Late to the party here - but I just got to say that I think you made the right decision - LOVE the neckline of #2 on you - and I think its a great idea to keep searching for a sheath, edgier, better quality substitue for #1. Also, am chuckling at your comment about your husband diving headlong into the unfurling lotus . . .

Another one late to arrive here. As one who's had her head in business most of her life, history is rough but are you referring to some sort of papal/church dispute in the middle ages? Martin Luther was the clue! You should try out for Jeopardy Thimbelina/L, you are one clever cookie.

I liked both dresses, but preferred the v-neck dress as that's a great neckline on you. And this dress looks awesome with the military jacket and matching cage heels.

I liked the way the lotus dress looked with the blue sweater. Those are great colors on you.

I think you will get use out of the red sweater from H&M. It's an easy way to add color to any outfit. Have you tried it with pants? I like the way it looks both tied and hanging down.

Final verdict: I kept the wrap dress and returned the sheath. But I learned a lot and they were both "good" dresses. In fact, everything Trix and Angie liked about the sheath was true: it was edgier, more fashion forward, bolder. I decided that I am going to keep looking for just that sort of dress but at a higher price point with better quality materials. That's how a real head turner should be, right? And the little wrap number is just a fun Friday frock for a MOTG. My husband liked both, but preferred the lowcut neckline on the wrap. I'm wearing it with the tomato red cardi I already had and returning the Juicy cardigan. So a total cash outlay of about $25, + the rescue of a wardrobe orphan made this a good day of shopping. Thank you all for your comments. Spanner away at me Angie! I love it! And Trix is positively insufferable now that you and she had matching answers. It's like living with a teenage Rachel Zoe or something. LOL... L

Thank you for your comments Angie. They are always appreciated. Its kind of funny because my 15-year-old daughter is my very brutal but also very accurate stylist in-house. So last night we got home late from her track meet (which was heavy, she's injured and it looks like her season may be over) and she was disappointed I had done the whole dress run-through without her. She wanted a chance to give me her untainted opinion so she relaxed & unwound by combing through my copies of the photos without reading any YLF comments and deemed number 1 her hands down favorite. Then we read Angie's newly added opinion, where she said the very same thing for many of the very same reasons as Trixie. Leaving me literally between Rome and Avignon with two dresses. (History buffs will know what I'm talking about...) So finding myself between Rome and Avignon I would normally go with my own gut. But the whole reason I'm here is that my gut isn't quite trustworthy; it's a reflex I'm unburying from years of inattention to detail. So to keep the Rome/Avignon analogy going, I'm pulling in Martin Luther: that's right, my husband, the guy who pays the bills, the gaze from the other side of the romantic dinner table. I don't usually ask my husband questions about clothing. I view my role as his partner one where I stimulate him visually with fashion choices, personal habits, even underhanded little beauty tricks at which I arrive independently; not one in which I habitually invite him into the proverbial sausage factory to see how it all gets done! But here I think I want his tie-breaker opinion. If he expresses an overwhelming urge to throw darts at my midsection or reads a subliminal message to dive headlong into that unfurling lotus in the crotchical areas, the first dress goes. Period. And if the second one is not his cup of tea it can go too. Because life is short and there are plenty of dresses to go around. Thanks everybody who chimed in. This really was a lot of fun for me at least. Will post the final verdict after this weekend. L

Wow. I am such a spanner!!!

I so prefer dress #1. The sleeves are much more flattering and it's easier to layer over them. The pattern is also more hip and interesting, plus I prefer the fit.

But anyway, sorry to go against the crowd. FWIW

Glad you kept dress #2, it looks REALLY great on you! The first dress has a lovely shift shape though (if you like that shape, some do and some don't), but would also require that the neckline not be so high for you; I wouldn't dismiss looking for a dress in a similar shape with a less ladybits-highlighting pattern

Thimbelina, you look great! The dress you decided to keep was my favorite of the two. The colors are bold, the fit flattering, and you look confident and fab! I think that it looks great with both of the cardigans. I especially like the color of the red one with it, and the fit of the turquoise one.

Also, can I just say, that photo #4 is smokin' hot?!?!?! You have great legs anyway, but that length of dress paired with those nude heels make them look even longer and...greater!

Thanks everyone! While you were posting I put the first dress in my return bag; the second I styled with a few more things from my closet. I think it has that retro, vintage DVF feel too Marlene, and I had the same idea as you! So here it is below:

1) with flat silver sandals and big silver beads, my regular MOTG style...
2) with the previously flummoxing shrug... I like it, even though it is a hotter color contrast than I usually try.
3) with a black jacket and cage heels... maybe not a fave here, but I do loves me a little cage heel somethin'-somethin'now and then...
4) my easter idea, w/ the Juicy cardigan and its adorable gold crown buttons, antiqued pearls and nude stilettos... I like this too (but you won't see me very often in heels this high).

So I decided to keep dress 2 and cardi 2, bringing the total spent to about $65 total. I plan to add some new summer layering tanks in colors that will look good under these two bright cardigans.

Thanks so much! You guys are all so helpful. L

thimblelina, I agree with the others about the first dress. I don't think this pattern can be flattering on anybody. I also think that the higher neckline and the straight up and down silhouette don't do much for you.
The second dress is really, really nice! I was a bit afraid when I read about the neon colours, but no, they are bold but not that bold. The v-neck makes your neck look long and I also like the high waist a lot on you. It's a definite keeper. The cardi is very cute with this, too.

I agree. I like the second dress (pics 3 & 4.) I think the style of the dress is more flattering - the waist definition and the v at the neck.

Same for me. Dress 3/4 looks really great , but I also had some thoughts about dress 1. The colours and size of the pattern are great, but the pattern itsef seems to be a little bit off. To me it looks like the circle in the middle is creating a focus point and the pattern is not draping so well.

Im sorry if this sounds too harsh. Its sometimes difficult to find the right words since english is not my first language.

Oh, and yes, I think you look confident and bold.

And now that you mention it, I'm not entirely sure of how I feel about the lotus flower opening over my ladybits... Arghh! L

You know, my daughter said the same thing when we looked at it on the website together. Then we both decided that IRL it is not so noticeable, but maybe it is just too much of a deal killer on that dress. Too bad, because I was most in the mood for a sleeveless summer dress. Thank you. You always give such great feedback. L

Hi... me again! I am needy these days, aren't I? It's my hungry, hungry closet that I don't want to fill with bummers.

Yesterday I went to JCPenney to try on dresses. That was a hot tip from the always fabulously gorgeous Teri in Texas, and since she strikes me as sort of an IT type with her lovely broad shoulders and wonderful long legs I thought I might get lucky too. I was shocked to find TWO dresses that fit and seemed cute, so I brought them both home to try out with you.

Disclaimer: you might want to set a pair of sunglasses handily near the computer screen. These dresses are bright! Neon bright! Which I normally don't do at all. But I recently got a wrap shrug for free at H&M which is neon bright, so I dug that out of my "limbo" bag. (Yes, in my closet I keep a brown paper limbo bag where discards, thrift store mistakes, etc. reside until I decide their ultimate fate... The shrug was one of those BOGO deals and since my daughter was already up at the register buying her sweater, I spur-of-the-moment grabbed this neon poppy red which I was subsequently afraid I would never be able to style.) The little teal short sleeved cardigan was bought specifically to go with these dresses. All but the shrug can be returned; and the shrug can go to one of my daughters friends if I don't figure out how to wear it properly!

So, the pros: I like how these fit. They are easy to wear from an underpinnings perspective. They are hand washable and never need ironing. They go with shoes and accessories I already have. They have helped rescue an item that might have otherwise had to be discarded. They are inexpensive: $25 & $35 for the two Nicole Miller dresses; $39 for the Juicy cardigan.

Cons: Too bright? Too fitted? Too 'young'? Too similar? Too much like something for the office or church? [Since I go to neither...LOL!] Too discount-brand-looking? Too polyester?

Please, be brutal. I can take it. Bear in mind: I put these on this a.m. after cooking another big breakfast for the 3rd graders who are taking tests this week, so minimal makeup and hair going on here. I'm thinking I'll definitely need a brighter lipstick than the soft red and light terracotta which are my only two at the moment.

The first 4 pictures below show both dresses with and without their cardigan partners; the 5th picture is how I might wear the first dress for Easter with the in-laws.

Shoes: ilver ankh sandals by Sofft; black satin platform heels by Madeline; nude patent platform heels by Guess.

PS -- I didnt' get a chance to read Angie's post on body acceptance yet but I plan to very soon. Let me just say I know my stomach and upper arms are not what they once were. I was pretty lean and mean back in the day and no bikini was too small for that body... I enjoy being outdoors, but I do not do specific targeted "exercise". I regularly walk, hike, garden, bike, and even run with the track kids, but I pretty much eat & drink what I want within reason too. What I hate is feeling like just because I now have a differently proportioned body in middle age it is time for the proverbial burka. But I would love to hear your opinions on this... Please... I encourage it. Do these looks strike you as bold and self-confident, or kind of half-baked and sloppy for me?

Thanks in advance! L
