Thanks also for the encouragement re hair as I'm definitely at the Are We There Yet stage but have miles to go. I have a lot of local cheerleaders plus the YLFers, and that sure helps offset the skeptics/"oh I could never'-ers. This rental thing can go a bit awry but it's very interesting what I pick when practicality/longevity/budget isn't a factor. CL, I broke down and started doing pushups and weights a few years ago since my upper body was so weak (I'm sooo lazy and find them soooo boring) so am going to credit them for the shoulder line. The dress is a gorgeous heavy silk; if I had Oprah money I'd sleep in it. I'm ready for the hair to be all the way done but patience patience. If I'd never started coloring I could have looked like Cruella de Ville all through my 20s+! StyleFan --  Keep us posted on your decision; it's great that you have a local option so you can touch/feel the dresses ahead of time! My big event is months away and some of their reviews mention last-minute availability issues (as in, dress was reserved but couldn't be shipped due to damage/late return) and while CS is happy to send another available one it does seem a little dicey for those big important events. I think renting may be the way to go for me.  I rarely need a dressy occasion item. And I totally agree with you on dry-cleaning smells.  I just can't stand the smell of that stuff and I avoid dry-cleaning whenever possible.  I can't imagine working with those chemicals all day, it must be very hazardous. If not you, then that YLFer looked great and I'm sure you did too!  Re RTR and cost per wear: first, they seem to eternally have a 20% off first rental or 1st month of Unlimited. So that helps. The code's on the site though I'm happy to PM anyone my referral one. They've split their services into a) short-term rentals (4 or 8 days) and b) "Unlimited," a monthly subscription where you can have up to 3 items at a time as long as you want and are paying -- though note, there doesn't seem to be access to the full RTR selection base, which I get from a biz standpoint but was a bummer as I had my eye on a few that aren't eligible/available. Some of the Unlimited items are available at ~ 50% off retail when they arrive. Good/bad: This maxi wasn't one of them. ;) Staysfit,  yes, I think RTR could work really well for your summer event/fun needs. With all your frustration finding dresses I think this service could work for you. Bonnie -- I didn't post one of the "misses" as it would need at least a PG-13 rating but it was fun to try. It does make a kind of sense, since RTR dresses are higher end than I would ever buy. I still look at it as an expensive cost per wear unless you have so many events you would wear each item multiple times. So...buy mid-range and try to wear a lot, or rent high end and try to wear a lot? I'm not a math person, so maybe the fun would trump the numbers in my case at least. That sums it up well. No, I'm definitely not at that point yet. Part of the issue is that I don't have the sort of naturally young-looking face that you all seem to have. I already seem to have more jowls and wrinkles than a lot of my peers (the chin issue doesn't show up in my photos much because I smile on purpose to get rid of it -- seriously, I look so much older when I don't smile in a photo, and it's awful). I feel like grey hair would immediately push me visually into looking like I'm 5-10 years older than I am, rather than occasionally passing for 5-10 years younger. Normally I do that with every purchase because hey, budget reality. So far with RTR it's freeing to just order something "because" but then of course for me the hard part will be giving back the ones I love. I don't think it's something you can talk yourself into...for me "maybe someday, but not now" became "let's do this." Honestly the PITA factor of dying (and highlighting 2/year to keep my hair from looking too flat) was enormous but vanity made me decide to leap. Despite trying different colorists the semi-perm color I just felt it made me look older until it faded about week 3...which is when the roots made me look washed out. Getting to month 2, when the roots grew out enough so that I didn't look balding, was the hardest part.
