Thank you all. There are so many products for me to sample—the narrowing-down is really helpful! I may try some of the cleansers from companies that are good at moisturizing, if those products also moisturize, so I can do it all in one step. Otherwise I don’t see a need to “fix” what I do now. My skin seems perfectly happy, except for an occasional pimple. My goal is not to add a complicated routine to my day, nor to start wearing make-up beyond my current concealer, lipstick, and occasional eyeliner/shadow. I think I can expect myself to handle a simple moisturizer, so that’s where I want to start.

Interesting discussion of “natural” vs “corporate” products. I don’t really want to call out peoples names here. Germany does have a huge “bio” goods industry, one that blurs the lines dividing those two camps. I think Weleda is a decent example.

La Ped, interesting about the pillowcases! I’ve known for years that I need to find good satin pillowcases for my son’s hair. Wanting them for my skin might be the thing that pushes me to finally do it. I’ll look for real silk; other kinds of satin make me sweat in that weird way.

Hylauronic acid are what Shiny warned about in the carryons post. I think I’ll just avoid them.

I used to give my son a bath with colloidal oatmeal when fire ants had attacked or his skin was otherwise irritated. Probably a good thing to remember in case any of my experiments set my face on fire.

Again, I thank you all for the outpouring of info on this topic. I would say that you’ve saved me hours of research/rabbit hole running, but we all know that in truth I never would’ve gotten there, to my skin’s detriment. So I truly appreciate the suggestions and especially the discussion, which helps me think through the different ideas.

Yes once your face gets too dry then pure oil won't help, it will need some kind of humectant, though if the environment is also dry you have to be careful with hyaloronic acid. Because it will irritate it more as no water in the atmosphere, so will pull out of your skin. I kept trying hylauronic acid serums and they really made my face worse. I even (luckily) managed to get the very a sample of the VERY expensive Dr Sturm one that everyone raves about. Nope, face also didn't like that. So I actually found my son's natural eczema cream had urea and no hyaloronic acid in it. It helped a lot to get it back to a somewhat normal state.

https://www.lovelula.com/produ.....ream-150ml

This one. I'm not sure why they mention it may sting as it is really gentle. Unless they changed the formula recently...neither my son nor I had any problems with it at all and nearly everything makes my face hurt. But then again, its really individual. You have to find out which ingredients your skin doesn't like.

Unfortunately many "natural" products have far too many ingredients.

Ooh, I forgot about pillowcases, great point LaPed! Pillowcases definitely make me break out so I finally caved and got one that has “pages” that give you a clean sheet every day for a week. https://getdeja.com/

I am yet another member of Team Sensitive Skin. As far as doctors can tell, I'm not allergic to anything in particular, but I deal with bouts of eczema from time to time (seems to be mostly related to indoor air quality and stress, but it's a moving target).

The only thing that helps reliably is colloidal oatmeal, so I use Aveeno lotion every day, and never put soap or foaming cleansers on my face. I've used a lot of Eczema Foundation approved cleansers over the years, from the expensive French ones to the no-frills drugstore brands, and they all seem to work about the same. I've been on the same value-sized bottle of Cerave for what seems like an eternity. I only use it if I've put on sunscreen or makeup during the day, and wash my face once a day rather than twice. For me it seems to come down to "disturbing the lipid barrier" as little as possible.

I wish I could do like Synne and use straight oils on my face. I've tried a slew of them -- rosehip, almond, apricot, argan, jojoba -- and they all seem to irritate or congest my skin. I can use oils on the rest of my body; I've actually been using a homemade calendula oil, like Gillian Pearl describes, on and off all winter. It's very nice for arms and legs, but my face doesn't like it. I think it probably comes down to needing a humectant, something that draws moisture into your skin cells, which oil can't do. (I also went down the oil-as-cleanser path for a while but couldn't really get it to work for me, although I was very excited about it in theory!)

Oh -- I also switched from cotton pillowcases to silk years ago, mainly because dry Nevada air and hard water was making my hair impossible, but the side benefit is that my skin stays better hydrated too. Highly recommend!

It really is individual for everyone. It depends on what you are allergic to. I was similar to Synne until recently, just splash with water and then dab of oil but this winter it wasn't enough at all and my face was hurting so much from being dry. I started to research skincare. My face is also incredibly sensitive, didnt like that roche posay ones which are meant to be good for sensitive skin, yet seems fine with essential oils. I think it doesn't like hyaluronic acid though. Anyway detoxmarket is a good one, and from the UK I use naturisimo.com and lovelula.co.uk both ship for free world wide.
I also like pai as Gillian mentioned. I think its a good place to start and they might send some samples.

You do need sun protection every single day even if it isn't sunny so do find a good one. It might just be trial and error. I really like oils and balms and oil serums for my face, especially during winter. I'll add some of my skincare finds. All are vegan, cruelty free most are organic. All but the lip balms are in glass packaging too. You definitely don't need all these products (I went down a YouTube rabbit hole but am actually enjoying my skincare routine now). There are sooo many good quality natural products on the market today. I chose to stay away from ones with too many essential oils just in case. Oh I also tried those expensive May Lindstrom ones, i'm not a fan. They smell awful and I normally like essential oil smelling stuff. They don't seem to do much either.

Helena, my mom has the same problem! I think it’s because she’s mildly allergic to the plants used in a lot of the natural stuff. I definitely avoid some of it as well even though it works for others. Like coconut oil - it clogs my pores something awful. For “chemicals” (said with a laugh because really everything is chemicals) I appreciated the very clear formulations and good prices of The Ordinary! https://theordinary.deciem.com/us

When I was living in Germany, I noticed that lanolin is an ingredient that is often added in natural creams of German brands - you may want to watch out for this ingredient as it can cause a reaction for sensitive skin.

I am a big fan of Argan oil as well as Sea Buckthorn oil, they are great for my dry skin!

Avene, Caudalie, Jonzac and Weleda are very good brands for sensitive and dry skin. Hope it helps!

More love for Aveeno, Cetaphil, CeraVe and LaRoche Posay (which is the only sunscreen I can use on my face, the mineral one).

FWIW, the so-called "natural" products are the WORST for my skin allergies ... if it has enough chemical properties to do anything at all, it has enough chemical properties to irritate sensitivities ... for my skin, give me the mega-tested chems please!

Oh, and one more note. I know everyone has suggested drug store products, and your hippy side may be rebelling. My experience is that the hippy products are really bad for my face because they go heavy on fragrance, which they call essential oils. I use them on my legs, which is the only part of me that can stand the fragrance, and use drugstore or Kiehl’s for my face.

I'm not a big experimenter with facial stuff, so I'll leave the specific recommendations to other Fabbers - and looks like they've provided plenty of good advice!

I also wish I had started with moisturizer much earlier in life. Always had oily skin & acne, and back in the 70's - 80's used harsher scrubs and drying products. Which most likely irritated it, causing more oil production!!! Now post-menopause, so everything's different.

But body skin has always been dry - I like Lubriderm Sensitive Skin - even on face. Aveeno products too. And Neutrogena.

When I was a working girl I splurged once on La Mer - pricey but luscious!

However, my big advice is, since you sunburn easily and are planning to wear bikinis in Florida - try to find body products that have significant SPF quality - or else ditch the bikini and wear SPF clothing.
I'm very pale and burn easily - and am also on medications that make me more sensitive. If I wear short sleeves in summer, I add Coolibar arm sleeves/hand protectors. They make swimwear, coverups, and hats too. I use a Neutrogena SPF lotion on my face.

Got a few bad burns in my foolish teenage years and have lived to regret it: just diagnosed with a squamous carcinoma on my thigh - small and easily removed, fortunately.

You lived in Florida for several years I think? So you know this stuff - pardon for the semi-scold!

I was told to only change one product in a routine at a time, and if it seems to be going ok to wait a month to see what it does to your skin. It takes 4-6 weeks for acne to develop or clear up. So you may be in for a long haul here. I would start with one of the recommended cleansers, as getting that step right twice a day is really important. After you are set on a cleanser, then add an all over moisturizer step. I use mineral sunscreen as well, but prefer CeraVe to LRP. I find French products, unless they advertise otherwise, go heavy on fragrance. Oh, and I would stay away from face scrubs until you see how your skin reacts to a stable routine.

I get zits around the same spots as you do, but I have had good luck with switching to a very limited routine without many products. I only like to use “green, clean, vegan, eco, natural, organic” products (though I know those definitions aren’t well regulated). The stuff costs more upfront but has lasted a long time, and I’ve saved money on not trying a bunch of things that end up breaking out my skin. Here’s what I do:

To wash off makeup and sunscreen: oil cleanser has been surprisingly effective for my skin. I use Kahina’s because I got it in a sample box, but there are many kinds out there. https://kahina-givingbeauty.co.....l-cleanser

For skincare: Mostly just the Bioregenerate oil I’d mentioned to you before. I did just order a moisturizer from Pai as well, but it hasn’t arrived yet. I’ve read that it’s best to use a moisturizer in the morning and an oil before bed so that’s what I’m going to try. https://www.paiskincare.us/pro.....nerate-oil

Pai offers a free phone consultation to help you plan a routine: https://www.paiskincare.us/pag.....nsultation

For face sunscreen: I have Coola spray & Mychelle serum. https://coola.com/collections/sunscreen-face & https://www.mychelle.com/colle.....non-tinted

For cuts, bad breakouts, rashes, really dry spots, and the like: calendula oil. I used to work for a CSA farm where we all got hooked on the heal-anything powers of calendula oil. I think you can actually make your own pretty easily, but so far I just buy it from folks on Etsy. If I could only have one thing for my face I would pick calendula.

As far as shopping, I don’t know if these sites ship to you but they may be helpful even just to browse options:

Nemosmom, thanks for the tip! This is the first I’ve tried this sort of thing. I’ll have to remember to go slowly with any changes, maybe take breaks between product trials.

Synne, how dare you question my hippie cred, you hipster whippersnapper ;). I’ll have you know Dr B’s came with the best “weird” credentials when I started using it in Austin, Texas, although I’ve only used it on my face for a year or two. The method you describe with the rapeseed oil is something I’ve done with baby oil on my legs. Interesting to think of only using oil, no cleanser, on my face! What do you do on days when you don’t shower?

Jenn, you and Synne must be in cahoots

Jenn, StyleFan, Glory, Vildy, sounds like Cetaphil has to go on the list! Thanks.

Irine, Vildy, Glory, and StyleFan, I’ll give CereVe a try too. I know my dad’s derm recommended the body lotion for him.

StyleFan, that Avene you use is one of the things the pharmacist here suggested I try. It’s a global market!

Doro, I have used and really like a body scrub with just coffee grounds and yogurt. I’ll have to give your mixture a try too. Thanks! And yes, I wash my face every morning and night, and change sheets and towels weekly.

Irene, yes, I avoid those ingredients, was wondering if there were other known trouble-makers that people might spot in these labels.

I also have sensitive skin and a lot of allergies, and LUSH's products have been great. E.g. I use their "Dream Cream" on everything and it is just the right amount of moisturising and not too oily. My boyfriend uses it too, for his face and bald head.

Also, I mix a peeling from brewed coffee grounds, brown sugar, olive oil and honey every now and then and use it on my face and body in the shower. Before, I had the LUSH "Ocean Salt" peeling but didn't like the salty taste.

Have you tried mixing something yourself, so you have control over all the ingredients?

ETA: Regarding pimples - they are mostly gone for me ever since I religiously wash my face in the morning AND evening, and very regularly change towels after one week and bedding after two weeks at the latest. Hope that helps too.

When I lived in Germany I always bought and used raw, organic Grapeseed oil (yes, from the food isle). It is the best oil for my sensitive, acne prone skin. It even has UV-protective abilities. The oil is not available in my home country (at least not for my wallet), so here I use Argan or Hemp oil. Also good oils. My point is, oils are the bomb! I am surprised you aren't into them already. I assumed you where more of a "hippie" than me I wash my face with water only, and apply oil immediately after wash/shower, while the skin is still damp. The oil is completely absorbed by the skin, no residue. You can apply make up over as normal.

Proper skincare consists of 3 equally important parts: cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection. Often problems like pimples might be caused by trapping bacteria under creams. Sensitivity is another issue. You need to know your skin to avoid certain ingredients. General suggestion is to avoid alcohol, parfum and essential oils.
CeraVe or Vanicream are good starting points. Establishing morning/evening routine is extremely important. There is a lot of good info online. I suggest you to watch Dr.Dray YouTube, she is a dermatologist from US, hugely popular.

Echoing the Cetaphil suggestion. They do make specific facial moisturizers, but the normal stuff works fine, too, if you want something light. Put it on your whole face and neck. Ironically, moisturizing can help acne. Sort of like how if you wash your hair less, your scalp eventually stops producing as much oil, if you moisturize regularly, your face stops trying to overcompensate for being dry.

Here's an odd suggestion: I tried this after I read about it and it works for me. Spread some old fashioned Ponds Cold Cream on your face at night, cover face for a minute with wrung out hot washcloth, rinse off with warm/hot water, pat dry. Next morning you wake up with a glow.

FT, I have extremely sensitive skin. I have not had acne or pimples. My skin is not oily or dry—just regular normal. I am prone to reactions, eczema, etc.
This is what works for my skin.
I use Avene products, Cetaphil facewash, CerVe PM moisturizing lotion, LaRoche Posay Tolerane facewash and cream from the dermatologist for eczema. I also use mineral sunscreen daily. I find a mineral sunscreen is less irritating to my skin.
I put the CerVe all over my face.
I change my facewash depending on the weather and the season. I never change the moisturizing lotion.

One thing I like about Cetaphil - the cleanser and not the moisturizer that I haven't tried - is that it can be just wiped off without rinsing. Occasionally even what's in the water can be irritating.

Have you tried A2 milk? At my house, Lactaid doesn't work but A2 does. I also use Silk Oh Yeah, an oatmeal milk that actually tastes like milk.

Now here's an odd thing about moisturizer - you know how everybody complains about mineral oil/petrolatum, there's a creamy vasoline (I've used off and on brands) that has the advantage that so far as I know "vasoline" is the only thing that will actually strengthen skin.

Idk if this belongs here or in off-topic, trust that it’ll be moved if necessary.

While some people are working to clear out samples, I’m collecting them. I’m looking for moisturizer for my face. I’ve never used anything like this, but am old enough I should probably start.

I’ve been very hesitant, because I’m prone to zits along my jawline, chin, and on my temples, don’t need more. The skin on my face doesn’t feel particularly oily or dry to me, but I’ve got laugh lines for sure, plus whatever those lines around the mouth are called. Does the moisturizer just go on the wrinkly parts, or everywhere?

I also hesitate because I have so many allergies/sensitivities that I usually draw a huge circle around cosmetics & stay away. I sunburn easily. The last time I had an allergy prick test, I reacted significantly to every single serum except the control. Gluten sometimes can be bad for me, and when things get really crazy, even corn & rice can make me throw up. I usually drink a lot of milk, but right now, even lactose free low-fat milk offends my stomach (& my son’s nose, if I drink it anyway). Sorry if that’s tmi. It’s just my usual life.

Advice on what ingredients of moisturizers tend to cause reactions in people with sensitivities would be much appreciated, because idk anything about this. I use dye-free, unscented shampoo & conditioner, laundry detergent (no fabric softener please), and cleaners. The Dr Bronners I use on my face (& everywhere) is pure Castile soap with very simple fragrance that is ok for me so far. Most fragrances are products of plants that sound lovely, but once they are extracted, concentrated, and otherwise processed, some of them can become things I’d rather avoid. To be responsible, I should look up everything on these lists. I’m hoping some of you have done that homework already and will (ahem) “share” your work. Any knowledge you’ve gained on specifics of this stuff or where to look it up would be awesome.

Here’s the story so far.

1 & 2 Inexpensive moisturizer from the drug store. Felt surprisingly light going on, but after a couple days, there was an unpleasant tingle. I think continued use would’ve led to a bad reaction. It’s out.

3 & 4 Now I’m trying Weleda Almond Creme. If I eat too many almonds, I react negatively, but this seems ok so far. Only a couple ingredients, but I’m not sure where/how to use it. I started out smearing it all over my face (except for forehead, chin, nose). I started getting a couple pimples on one cheek, am now just putting it on the laugh lines & cheekbones. Is that enough? I don’t want wrinkly cheeks when I’m old, but don’t want pimples now either.

5 & 6 products the pharmacist recommends, from the same company as my son’s dermatologist recommended acne cream.

7-10 masks I plan to try out on a poolside “spa day” with my family.

11 I tried to get a sample of this yesterday, at a store their website says carries it. Cat2 recommended it. The store says they don’t carry it. I may try again in the US, but the long list of ingredients is intimidating. Most sound harmless, but if I didn’t know better, I’d think “high fructose corn syrup” was natural too. List of ingredients from Kiehls website: Aqua/Water PVP, Propanediol, Behenyl Alcohol, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Isoamyl Laurate, Mangifera Indica Seed Butter/Mango Seed Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii Butter/Shea Butter, Butyrospermum Parkii Oil/Shea Oil, Pullulan, Arachidyl Alcohol, Euphorbia Cerifera Cera/Candelilla Wax, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Coco-Glucoside, Paeonia Suffruticosa Root Extract, Scutellaria Baicalensis Root Extract, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil/Sweet Almond Oil, Hibiscus Esculentus Seed Extract, Sodium Polyacrylate, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Arachidyl Glucoside, Ethylhexylglycerin, PEG-100 Stearate, Glyceryl Stearate, Alpinia Galanga Leaf Extract, Sodium Polyacrylate Starch, Pentylene Glycol, Hydrolyzed Opuntia Ficus-Indica Flower Extract, Phenoxyethanol, Adenosine, Tocopheryl Acetate, Eclipta Prostrata Leaf Extract, Pelargonium Graveolens Oil/Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil, Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, Faex Extract/Yeast Extract, Citronellol, Xanthan Gum, Citrus Aurantium Amara Leaf/twig Oil - Bitter Orange Leaf/Twig Oil, Juniperus Virginiana Oil, Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, Geraniol, Linalool, Lavandula Angustifolia Oil/Lavender Oil, Corallina Officinalis Extract, Curcuma Longa Root Extract/Turmeric Root Extract, Elettaria Cardamomum Seed Oil, Salvia Sclarea Extract/Clary Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Ocimum Basilicum Flower/Leaf Extract - Basil Flower/Leaf Extract, Dipteryx Odorata Seed Extract, Cistus Ladaniferus Leaf/Stem Extract, Coumarin, Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, Citral, Rosa Damascena Extract, Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract, Tocopherol, Citric Acid. Fmla 942086 1 F.I.L. Code D210719/1

Note: product names often include “Feuchtigkeit” which means “moisture”; the ingredient lists are in English.

Thanks for your help!

PS The young & acne-prone will not be left out of spa day; #12 is for them.
