I knew I would get great suggestions here!
Liesbeth, I often do wear a cap when at the lake and I think I will continue to. I’m not so worried about what my hair will look like when swimming or on the water, but really do want it to look nice and “styled” when not in or around the water.
Helena, Taylor, Jamie , Joy, Minaminu and Madeline thank you for your thoughts on the bob. It may be shorter than I usually go, it I will be really happy to get rid of the discoloration. Who knows? I may really like the length and decide to keep it shorter.

Phoebe, I like the way you think. I know I can make adjustments and if I have any misbehaving hair....good chance of it when it is wet and humid...I will deal with it, or wear a hat.

Star, the bob won’t be long enough to pull all of my hair into a ponytail, especially if I go with a stacked bob. It will be long enough to do a half up style to keep the front pieces from falling into my face when I am being active.
Suz, you are right about the water. We have a lot of minerals in our water and have filter systems in both our home and at the lake. We may find that a clarifying treatment will be needed from time to time.
Thank you, Angie! I will post pics.
Carla, I like the inspection pictures you shared. I love the curly haired one! My hair is not quite as curly....more like a strong wave with a tendency to frizz (which is why I like the Brazillian Blowout). I have not yet seen what my gray hair will do without that treatment....will it be more wirey? Will it curl more? I guess we will see. By cutting my hair shorter, the last of the Brazillian Blowout will be cut off, too.
Madeline, that is a fun fact. My stylist said I could use blue Dawn dish liquid once a month, to remove the yellow. I only did that once. It worked, but it made my hair quite dry. Surely there are better products out there.
Robin F, have fun at your appointment! Please post pics! No matter what style I end up with, I am going to be happy to be rid of the discolored sections.

Yeah I think a bob as short as you can stand it. I get mine cut next week for the first time in 3 months (or maybe 4?) and plan on doing the same. My gray is getting there but I too have lots or yellow color left over from the old hair color that was bleached and toned. Ugh can't wait for it to be gone.

I agree with the bob. Your hair will look fabulous and you will be more comfortable with the brassy bits mostly out. So here’s a fun fact: my grandmother had super white hair and guess what she used weekly-laundry blueing! Don’t ask me what concentration...I guess that’s what they had back then!

Something like this - but maybe a little longer? You will probably have a full stubby ponytail by Christmas, but can put up the front bits right away with a big bar barrette, stretchy headband, or a mini roll or mini French braid.

You've received great advise! I like the idea of cutting out the rest of the toned bits too. Don't know if you can still tie your hair back, though? Wait and see the length you can manage.

Stacked bob sounds fun! Also, it keeps hair off your neck, which is great in the heat.

I commiserate re the toned sections. Note that the minerals in water can also have an effect! When I lived in Kingston, the mineral content in the water made my (natural grey) hair brassy! Purple toner helped there. After I moved out west, I discovered I no longer need the toner. The different minerals in the water mean I don't get a brassy build-up. So strange.

Can you tie up an angled bob? Sorry if this is a stupid question but i have never had one. Liesbeth Henna based products are never temporary even if they are marketed as such. Henna is the most long lasting dye product.

What Torontogirl and April said. I like your idea of an angled bob, shorter in the back. It means that the sides will be longer and easier to pull back.

Because I only wear something in my hair when I need to keep it out of the way I get the cut I want and deal with what's left. Hair color can be attractive and a great medium for self expression but it's very delightful to be satisfied with your natural color too.

I know the torment of brassiness and purple shampoos don't seem to do anything for me either. I don't have much in the way of suggestion but a bob as short as you can go without sacrificing the needed length in front, sounds good.

I have a short bob and a severe dislike of half updos or hair clips (look too childish on me). I keep my hair of out my face during sports activities with a cap (added bonus: sun protection) or would wear a bandana. Not sure if that would be secure enough for your water activities but just suggesting.
I do think you would look fab with a stacked bob!
Interesting about the toner. I have had red/brassy undertones in my hair for over a year, since last I died it with a temporary (but henna based) dye ... I have had it toned at the salon to remove the brassiness, lasted two weeks at most. Then a permanent color which may have lasted six weeks only... Am not planning to redye as I also want to grow out to my natural color. Currently using a purple treatment but with tiny results if any. Now you've got me thinking the color treatments only made things worse. Gotta keep thinking 'it's hair, it will grow out' but I can sure commisserate!

Many of you have followed along on my hair transformation and I have benefited from your comments and support. As I transitioned to gray hair, we used toner to keep brassiness at bay. Over time we used less and less toner. Discovery: the toned sections were the places that would turn brassy and purple hair products dimmed the discoloration, but did not erase it. Most of the toner had been applied in the back and underneath layers.
In January we decided to quit the toner. In May we cut quite a bit of length and were able to remove sections of toner. I wanted to keep as much length as possible, to be able to put my hair up in a ponytail, in anticipation of lake days. I still have some toned sections that need to grow out or be cut. The toned sections are kind of a russet color and if better blended, I would not mind it as much. However, the sections are in chunks and I can no longer stand knowing they are there. They begin at the occipital bone.

I have an appointment next week and will be keeping my hair natural in terms of color and wave/ curl. to get rid of the toned sections, I need to sacrifice some length. My stylist is going to give me a clarifying treatment to make sure we have removed as much build up and residue as possible. We will make a decision about the cut when we see how my hair looks.
For lake days of swimming and water activities, it is important to me that I am able to pull the front sections of hair up and off my face, so I will need to keep some length there. Then, what to do with the sides and back? I’m thinking perhaps an angled bob that could be worn smooth or wavy. I wonder if the back will need to be stacked, to get rid of the discoloration? I am open to other cut suggestions and welcome yours. Inspiration pictures are welcome, too.

Thank you for any ideas you care to post!
