This was a style that I coveted some years ago. In fact I am still holding on to my tweed vest although I haven't dress it in years. You made me think about it again so maybe I will give it a try :)
I think that this concept makes perfect sense for you. Let us know what you find.

I love your description of your style. I worked at a school last semester for my education major, and I loved compiling elegant and scholarly outfits. My inspiration was something like Mary Poppins meets Annie Hall.

I definitely stood out from the staff at the school in the formality of my attire. I got a few omments along the lines of, "You don't have to dress so formally...", but I felt like it was part of my developing teacher-philosophy to dress with care and a high degree of professionalism. Plus I grew up in Europe and I have a different approach to dressing.

To make this long story short, I am totally rooting for your style. I have found some killer pieces on my thrifting adventures. The jewel in my crown is this beautiful Evan-Picone jacket that I bought at a garage sale. I had it tailored. I recommend tailoring stuff if you have vintage items that work into your concept.

Thanks for sharing!

It was a knitting pattern that turned me on to WH13, hehe. And whee for binge watching! Since we're talking about Edwardians and opulence, you have read The Children's Book right? It starts in the late Victorian period and ends w the end of WWI, so it's centered around Edwardians and Byatt's prose is at its most baroque self. It's delicious!

I love what RachyLou said too. I've never thought about wardrobe opulence, but now I see I'm definitely in that camp. Much nicer than having to regularly say I'm in the not-minimalist camp. Hehe

WordLily, I have actually stocked up on kimono type toppers this summer! I love their boho/Edwardian vibe!

Joy, you know, I've actually thought about going to a mens' department and being fitted for a 3 piece suit ...

Alasse, of course I was hoping you'd comment! OMG, that sterling heather jacquard boot skirt from LE is just going to have to be mine.

Elly, isn't HG the greatest?

You know Astrid, I think you already have a sort of (girly) gentleman vibe in your outfits.

Ooooh, Jenn, I love outdoorsy bookworm as a descriptor. And you know, I do have a pair of Born boots that are a lace up style brogue. They are comfortable but not truly tramp around comfy, you know? I want a pair of tromp through the woods comfy.

E, thank you for mentioning WH13 to me earlier - I'malso on Season 4, have been binge watching for a week or so. I knew you'd totally grok this concept.

Suz, you know I do finally feel like I can start dressing for me - it's liberating!

unfrumped, the Anthro pants are great. Unfortunately, I'm sized out of many of them (and most mass produced clothing) so it's a little harder for me to find that sort of thing retail. Good inspiration though!

Cerinda - you know, I never felt more sartorially constrained than my 8 years in an Anthro program! I started out wearing dresses and boots and blazers and people acted like I was wearing a ballgown and tiara. I think they expected me to be in a pith helmet every day ...

Diana, your knitwear has actually inspired me to take up knitting, although I don't know if I'll ever reach your level of amazingness ...

Angie, I do hope the Edwardian Dandy look trickles into the plus size market! But you know, I don't see it as a switch from my boho at all - I see it as a continuation - I think boho is just the modern expression of Edwardian, in a weird way ...

Rachylou, I love that you too want opulence ... enough of this minimalist rigidity and discipline!

Oh yes!
I do not have the exact same style goals, but I share your love of great fabrics, wools and blends, with texture and mini-patterns.
That probably is driving my interest in the Anthro pants more than trendy cropped length issues.

Anthro to me is a tantalizing retailer due to interesting and varied makers, with lot of color, natural fabrics, interesting designs but skew casual or "just plain weird" and the quality varies a lot due to many different sources.
So you may do better with the more dependable brands, even Talbots (Talbots does tweeds and plaids that sometimes are very useful), Pendleton for their woolens , and AT for some, EF for some fabrics, hunting down the best colors and fits there and augmenting with more exotic accessories.

Oh fun!!! I just recently finished watched Warehouse 13 (thru S4, since the final one isn't available yet) and loved HG's outfits. Also love all of the characters' costumes in Miss Fisher's etc, including Mac! So I definitely approve of your plans for the season and wish you luck in finding the right pieces. I finally found a vest/waistcoat that I feel good in during a thrifting trip in May and I've already worn it a couple times, on the cooler summer days. I think I'm going to knit one too...

Anyway, I hope you continue to share inspiration and outfit posts w us! I read this before getting dressed for the day (I tend to read the forum in odd moments when I can't reply, then reply later when I have more free time) and felt inspired to pull out a paisley scarf and design an outfit around it, in a nod to Edwardian orientalist proclivities.

I have been picturing my aspirational style as a sort of wild west meets professor (I've been calling it "outdoorsy bookworm), so I can definitely relate. My choices skew a little more modern than yours, but I think the trick is still to grab those elements that "make" the style without having it look costume. Eva does a really good job at that, and so does Alassë.

I've been stalking Boden as they roll out their fall line. They almost always have some great tweed options. L.L. Bean has some pieces with that Edwardian equestrian vibe.

I have a wonderful pair of lace-up boots from Born (see find), but they're probably 6 or 7 years old at this point. Worth checking their line, though, as they often have similar pairs.

Well, I can certainly relate to you on the "dirty/cold/human remains" level and that when you have the opportunity it makes you want to dress much smarter, even if you could get away with dressing down.

I love your style ideas. Try thrift shops for the skirt and check the men's for possible vest or suit. I have found lovely long black skirts, which could be easily shortened to a midi. Look at the men's shirts for something collarless ( looking oriental?) or with an oversized collar for more Edwardian.
Antique malls may have those lace collars that women once wore and are easy to add on a crew neck pullover. Hats and bags too.
If there is a shop that benefits palliative care or hospice, be sure to look regularly, remembering that things might be able to be tailored to fit. They are a good source of vintage and clothing in nice fabrics that was kept for "good".

I can definitely relate! The tweed, vests, the pinstripes, those fantasy boots? Yum. I love all the menswear aspects of what you're talking about.

[HG has such great outfits on Warehouse 13!]

I don't hear many specifics of the Eastern/Oriental vibe you're wanting to bring in; maybe a kimono-style topper?

This is the first fall in nearly a decade that I have not been a graduate student working with human remains in an extremely cold museum. My previous attempts to plan my fall wardrobe were grounded by concerns like "clothing must be sturdy, wash and wear, comfortable, and able to withstand climbing ladders and crawling under tables." Also, most of the time I had a lab coat on, both for warmth and protection from dirt, etc. I did accessorize with jewelry and scarves, but that was limited by practicality (and budget).

Now I work full time in at a university in a professional (not academic) capacity. Although my office is quite casual, and really, even my grad school togs look better than what some of my colleagues wear, I'm finding that I hold myself to a higher (or at least different) standard. This fall, I want my clothes to look: simple but beautiful, well fitting, with an a turn of the century flair. And of course I want to showcase my scarves and jewelry. The Edwardian era, or Belle Epoque, from where I draw much inspiration/influence was all about beautiful textiles, a feeling of opulence, and an "oriental" influence and, frankly, so am I.

Here's what I'm looking for specifically:

A couple of midi skirts in plain but rich fabric

One or two pair of trousers in a sombre but rich plaid, tweed, or herringbone, and in my fantasy world, they would come with a matching vest

One or two chunky but elegant knit wraps/ruanas/capes

A navy vest, a pinstripe or herringbone vest

High quality, walkable leather boots that either lace or button up or have other Victorian details (my fantasy boots are knee high lace ups with brogue detailing, but I'm only expecting to find ankle versions)

"East meets wild wild west" and "Edwardian gentleman naturalist" are still good descriptors of what I'm after, but I already have plenty of wild wild west and naturalist stuff, so I'm looking to beef up my eastern/oriental, Edwardian, and gentlemanly aspects.

Can anyone other than E(va) and Alasse relate to any of this?
