Wow some of this discussion is quite high level! I have no idea what performativity even is ( and nor does my I-phone which could not predict that word). As it is Sunday night and I'm relaxing on my phone before bed, before another big week, I will not Google it. I guess I'm very comfortable in the *appearance* of my femininity and always have been, but what hasn't been comfortable is relating to powerful men throughout my career and sometimes feeling "other" than them when I have as much right to be listened to as they do. And it has caused me issues in the past. Getting older has definitely helped.

fashiontern -- You're so right about how the juxtaposition of masculine/feminine can end up emphasizing a woman's femininity or a man's masculinity rather than obscuring it. I'm going to come back later and write a longer post about performativity/performance; don't have the time right now.

Interesting idea. Have you written more about your own experiments with performativity?
I often think menswear emphasizes feminine body shape. Think of wearing men's jeans (that "boyfriend" jeans are modeled after). The way they're cut means that curves that might not even show up in women's styles totally bust through and are emphasized. A man and a woman doing the same dance moves works that way too.

DonnaF, the only age that skirt would be inappropriate for would be very young teen. And maybe not even then. You're going to rock it; I hope it fits perfectly!

I look forward to reading the posts. I think this is fascinating and would definitely participate, but it is in the 80's here and I don't think my Summer wardrobe is gender-neutral. I agree that Fall/Winter is a much easier Season for this type of challenge.

And Donna -- I love that skirt. I sincerely hope it fits and is long enough. It is NOT age, it is ATTITUDE. You would rock that skirt out of the park.

Is approprio around lately? We've talked a few times about the rich and varied appeal of gender-neutral clothing, and the layers of choices involved.

This month isn't good timing for challenge participation for me, but I'll try to follow along and do a bit of sorting. Late November through December will be ideal, and that would work splendidly with the events I'll be dressing for then.

Thank you for remembering this, and for setting up a structure. I'm going to enjoy making my own lists and following early participation rounds.

Oh, I give myself so much leeway with a 10x10, or any of those # challenges. What I really do is pick the number of items and spend an afternoon making outfits and photographing. Then I keep the items pulled aside in my wardrobe and wear off them for a while, pulling inspiration from the photos I took, until I get tired of them.

I get too emotional if I don't feel good in my clothes for the day. I can't force myself to wear something that doesn't work, in the name of challenging myself.

DonnaF that moto skirt is awesome! I wish I still had a kilt -- if I did, I would totally include it in a menswear/androgyny challenge. Global androgyny -- that could be really interesting.

Traci, I thought about doing a 10x10 but that's something I still can't wrap my mind around. I think the laundering would become too stressful with such a small number. I could probably pick ten items and wear one each day, but that stops feeling like any kind of challenge.

Hope all is well, Suz; sounds like you have lots on your plate. I miss your voice and your presence.

I will seriously consider this if it gets a little cooler where I live. These combat boots were delivered today, and they look like a *go*. But I also re-ordered this skirt in a larger size. If it fits AND is long enough I want to wear it unless I decide it is wildly inappropriate which I'm pretty sure it is, at least for someone my age. But the leather was so-o-o soft in the ones I returned. . .

This is an interesting challenge. At first blush I'd say I've been dressing this way all the time recently - focus on practicality, very little jewelry, and most clothing pieces have been gender neutral. The other day I wore a skirt and it felt totally odd. Then again, my hair is long, I'm still wearing makeup on occasion, and my body is obviously female, so it doesn't read butch to most people, I don't think.

Probably my biggest stumbling block would be shoes, unless I just wore sneakers all the time. I have a couple pairs of oxfords but my main non-sneaker flats are ballet flats.

I'm thinking on this one.

I've been considering doing a Fall 10x10, maybe I'll combine the two. I don't think I'd want to do a whole month of gender neutral outfits, and I'm late joining anyway.

As I think through it, my style has moved more gender neutral in the last couple of years, but nothing I own, other than graphic t-shirts, are actually gender neutral pieces. I also notice that on my pieces that are more gender neutral, I tend to balance that with color, rolling or gathering, and accessories. I'll think on tamping those things down.

Nice idea.

Oh, also: I'm Canadian by marriage only. I grew up in Vermont. DH is from New Brunswick. I lived there with him for a bit, but right now we're in New Hampshire. We do travel to Canada pretty frequently, and my computer was purchased there. I never changed the language settings, so its spellcheck has trained me to write things (colour, favourite) in Canadian English.

Oh, thanks Greyscale! I tried to find the thread where we mentioned it, and came up empty-handed.

Angie -- Chukka boots, AKA "desert boots" are low, lace-up ankle boots: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chukka_boot

As to my motivation -- I find gender presentation endlessly fascinating. I also need some motivation to break out of my "running tights and hoodies" rut and would like to play with my blazers. As I mentioned, I'm not going to limit myself in terms of accessories, so I can add scarves, jewelry, etc when/if I feel so inclined.

I'm already planning to follow this up with a dress-and-skirt challenge in November, but I think I only have enough to do maybe a week to ten days, give or take.

The discussion was buried in the comment thread on some other post and I can't for the life of me remember what it was about. I'll keep searching!

Edit: found it! We didn't say much.

https://youlookfab.com/welookf.....st-1818330

At the time my definition was "I would interpret the challenge (for myself) as primarily women's clothing chosen to look androgynous. I've realized that most actual men's clothing is just too big on me, which is too bad, because sometimes it's the best way to get that awesome Marlene Dietrich look."

I'm going to post more about my motivations too.

I also missed this discussion. I'm thinking about it, and now I don't know that I know what it means. I mean, I grew up very preppy, which is darn gender neutral. Everybody in the same squarish silhouette comprised of khakis and crew neck jumpers. Does it mean the clothing hides your gender? I'm trying to think if I could even achieve one outfit these days with what I have...

Oooh yes!!!! I remember we talked about this. It's warm in SF right now so I might wait a week to start. I was originally thinking it would be one of my shopping focuses for the fall but not so much. I feel like I have some wardrobe gaps if I want to really do this. I used to have a pair of very masculine wool trousers for instance but I stupidly sold them.

I can't decide how thoroughly I want to do this: men's outfits for a whole week, post just a few here and there, real capsule, etc. Will report back.

(I thought you were in Canada?)

What is appealing about a gender-neutral capsule, La Ped? I'm curious. Your items here do sound 100% Tomboy. And what's a chukka?

What a fun challenge. I tend to dress fairly gender-neutral also. Hope to see some of the results.

Over the summer, a few forum members discussed the possibility of a gender-neutral (GN) challenge, and decided it would be easier to do with fall wardrobes than summer ones. Now that the weather is finally starting to feel a little like fall (still no frost in sight -- which is crazy for mid-October in New England), I've pulled together a capsule and plan to start this challenge tomorrow, October 10th. I'll probably stick with my capsule through the end of the month.

Gender-neutral dressing is actually not terribly difficult for me. Apart from dresses and skirts, and I guess gear leggings, I don't have a lot of emphatically femme clothing. The most challenging element of the capsule will be encouraging myself to wear my two blazers, which don't see as much sunlight as they should, thanks to my extremely casual lifestyle.

My break-down is 5 pants, 4 "toppers", 4 knit tops, 4 shirts, and 4 footwear. I may cheat in a couple more feminine pairs of pants if I end up with a laundry bottleneck -- 5 pairs probably won't be enough. I'm not including baselayers or accessories here, just core wardrobe. Hard to know what the temps will be over the next few weeks; the weather has been so unpredictable. It's not a numbers challenge anyway, just a style challenge.

Levi's 501's (3 pairs -- black, dark blue, light blue)

Green chinos

Mountain Khakis

Blazers (2 -- one grey herringbone, one black with piping)

Green field jacket

Wool plaid shirt-jac

Cotton henleys (one black, one sage green)

Merino turtleneck sweater (charcoal)

Merino v-neck sweater (burgundy)

Oxford shirts (2 -- blue striped and tan striped)

Flannel shirt (black stewart plaid)

Chambray shirt

Blundstone chelsea boots (black)

Oxfords (black)

Sneakers (navy)

Chukkas (burgundy)

I'll try to post some WIWs over the next few weeks, but life is pretty busy right now.
