Thanks rejoiceandbe those are good points. We are usually fair weather hikers and don’t plan any long excursions but I will definitely bring lots of good socks and I won’t skimp on shoes because if one pair gets soaked I’ll need a replacement!

How serious is your hiking going to be? If the hikes are going to be all-day, wilderness type excursions then light weight, packable, breathable, water-proof trousers and plenty of dry socks will add to the enjoyment of the event. A "soggy bottom" as a result of rain dripping off your waterproof wind breaker on to your lower half is rather miserable. And hard to dry out in a camper van. I speak from experience.

Lana, your preparation is going to make sure you get your wardrobe right and enjoy this fabulous holiday. I’m glad you are making practical choices, that is always my problem when I fail to plan my packing needs, I take too many dressy items because those are the pieces that I love.

Stag, you’re right, I don’t need to do without it completely, but am removing most of the white clothes. Still taking a hat with white in it, shoes with white details, scarf with a white background, graphic tee and my white bag. Pale grey will be there too so that will help with adding light without showing as much dirt. So instead of major white elements I’ll have it in details.

Thanks Janet, I’m still hoping to order a white jacket if it comes back in stock and am bringing a white graphic tee. I do have a couple of scarves on my packing list too. Things are coming together well.

Lana, I’m really glad that was helpful! I have been enjoying wearing white more in recent years, but I leave most white items at home for this kind of trip. I will take a white tee and a white denim jacket sometimes because those are easy to launder. I also take some easy casual (not delicate silk) patterned scarves that can add whatever colors you most enjoy wearing.

Thanks everyone for your input, I’m still pondering and have made lots of changes to my capsule based on your suggestions, including reducing the dressy elements and focusing on more sturdy casual comfortable clothes. I did a practice trip for a couple of days, and glad I did, because I had forgotten how dirty things can get when camping and traveling. I’ve gotten rid of all the white clothes in the capsule which was hard for me because it looks good with my coloring, but easy to keep clean is more important for this trip.

Janet, Your input has been especially helpful since you’ve been on similar trips, and I’ve taken your advice about not bringing anything too precious. I’ll post the final capsule once I finalize it.

It sounds like you’re really organized!

I may be an outlier here, but on hiking-intensive trips like I tend to take, I will take hiking boots AND lighter weight hiking shoes (mine are actually trail runners, so they do double duty if I decide to go for a little run). I find that changing shoes helps my feet recover better from long days on my feet. So my total of useful shoes on my last trip was:

-hiking boots
-hiking/running shoes
-fashion sneakers
-black combat boots
-Tevas/sturdy flip-flops

On our Airstream trip, we actually took along our muck boots from the ranch, and they were really useful for super rainy days, of which we had a few. Even in campsites and areas with high grass they come in handy (better for keeping ticks away too). They’re bulky (especially hubs’ big size 14s!) but we found a dedicated spot for them.

I like the advice of a skirt instead of a dress. I did take a Ripskirt with me on the Airstream trip but never had occasion to wear it.

I agree, hiking pants are hard. Most are at best a compromise in style. My absolute favorite pair are from Athleta years ago. They’re full length, wide-legged, and lightweight. I can layer long underwear beneath when it’s cold, but they’re light enough to be wearable even in warm weather. The fabric is like what they now make the Brooklyn pants with. Their newer hiking pants are more substantial and more stretchy, but also a bit rough to the touch, and they’re more fitted. I have a pair and I like them, but not on warmer days. I like full-length hiking pants for the sun protection as well as protection from critters and bites, and even abrasions when scrambling, so truly lightweight pants are a holy grail. I like them in black or navy so they don’t look so gearish when I wear them into town.

These look great, but all but the tank top, swimsuits, and dresses look like late fall/winter things to me!
For me- skorts and Birks are hiking essentials!

Approprio, lots of good advice in your comment. When I backpacked Europe a few years ago, I went by the 3 shoe rule too but I was very minimal for that trip. My feet were very tired from all the walking. I lugged around a leather jacket and never wore it, so I think you’re right about getting rid of it for this trip. Everything really does need to do double duty in the van, and ideally every topper would go with every bottom. Isn’t it funny how we reach for something like your long sleeved shirt on a trip, and many times I don’t know till I’m on the trip what these things are!

Some changes I’ve made so far are eliminating one dress and the leather jacket, reduced to one bag plus my wallet is a large wristlet.I added a utility jacket and insect repellant pants and long sleeve top.

I like to travel as light as possible on these kinds of trips. I am always looking for things that can do double duty.

Layering is key. I vote lose the leather jacket and look for stylish shells, mid layers and fleeces. Sounds like an oxymoron, but they do exist! I like the suggestion for lightweight toppers upthread.

I prefer skirts over dresses when traveling, they are more versatile. If you want to take a dress, make it one you can layer with other pieces.

I agree with Janet about a long sleeved shirt for hiking. On our Japanese tour, a Paul Smith women’s dress shirt doubled as my hiking shirt. It worked very hard on that trip! Hiking pants are great, but I’ve rarely found a pair I really like. The best ones ever had elastic waist and a drawstring to “ruche” them up. A sun hat is essential.

I usually travel with only two pairs of shoes, but I think the optimum number of pairs are three. Hikers, sandals and something dressy.

I’ve nixed the hiking boots in favor of lightweight hiking shoes that will go anywhere. I am living in Scarpa Mojitos at the moment. They are marketed as lifestyle shoes but in my opinion they are trail worthy. I find them perfect for strenuous day hikes, and also around town. See finds below.

Do you have one of those sun protective shirts? Something like this: https://www.rei.com/product/20.....irt-womens

I forgot to include that in my list, but I definitely wear these out hiking when I need sun protection on back of neck and arms. They’re pretty breathable so not usually too hot. I actually keep one (and a hat) in the trunk of my car for impromptu photo sessions.

I have two overhead cabinets for clothes so feel like everything needs to earn it’s place. The color is unusual, and I would like to bring something special like this, but I’m afraid I won’t wear it.

I’m so glad you mentioned insects! I have some hiking pants and a shirt with insect repellent built it - I need to take those. I completely forgot about the ridiculously huge mosquitoes we had when I lived in North Dakota. We have ticks here in North Carolina, so I prefer to hike in long pants with knee high socks.

Traveling across the North in summer? Leg coverage also helps with insect coverage. Warning, Ticks! No See-ums! Bring insect repellant and cover your neck with a scarf.

Why are you uncertain about the leather jacket? Is it the color, the weight of the leather, the style?

Thanks Suz! Janet just posted a pair of shorts in the Part One thread that I might consider because of wider legs. XCVI used to make some pants that had drawstrings on the sides and similar to what JAileen posted, so I’m going to see if they still have something like that. They could be full length or ruched up quite a bit shorter.

I’ve got some revisions to do — this capsule is too city heavy and I can exchange some dressier items for more casual ones I could dress up a bit. I think one dress is leaving as well as the leather jacket and I’ll add some versatile comfy knits.

I hear you on wanting leg coverage for flattery (and also sun). A pair of capri types like JAileen is showing could work, though, maybe?

I used to have convertible (zip off) hiking pants, but didn’t like them. They were a pain to convert one way or the other, and looked kind of funky because of the zipper.

I recently bought these pants which have tabs to hold the legs up. I haven’t worn them yet, but may take them on our upcoming birding trip. Las Vegas will be hot, but we’ll also be in Tonopah which is at 6000 feet in elevation, and could be chilly.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08M.....#038;psc=1

Rachylou, Oops I forgot to add the sun hat to my item pics! I just ordered this one so hope it has enough shade. If not I’ll keep looking.

I agree something lighter like linen as a topper for the a/c would be good. I burn up then freeze. Will think that one over. Decisions, decisions. I am bringing house shoes/camp shoes that are slip on but didn’t add them because they are utilitarian.

JAileen, good question, I don’t wear shorts, so when it’s super hot I’ll wear dresses, otherwise long or ankle length are my choice for pants even when it’s warm. I might need to consider a lighter color hiking pant though for the heat. I’m using Pages on my iPad to build the capsule and I was lucky because most everything was in Stylebook already.

Suz, thank you, maybe I could try one of those convertible hiking pants, That would give me an opportunity to try some longer shorts. I really don’t like showing my legs above my knees though.
