You have planned very well! I did a move similar to this from the USA to Amsterdam and back again 3 years later. Would it be possible for you to take another large suitcase with you and pay the extra baggage fee? Just a thought. Good luck.

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful and helpful questions and suggestions!

I am now seriously mulling the prospect of shipping a box or two with some beloved home goods that will make our lives easier and more comfortable, and that might include some seasonal or bulky clothes. It honestly hadn't occurred to me to do this (since we're coming back to the same place, it doesn't feel quite like *moving*), so thanks so much for the idea.

I also did a dry run packing things into the big suitcase, and it easily fit everything I had listed (still on hangers!) plus some extras thrown in with quite a bit of extra room, so I can also be less spartan in the initial pack, which will be nice.

Will keep you posted! Thanks again!

Unless you plan to do some shopping, this seems pretty sparse for a year of dressing, but I think you can make it work. Are there any signature items in your closet that maybe aren’t perfectly practical but make you happy? I’d add in a few of those.

Well, if kitty is travelling in the hold, you have a bit more room. I hope she will be okay. It's definitely the hardest part. But I think there's a real attempt now to make the trips smoother for the animals (and their human friends!)

I am with those who suggest shipping a few of your things if possible. We did this. Actually, we brought quite a lot to our furnished house in Vancouver -- including a rice cooker, an Instant Pot, a really good pan, books that I needed for my work, important files, a few key photos, and our car! As per Fashintern, we also ended up making quite a few trips to Ikea, the thrift store, and the dollar store for little would make our lives more comfortable for the year.

We were able to put a lot of things into the car when we shipped that, which was a huge help. But we also sent a few items in boxes and a bag.

I'm going to side with SarahDB that unless you are intending to buy quite a bit when you are over there, your wardrobe sounds cohesive and extremely well planned, but probably not extensive enough (or interesting enough) for all your needs. If shopping for statements is on the agenda, though, this sounds like a fabulous set of essentials to build on.

I was being slightly tongue in cheek about the wellies but having said that a surprising number of people do wear them in town, they tend to wear the shorter shaft ones ,in colours to match their coat and with thick socks rolled over the top but you are right .It is a very “country “look and not at all a business or corporate look if you are working .I think even Audrey would struggle to make a wellie look business appropriate !They can However be very appropriate for our climate if you are on a day out and it’s wet but other waterproof footwear is available if wellies are not your thing. If you do fancy the wellie look ,Joules is a retailer that offers a wide selection of fun wellies.

My dear notsaf, there is no need to get away with anything! We moved into a furnished house in France too. It was SOOO worth it having more than what we needed, and our treasures, with us.

As for pets, last time I looked, the UK puts pets into quarantine if they enter the UK. Is your doggie going into quarantine?

As for plane travel - you need to use a VERY good, organized, professional and reputable service to fly your pet abroad. They will give you detailed instructions on what to do. Pets cannot be drugged on long flights for many reasons. They go into the pressurized livestock section of the aircraft which is comfortable. They will be nervous, but okay. I needed the sedative - not them!

Our two Yorkshire terriers - Jasmine & Rosie - passed through the UK when we flew to the US from France. The UK is VERY dog-friendly and they were great to them

Wow! What an adventure! I can't wait to follow along with you. You are wise to be thinking ahead and packing so carefully.

Maybe it's just that I am not a wardrobe minimalist, but I will be the spanner and say that your list of items seems uncomfortably spare to me. For example, the well-known minimalist wardrobe challenge project 3/33 involves 33 clothing items worn for 3 months -- you have not much more than that for 11 months, to cover all activities and weather conditions!

I would spend some time breaking down how your list shakes out into sub-capsules for different activities and weather conditions, and making sure you have enough outfits that you like for each. For example, you note that you try to avoid head-to-toe black. But you have quite a few navy bottoms, black tops, and dark toppers. So are you ok with head-to-toe dark, and are you happy mixing black and navy in an outfit? If not, it looks like you will be leaning very heavily on those white tops -- and of course white tends to need laundering more often. What are the laundry facilities available to you? What will you wear when you go out at night? What will you wear in Portugal? Presumably your sundress and those slide sandals. But what else? Will jeans and a short-sleeve tee be cool enough? It doesn't look like you have a warm-weather topper, unless one of your blazers works with the sundress.

Anyway, those are not meant to be questions for you to answer on-thread but just some examples of the types of things and situations I would try to puzzle through. Good luck!

If you ship, here's a mistake I made that you can learn from: I focused on prices and reviews, didn't really think about time. It took a couple MONTHS for the pallet we shipped to arrive. I couldn't complain, because they hadn't made any promises. You can do better.

Gretchen: thank you so much! Most of the tees category will be useful as work tops for me (under a blazer with dark wash jeans — my work wear is so much less formal than yours!) but you’re right that ideally I’d like a least one other top that can be worn under the navy blazer. I had one in mind, but Angie observed the other day that it’s too small, so I’m having second thoughts! Importing goods later on is a bit of a headache as there’s paperwork to be filled out, but this is something to consider…

Angie: That’s a VERY good question. The answer is mostly that I think I can get away with *not* shipping, since we’re renting a furnished flat, but as Gretchen suggested above, it might be worth thinking about... Agreed: I’m more worried about the health and happiness of my pet than anything else! She’s pretty brave, and does well travelling with us in the car, but this will a whole other ballgame. Any advice you have for making it pleasant for them would be most welcome!

Torontogirl: thank you — and have a wonderful trip yourself!

Joy: thanks, and good question! The pumps are waterproof (Aquatalia) but otherwise this set isn’t particularly, but I think the ankle boots will hold up well in a shower. Have considered packing an old pair of Aquatalia black suede riding boots, but frankly it’s getting to be time replace them. On my list of things to look for this winter!

Cardiffgirl: I’m positive AH wore wellies! Do you find wellies useful in the city in fall/winter? (I think of them for walks in the meadow.) See above re: boots.

Suz (and hi Max!): I had no idea I was in such good company: solidarity! The UK doesn’t allow animals to enter in the cabin, so she has to fly in the cargo hold. Virgin Atlantic have been very helpful and she’ll have the compartment to herself, but understandably we’re nervous wrecks. Good luck on the next leg of your move!

Xtabay: Thanks so much for the kind words!

Fashintern: Yes, it’s a furnished flat, so much less to worry about, but that's a great reminder to bring a few personal things, including photos. I'll put our French press on the list! (And of course, we’re bringing some favorite cat toys.) Kitty is coming cargo on our flight with Virgin. I love travelling with the Lo and Sons bag and prefer the smaller size under the seat; plus it will be very useful for subsequent trips. (I could also carry a bigger carry-on roller, but think the smaller one will be more useful for shorter trips during the year.)

Rachylou: They’ve stopped requiring a quarantine, fortunately! And I have a separate packing list for electronics, which are pretty minimal (laptop, iPad, phone, chargers). They’ll travel under-seat in the carry-on tote.

NICELY PLANNED. How exciting and exhilarating! I'm impressed :)

Sooooo I have a question before I delve into the details: Why can't you send stuff over to London before you get there so that you don't need to fit it all into a duffle bag and carry-on? That way you can have more of what you want and need with you for the year.

We moved from South Africa to France and did just that. We sent stuff over beforehand, and it was a very good decision. Then when we moved from France to the US, we had movers move stuff from South Africa AND France. It was hectic, but very organized.

We have also moved with dogs across continents several times, so feel free to ask about that! THAT was the most stressful part for us :(

Wow, you have really done a lot of work - impressive! I second FashIntern’s comment about adding a few homey items to help you feel settled.

Do you have enough work tops? The # of tops seems low compared to the bottoms. Or maybe you’re planning to augment that later?

One other idea from a friend who had a similar extended stay. Consider packing a box or 2 of seasonal items and have a friend or family member ship them when appropriate. You might target 2 boxes (one for early a winter, and one for early spring) that have 4-5 clothing items and a couple home items (Christmas decorations?) You could ship the boxes back at the end of your trip along with your UK souvenirs.

And... I’m back already because that is a tight plan! My only thought is, what about your electronics? When I used to travel for work, it became all about managing the weight of my electronic gear(!)

This is great. Now you have time to sweat the “small” stuff, which is never as small as you expect (at least for me it isn’t).

For accessories, think through complete outfits, maybe by going through your shoes—what are all the ways you like to wear the first, including belt, jewelry, hosiery, etc. With the second pair? The third?... I find this results in a bigger list than i expect, usually.

I take it you’ll be staying in a fully furnished place? So did we, at first, but we still enjoyed bringing a favorite coffee mug, throw blanket, etc. These items will probably pop up at you while you are packing for storage, but it’s still worth paying a little extra attention to daily rituals. Also, are there framed photos or (small!) holiday decorations that would be meaningful? Those things, plus a quick run to Ikea for an area rug and a couple similar things, really made the temp places feel like home.

Are you taking kitty yourself or using something like Air Animal Pet Movers?

Enjoy your adventure! It will be over before you know it—we are both astounded that we’ve been here for a year.

ETA That’s a classy tote, but you know your under-the-seat item can be much larger.

It sounds like you're meeting your packing and wardrobe challenges with style and great planning! You were smart to come to YLF for ideas. I learned here to pack shoes first, then plan outfits around them. That has definitely worked out well for me. Have a great time on your travels!

Wow. This is IMPRESSIVE. Good for you.

I am in the midst of my own packing/ moving upheaval now. And this is the second time in two years. The first time, I didn't have to pack our entire home because we were renting it out furnished, so I just had to cull things and put away valuables and decide what to bring. But I did fly cross-country with my cat and bags holding all the clothes I could bring, so it was similar to your journey in that way.

If your cat is going with you in cabin, will you be allowed that extra personal item? My cat counted as my personal item so I had him and the carry on -- had to put everything I needed in that somehow.

It looks like I didn't post about this at all but I do have a photo of puss. :)

For this move -- it's packing up a house we've lived in for more than a decade and putting stuff into storage. We still don't know where we will land more permanently but know we will be on the west coast for at least another year. I empathize with the work ahead of you -- it's great you're organized with your wardrobe and know what you are bringing. And how exciting to spend a year in the UK!

PS - Max did well in the carrier and adjusted quite quickly to his new home.

TLDR: I’m moving, and thinking a lot about what’s going into my suitcases!

I popped up on the forum actively this summer (after lurking for a while!) largely because I wanted to connect with this group of smart and stylish women as I plan for THE BIG MOVE, something I know many of you have gone through, from Angie on down.

My big move is actually TWO MOVES in one: FIRST, we’re giving up our apartment (where we’ve been for two years) at the end of August and moving to a temporary place (*huge* thanks to my brother and sister in law who have an Airbnb in town). THEN, a month later, we’re flying to the UK with our cat for an 11-month work gig. We’ll be coming back stateside at the end of summer next year.

This means that I have to pack everything I own into storage at the same time that I’m packing a four-season wardrobe (and toiletries/beauty) capsule.

The good news is that we’re going to London (yey!), so I know I will be able to get anything I could possibly need/want there and more. But since the trip is for work, I’ll have to hit the ground running, so I’ve been carefully curating my fall picks in anticipation of the first few weeks/months abroad.

(Also good news that I’ve spent a good amount of time in the UK recently, so I’m familiar with – and fond of! – the weather/style in most seasons. Though let’s talk again at the end of January... And I’ve lived and worked abroad before, so am familiar with some of the mechanics of long-term capsules and visa applications etc., which makes things a lot easier. However, I have never before travelled with a pet, and as some of you will know, that’s adding lots of moving parts to the to-do list...)

Inspired by Jenn’s recent post and Angie’s packing advice (links below), I decided to inventory my wardrobe while doing a last cull before the move. It’s been a great activity to burn up some anxious energy over the last few days, and I feel like I now have a very good grasp on what I have. WOW!

https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....g-so-geeky

https://youlookfab.com/2019/06.....-new-home/

The last step is to make a packing list of what’s coming with me.

Notes: Everything I’m bringing must fit into one large 26” Briggs and Riley duffle roller suitcase + one small carry-on roller + one carry-on tote (exact items in finds). Ideally, I’d be able to limit the wardrobe to the checked bag to leave space for other things.

Some of what I’m bringing anticipates trips for work and pleasure (hi, Wales and Portugal!) that I know I will be making to warmer and colder climates over the next months, but I’m trying to keep things as simple as possible.

Shoes are apparently my biggest vice: true in my wardrobe inventory as well, I discovered. (Like Angie, I have fussy feet, but for me, that means having access to a good variety day-to-day, even while travelling.)

You’ll also see I rely a lot on black with a supporting cast of other neutrals (camel, white and ivory, some dark blue, occasionally army green). That is what it is. I always feel put together in black, though do try avoid all black looks.

As for dresses, I’m surprised I’m not more interested in bringing them with me, but I do anticipate being able to shop for frocks for the season there (hi, Whistles!). I would very much like to have one good *every occasion dress* — which for me means something with a little personality that could easily go a dinner or to brunch — but it’s unlikely I’ll find that unicorn before I leave.

Outwear and cold-weather accessories 4 (not counting very small pieces)

Camel coat
Trench coat (wear on plane)
Oversized scarves (x 2: one olive green, one camel)
Black mid-weight scarf (in carry-on tote)
Patterned silk square scarf
Black wool beanie hat (in carry-on tote)
Black wool beret
Black cashmere gloves

Toppers 6

Black blazers (x 2: one wool, one linen)
Navy blazers (x 2: one wool, one ponte and belonging to a
suit)
Oversized cardigans (x 2: one camel, one black; wear one on

Tops 7+

Dress 1

Shoes 8

Snake print slide sandals
Camel ballet flats
White sneakers (wear on plane)
Silver brogues
Black pointed-toe ballet flats
Black suede pumps
Black high-shaft booties
Workout sneakers

Gear 6 (not counting small pieces)

Rain parka
Workout leggings (x 2)
Workout tanks (x 3)
Sports bras (x 2)
Grippy socks (1); No show socks (4)

Loungewear/PJs 7

Black loungewear leggings (wear on plane)
Black cami set with shorts and long pants
Navy and white striped short-sleeved + shorts set
Black floral kimono robe

That’s all of it! If you’ve gotten here: cheers, and thank you for reading. As always, comments, suggestions, and pearls of wisdom are very welcome!
