can be more expensive. The drums look smaller, but you can pack the clothes a little tighter than a top loader. Sometimes I go to the laundromat and use theirs.

When I was in the UK I loved how the people I stayed with had their front loading washing machines under the kitchen counter. Love the glass fronts, too. Why is it so satisfying to watch the suds? I have a thing for laundry, I admit it :). My in-laws have these gorgeous ones by Bosch:

I just bought another washer. We bought a Speed Queen. I did a lot of research. The one thing I decided I didn't want was an automatic water level. I wanted to be able to set that myself. I love it. It does delicates and heavy loads just fine.

I'm in Australia so can't help directly with makes/models but wanted to mention that my mother's washing machine has a dedicated silk cycle (in addition to a delicate and a wool cycle) and I've washed silk items that say 'Dry clean only' in there with no issue at all.

I want a machine with a steam 'refresh' cycle too- ideal for dry clean only things.

...and all other good clothing I have. I really need a new wash machine because my old one just ruins everything!
After all this money I spent on NAS my hubby told me that we need to get a new machine to wash them. I am going to take him on his word and need to decide on the make and model ASAP before he changes his mind!
What I am looking for is a real life feedback on wash machines you use. Any favorites out there?
My requirements are very simple:
- washing well from jeans to delicate fabrics;
- gentle on clothing;
- reliable and repair free.
So does anybody want to vote for the favorite one? I am taking the polls!
