Well, I am no expert, because I only vaguely know about the seasons. But I do generally know about color families. It looks like you can still definitely do black and grey. But with colors, it looks like earthy jewel tones are best, as opposed to brights. Like olive, hunter green, peacock blue, mustard, mulberry, stuff like that.

Hi Val! I’m so, so sorry to just reply. My entire family has been ravaged by the flu. It’s not healing up fast either. Going on a week and just miserable. I will come back and reply when I have more energy. Though Angie def has you covered!

As for palettes a mix of warm and cool: in some systems those *do* exist. Sci/Art systems have 8 neutral seasons that have warmer and cooler variations in each. The palettes still have boundaries but they are far more nuanced than 4 season systems.

Also, Caygill system does a mix of warm and cool unless the person is extremely warm/cool and cannot tolerate the opposite temperature. Elea Blake has moved away from 12 season Sci/Art. (Darren was originally trained by Sci/Art founder Kathy Kalisz.) They now drape customers to find their best shades in each color family. Such an approach leans more Caygill in my opinion.

I love Elea Blake makeup. I’ve had terrific success with their foundations. And they’ve made me a custom bronzer twice—and each time it’s been stellar! (My skin tone is unusual and challenging to match, and my overtones changed drastically last year after healing from major health issues—so they had to rework my bronzer from scratch.)

Though Elea Blake only drapes in person, I’ve had excellent success with their customer service via FB messenger. You might want to send them the photos of your very best drapes and ask if they will recommend some of their products.

Losing steam now… will try to come back when I’m in land of living again. xo

After reading all your responses I am sure you are a cool winter or spring. Emphasis on cool. When you say cream with a hint of yellow sucks the life out of you that is telling. I too have a pinky skin that burns fairly easily. My difference is I have blue eyes. I too like saturated colours and not murky ones (on me). So in a nutshell you are not strictly cool and can wear some warm colours/tones too. Your choices going forward sound spot on. Do look at cool brights later as I think these really make you glow.

Jaime, oh thank you so much for bone structure comment, it is so nice to hear ! I start to see first evidence of my face heading south, hopefully it will hang on on my bone structure just a little longer. But well… this is not the most unpleasant thing that can happen with aging , so I won’t complaint

Angie, thank you so much !!!
Out of this exercise I feel navy is my best color too. I just thought funny how navy and ruby red are my pyjama colors, meaning they are flattering even without makeup, done hair, any accessories - doing all the work by themselves.
I am reading all about cool winter.
I think I will concentrate on getting basics in navy, and light stone mostly, then basics in dark cool brown if I find them, and very dark eggplant (realistically this will probably be the hardest color to find).
And try to mix what I have with these. Then see to expand the colors into cool bright side.

Star, thank you for the answer! You too find warm colors to be flattering, that is reassuring , I was completely off not knowing if warm or cool colors are better. I always thought about myself as winter, by description, but looking at the provided examples often thought I look more like spring but with dark hair , then it all got even more confusing when I saw not 4, but 12 or 16 season systems, where some summer tones looks good too.
I like both gold and silver and wear both, also pink gold.
I used to look great in optic white, and I still like it best in te mirror but not on photos. Slightly off white but on the cooler side is more forgiving on camera. Cream with a yellow hint suck all the life out of me.

I also think colour theory only goes so far.

I think you could wear almost all the colours shown - orange was the one I found the least harmonious.

What I sort of do - is avoid a few colours that I don't feel suit me at all
- pale blue, chartreuse, cool lemon, cold pinks, icy colours, murky colours.

There are colours that are not my best but I still like and wear them - black being the main one.

There are a few palettes that span cool and warm. As a bright spring, I feel I can wear all the spring colours. I can also delve into some autumn colours and the bright winter palette. In the most part the darker winter and autumn, cooler winter and the summer colours are harder for me to wear.

First of all, you look beautiful -- with such great features you can probably wear just about anything!

But, like many others here, I think you shine brightest in cool colours with a relatively high intensity but not the extreme intensity, perhaps, that a (so called ) "true" winter might wear. Still, I'd say winter of some description, if you want a seasonal name for it.

I''m with Angie on the specifics and in general think you have good instincts, so why not go with those? Trust your feelings. Colour is contextual. Having said that, they used to say that orange and/ or mustard yellow was the surest test. If you can't wear orange or mustard, you are definitely some kind of cool. (Waving at my fellow non-orange wearers.)

Pirouette, it’s interesting how you prefer warmer colors! Do you also like warmer colors for yourself? I like some warm tones too—not all, but definitely some. Sometimes, I struggle to decide whether I like a color just for itself or if it actually suits me.

My natural hair is a cool dark brown, but it’s very porous, so dye washes out quickly and leaves copper undertones. I try to fight it as much as I can, but the closer I get to my next hair appointment, the more orange it becomes, unfortunately.

I tried going gray (I now have about 30–40% gray hair) and fought for two years, but I finally surrendered. My undyed gray hair is very coarse and impossible to style without very hot tools, which damage it and accelerate an already dingy yellowish tone. I was not blessed with silky silver grays!

CJH, my favorites are pure, juicy colors—both warm and cool—as well as cool neutrals. I feel I look best in darker colors without gray or brown overtones. That said, I also like cool corals, for example. I’ve also noticed that what works for clothing doesn’t necessarily work for makeup in terms of color.

Light and seasonal changes are definitely important! Thankfully, where I live, the light is always the same—bright and full-strength during the day. Nighttime and artificial lighting are a whole different story; I wish I could live by candlelight!

I tan very easily despite taking protective measures. With a tan, my palette expands—whites, for example, look much better. But I would prefer to keep my winter skin tone. It gives me less room for maneuver, but when I get a color right, it’s really great.

Staysfit, I am not 100% convinced about the accuracy of color theory either. What bothers me most is that there are no mixed palettes of warm and cool tones. Like any categorization system (such as body types), it doesn’t account for the full variety of human bodies and faces. However, it can still be useful as a starting point—it groups by similar characteristics, not identical ones, but similar.

I think I can differentiate between very bad and very good colors for me, regardless of season typing. What got me into this question was seeing Ket’s very cohesive wardrobe and her mention of palettes. I would love to be able to put outfits together without having to think too much about what matches with what. When I add makeup (which is almost always), it gets even more complicated.

It’s interesting that you have been typed into several different seasons! I wonder how you coordinate your colors—do you have a neutral "glue" color, or do you decide on a case-by-case basis? Also, thank you for mentioning Elea Blake—I’m going to dive in!

I have nothing to add with Angie's excellent assessment! But I do find color theory interesting.

I have no idea what season I am but I did learn about this rule of thumb years ago and still try to apply it when I'm undecided about a color of a top. If I hold a color up near my face, close my eyes, then open them, where did my eyes go first, to my shirt or to my face? That has often helped me to pick colors (for tops anyway).

I will say that make-up, a summer tan, and changing the color of one's hair, will certainly affect which colors work best.

You've gotten great advice here and I totally agree you are a classic winter (lucky duck!)! I will just add that most people need to tweak their palette a little ... so if you are not feeling great in the brightest colours let's say - I say just skip them.

Also, I am a cool-toned person with some warmth in my eyes and hair - I find it enables me to add a *touch* of warmth to my cool palette (e.g. I wear gold earrings); maybe your warm eyes will enable you to play in this way too!

I like best rich saturated colors, both warm and cool, if I had to choose then cool, but it is not easy to find clean dark cool high chroma color
My cryptonits are pale salmon and medium apple warm green.
But then olives are good, go figure.
From reds I prefer ruby/berry colors, tomato red is not my best friend.
I can wear browns, but vibrant ones like terracotta or rich cool chocolate. Colors with a brownish undertone - no.
The same with grays - pure gray I can do, both cool and warm, colors with a gray overcast (the ones often recommended to summers)-no.
Purples are tricky - rich cold lavender yes, pale lavender no. Dark cool purple yes, bright mid tone warm purple no.
Pinks - many of them, surprisingly I can do muted warm ones, and clear cold ones, but also dark fuchsia. And then in the middle of it a light cool almost neon pink that kills me.
Oranges no, except persimmon.
Beiges - cold only.
Both gold and silver have place in my heart.
I kind of know what colors are good on me, but it is all over the place. No cohesiveness in the wardrobe what so ever, so it is hard to put together an outfit. If I add makeup to the mixture, it is even harder.

Jenni, professional opinions will almost always differ. In the medical field too, as you well know ;) - it's par for the course! Sometimes opinions are polar opposite. You have to go with what feels the best in your head and heart.

My opinions here, are based on my experiences as a professional in the industry (for 33 years now). I have clients with Val's complexion so it's familiar.

Your best colours are based on:

colour threory

what you wear WITH colours

which colours you enjoy wearing

Marry these three things and you have a palette.

OK Angie so we do think the opposite! Sorry about that Val! Angie is bound to know more than me on this. You’ll get lots of opinions out of the forum!
Staysfit’s experience is a bit concerning having been professionally typed several different ways…

Angie your comment under Blacks, Greys, White. Do you mean she does or doesn’t need #2? I don’t think #2 suits her complexion but I can’t tell if you think the same as me or opposite, it’s not obvious to me from your comment.

You have lovely skin and great features.

I see you as cool - I like the darker blues and greens, the richer reds, the purple and most of the blacks and whites. Clear colours were my preference over the softer ones. The clarity makes you sparkle.

I had my colours done last year and was typed as a Bright Spring. I sort of follow it - I now walk past the muted clothes in a shop quite easily. I suspected I was a bright spring or warm spring when I went in - I am a bit more neutral than I thought and the clear colours helped me more than the warm.

The first thing I notice is the difference between pics 1 and 2 in your original group. Pic 1 shows up your eyes and lovely pink cheeks but pic 2 makes you look sort of yellow-ish and what I call “sallow”. (An old-fashioned word which I need to look up exactly what it means!)
I need to think more about what this difference suggests for whether warm or cool colours are better.

You look beautiful, Val! Fun draping exercise, and thanks for posting :)

My 2 cents:

First of all, you cannot see colours in isolation, which is why this type of draping is only part of the picture, and not set in stone. Colours affect one another. So does make-up. It's a starting point at best.

Second, I like cool tones on you. By far, to my eye!

Third, I think you look better in solid navy and charcoal, than solid black. Textured black if it's solid, might be good too.

Blacks, Greys, Whites = #3 and #4 are best. I think you need a cool white and not a warm cream. So #2.

Blues = #1, #3, #5,# 7, #8, # 9 look AMAZING!

Greens = #2, #4 are fab. #5 if you wear a little make-up. You look better in blues than greens. That is typical for cool toned complexions.

Purples = ALL OF THEM. Absolute slam dunk!!! Best of all.

Red, Oranges, Yellows, Beiges = #6, #7, #14, #15, #16 are great!
#12 and #17 with some makeup.

You are a Cool Winter. No doubt in my mind, Val! We have lots of cool Winters on YLF so you're in good company.

For context, I'm a Warm Spring, so polar opposite is many cases. (My dark blonde hair is natural so not dyed, and I have green eyes). I look good in sour, acidic, clear brights. I can wear neon. But I also wear cool white and navy well. I don't wear black, grey, purples, olive, teals, greyed tones, or muddy colours. I can wear blush pink and a saturated light blue. I wear cream and tan well, and toffee is a good earth tone on my too. Chocolate I wear as a texture and pattern - not a solid.

Hope that helps!

Looking at your pics I would say winter or spring. So a little bit to the cool side. But you don't look bad in warm colours. Sounds like you are both. Lucky you. I was always a bit more on the cool side but could wear most warm colours and gold well too. Now my hair is toned copper blonde I am enjoying warm tones. Only when my hair was natural silver I was strictly cool. I can see when I look off in a certain colour. I think you look very alive and striking in the bright pink, sea green and turquoise, hence I see maybe a Spring. But probably a Bright Spring. So Blues 3, Greens 3 and the last batch 4. Personally (probably my screen colour too) I don't think the Purples are as good for you. I wonder if they are warm purples? Usually deep purple suits a winter so this observation could knock winter out of my deduction. Do you feel good in gold or silver jewelry? Do you prefer wearing optic white or creamy white?

I like the warmer tones on you. I would see your hair and eyes as warm and your skin as cool but I am no expert. As Stayfit mentioned this is not an exact science and I have been classified differently by various people. I think when you put on a colour ask does it make you feel good and if it does then wear it.
