how is the fold at the bottom when you stand? I dislike the rising leg look too, when sitting so I allow extra scrunch when standing to compensate. welcome to ylf!

This forum is so nice to a new member. Thank you all for your responses, I read every one.

Thanks for explaining about the whiskering and folds. I have noticed it on pants that are too tight on the hips and both too short/too long in the rise. I think they might whisker slightly differently for those problems. I'm starting to pick up on those.

I know some change in pant length is expected when sitting but I feel it is jarring to see my shins. It's like how JulieJohn described. I usually go for straight leg styles but I'm going to test out tapered ones to see if it happens with those too.

Well, there's whiskering, which are horizontal pull lines...that's too tight across the area where the pulls are. Too high/low a rise will either create a sag at crotch level or pull lines that are more angled than straight across. Generally, pull lines point towards the fit problem. Folds indicate too much fabric vertically.

Nodding my head with Mo -- I also have a long rise and pants that are too short in the rise will whisker unattractively. I've also seen it when they are too LONG in the rise, paradoxically! Oh, and you are not the only person who finds pants tough to fit, by the way. It's really quite an art!

As someone else with more rise than torso, I can attest that a pant rise too low for you will sometimes create the whiskering as well.
Agree with Suz that I'm not sure the leg rising when seated is an issue. This happens to all of us. Look at any interview with a man in a nice, expensive tailored suit and you will see it happens to him as well.

Whispering means the pants are too tight at the hip. The wrinkles point to the problem spot. Som whiskers are unavoidable, particularly with close fitting pants in stretch fabric.

Do you follow Angie's guidelines about the proper length for dress pants?

Hi, Donutty! I never really thought about it but pants do that, don't they? It makes me think about Star Trek. I used to think Captain Kirk's boots were ankle boots, till he sat down and I saw they went all the way to his knees. Sorry, geek moment. In any case, perhaps it can be minimized somewhat if the pant material is more fluid and falls against the leg. I imagine a stiff-legged jean would rise up more, but that's just a guess.

Now the whiskering and sloppiness in dress pants, I know of what you speak. Here is a link to what our fearless leader, Angie, has to say on the topic:
http://youlookfab.com/2013/02/.....and-jeans/

Let us know what you find out! Your experiments will interest us, for sure.

It's normal for pants to rise up some when you sit down. Different styles and cuts will do it to varying degrees, but this in itself is not a problem. Just make sure your footwear and/ or socks are worth showing! :-)

Hi I've been struggling to get better fitting clothes all my life. Thanks to this website I've figured out some things like longer rise and short torso. My poorly fitted dress pants makes me look sloppy no matter what I spend. I often have whiskers around the crotch. My most confusing problem is this: the pants are too long or just right when standing but when I sit down, the pants rise well above my ankles. What could possibly be causing this problem? I want to know what to ask for in alterations because whenever they alter my pants so that they look good while I stand, I look ridiculous sitting.

Thanks so much for your help or any advice you might have.
