I think your proposed items are perfect. The only item I would discard is the red denim jacket, no need to double up, if space is an issue.

If the last leg of your journey is the most variable, could you perhaps ship some of the items you needed for that ahead of time (to save some luggage space)?

I like the idea someone else mentioned, of posting the no-longer-needed leftovers back to yourself once you're done with them.

I'd echo what the others have said about the emotional aspect of the trip, so I would give priority to packing what makes you feel "good" about yourself. Who says that you can't clean or sort in a nice outfit? Borrow old clothes from your parents for the really dirty jobs.
You may find that the business type of meetings take longer and are more draining that you think. You may find that you have to act as your parents advocate and in dealing with not- too-helpful bankers, doctors etc, if you feel confident and pulled together, you have more energy to push for what you know is right for your parents. Good Luck!

Ok, here is the collection I have created using Angie’s travel capsule as a template. I have only 3 dresses, so I added 2 more skrts and 2 tops instead of 2 dresses. I will also add at least one pair of shorts, one swimsuit and 2 pajamas. How does it look? Is it too much? Am I missing something?

And here is also weather for my first week there.

kkards - that is what I am telling myself. If I only have my documents and my credit card, I will be fine. Few years ago I spent a week in Rome, and my luggage was lost until the last day and I survived just fine, and enjoyed some summer sale shopping.

Suz - sorry to hear that you got sick during your travel. Unfortunately it can happen to us too, so better be prepared. My daughter had it end of April, so hopefully is better protected than me. Most important is that we don’t get it during the first leg, since my mom is on chemotherapy.

Joy - your capsule sounds like a success,
and I agree skirts are very versatile bottoms.
Angie- you are a lifesaver! Yes, this helps a lot, just quantities and types of items are great guideline, and I even have some same or similar items. But I am thinking now if I am too optimistic thinking that I will have enough time to go on a little vacation with daughter at the end? First part of trip will probably take most of the time but hopefully not all 4 weeks.

wow, that's a lot to pack into a short amount of time
this is not going to be very helpful, but i just want to say, take a deep breath and remember that there are stores everywhere, so if you find that you really need something you can always stop and get it. i find just reminding myself of this makes it less stressful
and yes to NancyW's suggestion re old clothes that you can discard after the cleaning chores are done.

Anchie, this is challenging, but you can do it! I would take your own suggestion of bringing a variety for last leg of trip and sending home what you don't need with your husband in the car. So that solves that portion of the problem.

Your style has similarities with Angie's so her capsule should be a goo guideline. I'd bring 2 or 3 skirts if you can, one or two pants, one or two shorts, and two dresses. Denim jacket and dressier topper. Scarves. Tops, of course, in varying levels of dressiness.

Bring Rapid tests, bring wipes and masks!! Be prepared for everything to change if you or daughter get Covid on last leg. Or even symptoms (i.e. another respiratory virus). You can't fly with symptoms so you might have to extend any trip. I was in that position on my recent trip -- I tested negative for Covid but may have had it (tests aren't reliable any more with newer variants) and in any case, I had symptoms so could not fly. Had to self-isolate in a hotel and postpone my return.

You are getting good advice here. I'm sorry to add yet another variable but this sounds like a very emotionally draining trip, so I would make sure to pack items with a high comfort and/or happiness factor. (Not that you need additional items for these purposes but more like: if you are deciding between two skirts pick the more comfortable or happier one even if it is less versatile, better to wear a perfect outfit on repeat and get on with the business you're sorting.)

For the "fun" but less certain/planned parts of your trip, you could just pack the bare minimum for, say, a beach destination and plan to pick up whatever else you need when you're there -- if you find vacation shopping to be enjoyable. That would be a nice treat to look forward to and a fun memory of the more pleasant/carefree parts of your trip later.

I echo, Jules.

COVID - bring lots of masks, sanitizer, wipes, and test kits.

Pack casual and smart casual. Versatile. Easy to launder and forgiving. the weather can turn in Europe, so make sure you pack some warmer things too.

I was in this boat a year ago (July). I stayed in the Netherlands for almost 4 weeks. Attended to my very sick Dad who was in an assisted living facility, had his memorial service while I was there so I brought dressy funeral clothes, cleaned out Dad's flat, saw family, and sorted affairs EVERYWHERE. On top of COVID. I wore dresses, skirts, jeans, pearls, striped tops, and shirts. Wore sneakers and loafers. Brought jackets too. Could wash at my Dad's flat because we were staying there. It worked well. This is almost EXACTLY what I packed - with loungewear and toiletries. It includes my dressy funeral outfit AND travel outfit. Hope it helps a bit!

I just got back from a 20 day trip packed in a carry on. Choose shoes first 2 or 3 pair that will go with everything. Then pick a color scheme. I usually take 2-3 bottoms with a rand of tops and one topper. I wear a money belt under my clothes, so no dresses but skirts. All the airports were a zoo. Many counties are now requiring an N95 mask if you go out. I also wear them inside and in any vehicle and feel safer. This time I did not bring a trench coat but it can be a robe, travel blanket, protect from rain, and more. It was hot so not missed. A beach cover up stood in . I took no jewellery or work out clothes. I took but never wore a swim suit. DH does not swim. He has heavy bones and sinks. Most of my bottoms were knee length skirts which were good for the heat and yet modest enough to allow you in a church. The hard part of packing is with meds. I was stopped twice for insulin in luggage. Airports have really long lines. Be sure to have your passport and vaccination card. Another picture ID like a drivers license is also helpful.

I completely understand your apprehension in packing - I'm currently back in my hometown whilst staying in my parents' house, but also travelling the country to see others & having to take care of all the admin/ banking etc stuff that crops up after having been abroad for 3+ years continuously. Oh & I'm doing this from one suitcase for my international return flights & then also a 1 week mandatory quarantine in a designated hotel (by myself, lol)...

So far, my strategy has been to always pack what I need in emergency clothing/ toiletries overnight in my carry-on backpack (i.e. one set of underwear & pyjamas, plus toothbrush etc).

Then in my suitcase itself, I've given myself 1) a basic uniform of foundation pieces (in my case, that's been 3/4 sleeved cotton tops with looser bottoms that I can sleep & move in - like soft or jogger trousers). And then I add 2) a third completer piece to help dress it up/ bridge it from smart casual to more formal (in my case, this has been a sleeveless belted duster cardigan or lightweight scarf). I imagine your style may benefit from a blazer jacket instead, but preferably a knitted one with some stretch (again, for ease of movement).

Stick to a particular colour scheme to make things easy for yourself (for me, it's been my mostly black UK capsule wardrobe with some pops of red & yellow, like my raincoat).

Good luck, & just remember to make some time for yourself in between all of the hectic activities (for me, this has been deep breathing whilst I'm on the train between places)!

NancyW - I was actually thinking about that, if I can maybe use some of my mom old clothes for dirtiest chores, and not to plan too much for this activities and plan only for out of the house outfits.

Lana - that is great idea, to plan for each day. I would reduce number of casual cleaning outfits, I think I can do with only 2, and plan for more meeting and going out type of outfits because there will be few of those on different days.

Do you keep any old clothing around for messy chores? Perhaps you could bring some pieces that could be discarded after working in your parent’s home. It would free up a bit of space in the car if you did that for all family members.

cat2 - palette would be definitely lot of navy, some white or beige, and accent colors like red and yellow. And I am going swimsuit shopping tomorrow ick! Last time I bought a swimsuit was at least 5 years ago and I need a new one.

Star - I was thinking of something like this, but then when I start choosing the items to fill in the template, I get stuck. For example- if I choose 3 bottoms, one would be a shorts for arround the house and possible beach, second would be pants to have if it gets cold but would probably not get much wear, so it leave a space for only one skirt that I would have to wear constantly for 4 weeks for all the other occasions. 3 dress are good but don’t provide a lot of mix and match possibilities. I would definitely need another skirt, so that is 4 bottoms.

I would imagine a typical week there at your first stop and look at what activities you might be doing each day and plan outfits around that for a week - so 7 or more outfits that can be mixed to create lots more outfits. Add layers for cold possibilities. I usually start with shoes. :)

For example (might not fit your plans):
Day 1-comfy travel outfit, change to casual outfit
Day 2-casual but refined outfit for meetings (dress up an outfit a little), change to casual cleaning outfit later
Day 3 through 6- casual cleaning outfits
Day 7 - beach and out to dinner outfits

So 1 travel outfit coming and going, 6 cleaning outfits, 1 nicer out to dinner outfit and 1 beach outfit. This is just an example but can work really well. However, you’ve got two other very different legs of the trip, so really 3 different small capsules are needed, see if anything in your first capsule can work for the second leg and the third.
