June tends to not be very warm yet... so I'm not even sure you'll need shorts. check the weather before you start packing. And Mary is right about SF..... it is quite cool and overcast there much of the time.

Big fun! Remember, San Francisco can be QUITE cool at night, even in the summer. (Mark Twain is said to have remarked, "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco!") And San Francisco is the dressiest city in California so you can definitely dress up as much as you like for your dinner in the city!

Oh, and I don't know when you are coming, but out here August and September are the hottest months, June is likely to be cool, and July is anybody's guess. So watch the weather reports carefully in the days before you travel!

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'm coming from the Chicago area - and right now it feels like it will still be winter in June! So, it will likely be hotter than here anyway. I may have to go look for a nice hat - that could be fun. And I think I will pack my white jeans since they can be dressed up or down. At least that is something I won't have to buy.

Oh I used to live in Sonoma County! It's really beautiful and you will have a great time!
The only thing that I can add is that it doesn't get super hot (of course- that depends on your definition of hot). I'm in the desert now, and there's no comparison!

Oh, lucky you -- a great area (and city) to explore!

In addition to your choices, I'd put in a pair of pants (possibly jeans/white jeans) and even consider a lightweight coat if you are the type to run cold. Depending on what's going on with the weather, there can be chilly morning fog even in the winter -- but you will likely have gorgeous sun for most of your trip!

[Oh -- lots of nice hats on the women around there, so if you're like me you won't feel out of place using one for sun protection.]

What a fun trip. My husband and I spent a weekend in Healdsburg a few years ago at the Haydon Street Inn... the breakfasts were absolutely divine, and it was a really quiet and relaxing place to stay. The owner was formerly the executive chef for Churchill Downs in Kentucky. It really was yummy!

We're headed to Northern Sonoma County. I can't wait - this will be our first "just the two of us" vacation since we had our daughter (and she's almost 12!). We do plan some dinners out to nice restaurants. We're also planning to spend our last night in San Francisco and go to a very nice restaurant.

Sandi-
Yes, you are right on in your choices. I"d suggest if you are planning a special evening out to dinner bringing something a little bit smarter than casual skirts and dresses. There are some really nice restaurants that you could enjoy wearing a cocktail type dress if you are wanting to feel extra special. Even a simple sheath dress that you can dress up with heels and accessories would be great.

I just perused your other threads. This dress would be a great dress for dinner out.... it looks like you could dress it either up or down.
http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....this-dress

Which town/area are you planning to stay?

What you describe mostly sounds good. I would definitely keep a few cardigans handy in rotation to layer and make up for temperature changes and accessorize with belts.

As I plan my spring/summer purchases, I want to buy things that I can take on a mid-summer trip to California wine country. I've heard it's kind of a smart casual "dress code" - and that I need to wear comfy walking shoes. I plan to bring layers because the evenings get fairly cool, but the days are very hot.

Is it appropriate to wear:

* somewhat casual summer dresses - sleeveless and sundresses?
*  dressier shorts?
*  casual skirts?
* Can I dress similarly for the restaurants in the evening?
* any other tips/recommendations on clothing & accessories?

This trip will be a celebration of a big birthday for my husband, and I want to look sharp. Thanks so much in advance for any advice you can give.
