It really does force me to think outside the conventional box in these situations! That isn't necessarily bad, but it can limit my options.

Those are nice too - and tall boots make everything look better - I agree. Sorry about the dressy shoes conundrum

I liked both of these on Simons website -- thinking of cozy, autumn-y looks that could work with tall boots and read relaxed luxe (ish) for a possibly outdoor fall wedding (and beyond) These might still be a bit aspirational though. I don't think either one has pockets...:-)

Oh, Wow, Lisa, that is great-- and i love the teal. And the price. The taunt for me is that something like this seems to need a dressier shoe, and dressy shoes and I just don't seem to be on speaking terms. Maybe a reasonably refined knee high boot, if such a thing is to be found?

Thanks so much, Angie! It might be more of a pseudo suit than a real suit at this point, but I think this is a very practical direction for me to explore -- especially if all or some of the celebration takes place outside -- which was something the couple was exploring.

CarolS, it's lovely to see you back on the forum! A big congrats on reaching your weight loss goals, and best wishes for the ongoing journey. I remember your WIWs, and especially love your thick and luscious salt and pepper hair and fab specs!

Big Emma Thompson fan, and GO FOR IT!! Get a fab suit and wear polished sneakers with it. Suits are very versatile - that's why I just bought another! A pants suit will stand you good stead now and in retirement. You can pull it out for all sorts of settings by dressing it up or down.

Fashintern -- I might have some things. The silk EF pants MIGHT fit. There's another slightly heavier crepe pant that almost fits. I have various black tanks, although I'd like to find a simple, dressy cream if I could. I used to have a black velvet blazer, but it might have been so many sizes ago that I donated it. Haven't gone to check yet. I did a middle aged reality check purge a few years ago!

Not sure I would dare, but part of me wants to be the auntie who shows up in sneakers -- like Emma Thompson here.

LisaP, your question about Eileen Fisher got me thinking. In the very back of my closet I found a black silk EF set - pants and a tank - that my SIL sent my way when it no longer fit her. The pants are too long and both pieces are still a bit snug, but maybe in eight weeks it becomes an option... Go figure.

I'm actually starting to think about putting together something tuxedo-esque that would let me wear an evening type pant with dressy oxfords rather than trying to find ladylike shoes that will get limited wear. This might be a very practical approach if some or all of the wedding ends up being outdoors...

Thanks, Bijou - those shoes are adorable! I wish ballet flats would work for me. I don't know if there's a rental place I could consider, but that's certainly another option to explore!

Carol, congratulations on losing the weight. In relation to the dress for the wedding is there a local rental service that you can get a fabulous outfit without the pressure of needing find something that will continue to fit once you get to your target weight?

In relation to shoes, you will want to make sure that they are comfortable and a bit worn in before the event. I would buy something simple but a bit dressy - such as a metallic shoe with a low heel - as that won't restrict your dress or outfit choices. I have these silver glitter flats and find them useful for events like this - at least shoes will not be impacted by your weight loss.

First of all congratulations on meeting your goals, esp. in these Covid Times. Quite an accomplishment, and bodes well for continuing success! If you have not seen them, you may want to take a look at Toban's postings from a few years ago on managing a wardrobe during weight loss. She has some particularly good advice on how to repeatedly assess needs for the next month or two, and shop carefully etc. Sounds like your shopping can include your closet, which is great! I found them invaluable when I lost some weight last year and refer to them often.

Congrats on the weight loss! Sooo much easier to have good habits when you can wfh- in my experience!
Sounds like a good plan- but if you feel like your current size is transitional, just buying the basics is a good idea.

How fun to be reaching into the back of your closet! I just love seeing “old friends” again that way.

On buying the pants a little snug so they fit in the spring: that’s a strategy that sometimes worked for me with my weight loss. I was glad to get into some of those goal pieces. But there were others I thought were more whimsical when I bought them that turned out to be cheaply made or a little too “out there” for me. So don’t be like me; if you buy some slightly small things to encourage the weight loss, make sure they are all the quality and styles you truly enjoy. What seems like a fun one-off now might feel different when you can finally put it on. But again, I don’t mean to dissuade you from this entirely. There are some very successful pieces I bought too small for me, including the bottoms here and my black & white joggers (that I took the elastic out of).

Now I’m going to read what others have said before mentioning my idea for the wedding.

Ok, I’m back. My idea for the wedding isn’t revolutionary. It is simply to get separates. That way you can have a better fit on the day, no matter which parts of you are growing or shrinking. If you want a dress look, go for a 2-piece dress. Later, you can dress either one piece of your outfit down by wearing it with more casual pieces, maybe even to the office.

Earlier I said to get good stuff to shrink into. When I gained, I eventually hit a point where I literally had nothing to wear but knit skirts that strained to reach around me. I hit the clearance rack at Nordy’s and picked up a few items that I wore heavily for many months. I liked them and was sad to see 2 shorts and 1 top in particular have to go because they were just too big (if I’d known my current tailor, I would’ve had the shorts adjusted). They were decent quality, but not expensive. I hope you find similar on your Winners shopping trip.

Irina -- I will make note to look at Aritizia's accessories. Especially if I end up finding my winter coat there - might be a good shot for a coordinating combo.

Carla - good point about white jeans possibly being on an end of season sale. I often forget about Mark's but I will take a look. I really do want something classic like Levi's.

Now is probably a good time to look at white jeans, ‘cause they are likely to be included in end of summer sales. I’m a fan of Marks Work Warehouse for classic Levi’s denim.

Winners/TJMax might be just the place for the wedding guest dress. They often have Ralph Lauren dresses at great prices. RL does a lot of tailored or ruched sheath styles that skim the body without being too body con. Maybe you will find something that works for the October wedding, but also for holiday (Christmas) celebrating?

Thank you, Lisa! I tried them on at Shelmerdine's a couple of weekends ago. They only had full sizes, though, and I felt I needed something in between. I ordered the half size direct from Olukai. It was tempting to order them in white at the same time to save on the shipping, but that seemed like rather foolish economy if they turned out to not fit!

And hey, working at Reh-Fit might be just the inspiration I need to keep this weight off!

Well , I’ve seen you often lately and think you are looking great ! With your salt/ peppery hair , a cream capsule will be gorgeous . We can build our fictional collections together . I just received a great pair of straight leg cream jeans from Simon’s ( yes I buy everything from them now - lol) . $79 or $99 I think , and free shipping and returns . True to size . I have terrible luck with jeans though - can never get a good fit - so take that with a grain of salt . No suggestions for a dress from me - I fear the day when I need a dressy dress for anything . How about an Eileen Fisher tho? Oh , and , when you retire would you consider coming to work with me ? We need people . Normal people too. Like now . Lastly - yay for Olukai sneakers ! Where did you get them ?

Thanks for the tip, Chewyspaghetti -- I admire how to get the best of ON! I hope I can do as well.

Donna F, so far I am losing all over, but noticing it most in the bust and waist. The midsection is where I tend to carry weight. Because I have a chest to contend with, sometimes a dolman sleeve can feel like it draws a lot of attention where I don't want it, but the fact is I really have to stay open and try things on -- it's a matter of finding the garment that has the right combination of factors to work for my shape! (Dropped shoulder is also a good option for me sometimes.) Bummer to find your expensive sports bras aren't fitting anymore, but wow -- to be back at Junior High weight is pretty cool. I'm prepared to limp along and make do in a few areas to see where I finally stabilize.

Check Aritzia for hats. I got a nice, cashmere beanie in off white there They are reasonably priced for cashmere.
Love your sweater, one of my favorite colors this season!

FYI- Old Navy's vary wildly from store to store. One of my local stores carries athletic wear, skinny jeans and tees/sweats. Another one carries blouses and dresses along with basics. I find that they only carry a few jean styles in store, so I usually have to order online to try them on. Good news is that youcan return in store for most items.

Congratulations on your weight loss! In addition to raglan sleeves consider dolman sleeves. Also, since you hope to lose more weight, consider where you tend to lose inches. All over? Or mostly waist or stomach? I’ve heard that women tend to lose from the top down and gain from the bottom up. . . .

This year due to stepped up exercise I have lost some weight. Maybe eight or ten pounds depending on what you consider the starting point, so not a great deal but I now weigh what I did in junior high so I’m not confident that this current weight will last. But what I discovered to my shock is that the shoulders on some shirts/blouses are now to big as are the cups in my newi$h $port$ bra$; the regular bras are fine thank goodness. So my advice is to avoid the roomy and get stuff that barely fits. Generally the advice on white jeans is to go up a size for greater opacity especially at the pockets, so not sure what to tell you there, except consider alterations down the road.

Love the thought and the detail that's gone into this Carol and congrats on the weight loss, that's amazing progress!

Also trying to shed some lockdown pounds but hoping the majority of clothing will just have a more relaxed fit by the end Had a mini spree when I realised almost all of my summer tops were at least two years old and were looking a little tired, and I didn't seem to have a single pair of trousers that fitted that weren't navy or very dark indigo denim.

I can totally relate to a swing away from office wear to work from home too - not sure when we're going back, and when we do it looks like it will only be for one day a week, so trying to get my head around how much work wear actually makes sense. Buying for real life vs. imaginary life is hard enough at the best of times without having to guess what real life will actually be for the next few months - you're definitely not alone!

Needs: On the lookout for a pair of sneakers very like the ones you've posted
Do not buy: Navy trousers!
